Perhaps if you read what Wolf Olins say about it it might make it clearer:

The emblem is 2012, an instantly recognizable symbol and a universal form, one already closely associated with the Games in London and marking a moment of change for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Neither an appendage to London nor the Olympic symbol, it brings the two together in an inclusive way. It is a brand which can be read and understood by people of all ages, around the world.


Echoing London?s qualities of a modern, diverse and vibrant city, the London 2012 emblem is unconventionally bold, deliberately spirited and unexpectedly dissonant. Comprising neither sporting images nor pictures of London landmarks the emblem is designed to signify that while the Games is hosted in London, it is not just for London, but also for the UK and for the world. That it is as much for the athletes as for everyone, regardless of age, culture and language. It is a brand to help take the Olympic and Paralympic Games into a new era.

At the time, Barcelona's logo was stylistically fresh ...'hand painted' imagery as opposed to the traditional crisp, corporate look of the '80s. It was then ripped off mercilessly by huge corporations trying to look more 'friendly' and later by the Sydney Olympics.


Anyway, lots of good points in this thread.

Client: 2012 Olympics

Deadline: ASAP

Brief: We the committee, T. Jowell, S. Coe et al, would like a design which is quite new wave/rave. We're right into jaunty angles, strobing colours and faux graffiti. If you could work something into the logo which looks like Lisa Simpson doing a sex act that would be a nice to have. Tessa's son really likes fluro colours so some of those please.

Budget: ?1000 rising to ?400,000 if needs be (to buy new pens n that).

Just heard on the radio that people are having epileptic seizures when watching the promotional video or the moving logo. Didn't quite believe it till they had phone calls from people this had happened to and it apparently has also failed a test that to ascertain if it will trigger epileptic attacks.


Has anyone seen the alternative logos that are on the BBC site?

Not that much quality but interesting to see what people think are important elements when putting the logo together. I personally don't think there should be any references to London landmarks, if anything it should feature the new Olympic park being built, if that's possible.

      Is  the  decision by the High Court not to  deport an Eritrean man  to France on Wednesday anything other than a massive boost for Farage and reform. Farage has made a commitment for the UK to exit the ECHR which limits the independence of our justice system The UK Government’s “one in, one out” has failed at the first hurdle - just as the Rwanda scheme did under the Tories. To make it even more embarrassing is that the accommodation for deportees   in Rwanda paid for by the UK is now being used by the USA for its deportees. If we are to have Farage thrust upon us as a result of such judicial decisions, then God help us.

      I recently hired Andy to paint the newly plastered walls in my front room, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. From the start, he offered a fair and reasonable price for the work, and his professionalism really stood out. Andy has a wealth of experience and was happy to share suggestions about colour choices and paint types, which made the decision-making process much easier.       John recently skimmed the walls in our front room lounge, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the result. From start to finish, he was professional, punctual, and easy to work with.   He arrived on time each day and kept me updated on progress, which made the whole process smooth and stress-free. The quality of his plastering is smooth, even, and ready to paint with minimal prep. He takes real pride in his work.   John was also very tidy, laying down protective sheets and cleaning up thoroughly after the job was done. It’s clear he respects his clients’ homes, which I really appreciated.   On top of that, he’s friendly, approachable, and trustworthy someone you feel comfortable having in your home.
