Cassius
Has anyone been to the German Christmas Markets and if so would they recommend? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8163-german-christmas-markets/ Share on other sites
bigbadwolf
German christmas markets are gangsta. The sausages are awesome as well. I don't believe in Santa Claus though.I'm also part Kraut on my mums side. Bookworm
we haven't been to a German one but we went to one in Brussels. It was really easy to get there on the Eurostar and so close to the station that we walked back to it on the way home, rather than taking the underground. We stayed in a Novotel right next to the market and it had a swimming pool for the kids. The market itself was really good with a skating rink and a big wheel (not unlike the one in Hyde Park). There was much more variety than the London one and plenty of gluwein and interesting food stalls. We went on a Friday, which was much less busy than the Saturday, which was heaving. SteveT
Went to one a year ago in Hyde Park err it may be Green Park, it wasn't worth looking for the parking place. Horsebox
We were supposed to check out the German Christmas Market last December. Because of some interpreted directions and a malfunctioning SatNav, things took a turn for the wurst and we ended up at the sausage market instead. brum
If Beckenham doesn't appeal, Birmingham hosts one every year - why go all the way to Germany when you can buy your sausage and at the same time enjoy a splash-about with the floozie in the jacussi? Applespider
Depends what you're looking for. I've been over a few times to visit friends and stopped in at a few of the markets. I've rarely bought much though aside from gl?wein and the odd bit of confectionary. In terms of interesting gifts, I've found more at local open studios (e.g. Cockpit at Deptford/Holborn) It's a good excuse for a weekend break - but I'd recommend going to one in a city where there's more to do than just being known for the Christmas market. indiepanda
I went to one in Dusseldorf a couple of years ago, to be honest I was a bit underwhelmed. There were a lot of stalls, but if you knocked out the food ones and the Christmas decorations, there wasn't a whole lot left, and Dusseldorf wasn't the most charming of places either.
