But do they have Fullers Walnut cake?

My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Used to be occasionally taken to Lyons in Streatham in the sixties ..... erm, possibly fifties ......

Probably Fifties..Sue :) There were 2 in Rye Lane. One oposite Primarks one on the right

just before the station (coming from Dulwich)

I was always fasinated by the little heated cubicals with bowls of chips and other food in that were filled

from one side and collected the other side.

And the 'Nippys' were always nice to me when I about 5-6 . Such a sweet child I was. lol.

Foxy.

The Rose is an Enterprise Inns pub. Not sure how the people at the Rye will be running it if that is a Capital pub.

However, due to changes in legislation regarding tied pubs, Enterprise are selling some of their pubs and taking back others and managing them themselves or by proxies. The Signal in Forest Hill, formerly the Hob, an Enterprise pub, is now managed by Hippo Inns.

Brilliant. That would really turn the pub around :)

I would have thought the new owners/tenants would want the pub open for Christmas, New Year, as this is probably the busiest and most profitable time of the year. Eight Weeks, they must be doing a fairly big refurbishment.

Pity, I was hoping it would be open for Christmas, as it is the nearest pub to home.

Sidhue, I agree with you completely with regards to the audio message regarding the "Forest Hill Tavern"

Why anyone who is running a business and getting free advertising from TFL for the pub should change the name does seem to be rather unwise.

The only TFL audio that needs to change is FREE Ern road not FRY Ern.

On the P13 the announcement for Underhill/Belvoir Road is always "Bell-voir" Road not "Beaver" Road (which is how I was taught Belvoir is pronounced - at least that's how you say the place/stately home in Leicestershire).

Seems like a missed opportunity to me.

    • Home  Area  Dulwich Londis divides opinion in leafy Dulwich The site was previously home to Big Belly’s  by Ruby Gregory - Local Democracy Reporter    18th August 2025   Melbourne Grove from Google Street view       Plans to open a new Londis until 1am every day of the week have divided residents living in Dulwich. Plans have been submitted to turn two empty units located at 4 Melbourne Grove, East Dulwich into a Londis which would open from 6am until 1am from Monday through to Sunday.   The site was previously home to Big Belly’s, a fast food takeaway shop and a physiotherapy clinic. The site was previously home to a fast food takeaway shop and a physiotherapy clinic Credit: Google Street View Southwark Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee will decide on the plans at a meeting next Tuesday (August 19). Under the original plans, alcohol would also be sold from 6am to 1am every day of the week however, the Metropolitan Police raised concerns over the impact this could have on the surrounding residential area.   The applicant and the Met Police have since agreed that the proposed off-sales of alcohol end one hour earlier each day at 12am. Trading Standards have requested a number of conditions be added to the licence should it be approved, including implementing a Challenge 25 scheme and that any refusals be recorded to show the policy is being used effectively.   61 objections but 24 in support But the plans have divided the local community, as 61 residents and local groups have objected to the application while 24 people are in support. Additionally a petition on change.org demanding the plans be rejected has received 128 signatures as of August 14. The Friends of Charter School East Dulwich said: “The open display of alcoholic drinks so close to the school, in a shop which will unfortunately draw in the pupils for the hot snacks, crisps and sugary sweets on sale, will provide immediate access to alcoholic drinks and encourage the pupils to consume alcohol. We are also concerned about potential access to cigarettes and vapes.” However those in support of the plans said while they understood concerns had been raised over the closeness of the Charter School, they didn’t think it should be “a valid reason for refusal”. They said: “Schoolchildren pass by briefly at around 3pm, not during the late hours when alcohol is sold and there are already other off-licences within a minute’s walk which they use without any problems. There has never been an issue there, and I see no reason why this store would be treated differently.” Another person added: “It seems like common sense that a convenience store like Londis should be allowed to open and sell alcohol like any other shop on Melbourne Grove, Grove Vale and Dog Kennel Hill. This isn’t a bar, it’s not a pub, and it’s definitely not a nightclub — people don’t drink inside, they take things home. “There are no outside tables or seating, so there won’t be any noise or people hanging around. It’s a quick-in, quick-out kind of place — the same way Tesco or Sainsbury’s Local works.” They went on to say: “Everyone I’ve spoken to in the area — including parents, renters, elderly neighbours — wants the shop to open. Most people don’t have time to write official comments, but they’re all saying the same thing: it’s about time something useful opened in that unit. “A shop brings more benefit to the local economy than yet another empty café or estate agent. It creates jobs, offers affordable essentials, and gives people an option after work or school.” The plans will ultimately be decided upon at a licensing meeting next week.
