If you are not a cyclist would you want one of these parked right outside your front door.

Will they be sited away from residential front doors?

I would not like one right outside my house.

----

In answer to your question (1) yes I'm a cyclist (2) no I certainly wouldn't want to look out of my window onto that.

----

Except the having it in front of your house doesn't guarantee you access to it. Personally, I wouldn't want one directly in front of my house. I'm glad there are people who do though as hopefully the council will take individual preference into consideration when selecting the precise location.

----

Just a handful of the examples of NIMBYism on this thread.

I never asked those questions by the way, that was someone else.

I don't think the hangers should be located in front of front doors but at junctions away from front doors. If other people want them in front of their front doors then great for them. I'm glad siting them is done via consultation so that people can get what they want / makes sense for them.

If that is NIMBYism to you so be it, you clearly are just spoiling for a fight

"Yes, DF, that is why I asked DaveR if he thought those/any family who requested a hangar on their street should also give up their car, if they have one. He did not answer."

Just to be clear, I didn't answer because it's a very stupid question.

Consultation not according to this

We're trying to get them placed outside people who have requested them.

Lambeth now has over 150 of these installed. Southwark is aiming for another 89 to add to 11. With the right scale this could become a strategic transport project and that is the angle I've taken with council officials.

With regard to attractiveness. Lambeth in some cases have bookened them with street streets in the road. Seems a great way of doing it.

@ keano77 they're basically just bolted down - and if nobody's using it, I'd imagine the council will move it to somewhere that it will get used. So that they can charge people to use it. No point in having them on the street if they're not used.

Most streets do not have a front door at the junction. Most streets have two junctions. Its entirely possible to do this for virtually every road that requests it without running out of space.

Yes, fair enough wulfhound, that would make sense.

However, I can't help feeling the hangars look like pig pens

Literally spend 30 seconds on Google Street View and you'll find that all of these streets have stretches which are not directly overlooked by houses. For example:

Shawbury Rd:

Sylvester Road:

Melbourne Grove:

But really, one could equally complain about having to overlook cars/ vans etc. The only difference is that we're used to the latter and these hangers are new.

These all look like great positions for bike Hangars.

Almost every street has similar spots, which aren't directly overlooked, that's the point. take almost any street and a quick Streetview will uncover a bits which aren't located directly outside someone's front door.

Will Southwark be subjecting all these bikehangers to local consultation or will they just plonk them down and thats it?

Exactly, that was my point. I don't think this is a big deal. They have been and can be located in this way. If some people specifically prefer to have them directly in front of their house as they think that's better, then hopefully that could also be arranged at the time of request.

I like the planters in the picture some else attached. It definitely softens the look of them.

The hangars come what may are a great new addition.

    • To be honest, pal, it's not good being a fan of a local business and then not go there. One on hand, the barber shop literally next door to Romeo Jones started serving coffee. The Crown and Greyhound and Rocca serve coffee. Redemption Coffee opened up not far away, and then also Megan's next door to that. DVillage was serving coffee (but wasn't very popular), as was Au Ciel (which is). Maybe also Heritage Cheese, I don't know. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam doing coffee and sandwiches at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the other direction. The whole of Dulwich Village serves coffee. And yet on the other hand, there are enough punters to support all good coffee shops. With the exception of Rocca and Megan's (which are both big spaces) and C&G (which does coffee like everything else - slow and with bad service), all these places regularly get queues out the door. Gail's often has big queues and yet very few people crossed the street to Romeo Jones (which was much better)... Half the staff at Gail's are perfectly fine and efficient. The other half are pretty offhand and rude. It's certainly not welcoming or friendly service. But they're certainly hard working, and no doubt raking the money in for Luke Johnson...
    • Well according to a newspaper article, Gail’s is opening 10 shops in London,,, yup Dulwich is named 10/5 I seem to recall with others in London opening at 7 am…!, Guess that is to capture workers coming off all night shift. Offering free mince pies until they run out.. So very sad to hear about Romeo Jones… been a customer since the opening, any idea where Patrick has gone or details… please pm me.    What is going to be in its place…. Will be around in Jan…umm village is changing….
    • interesting the police said "the car was in demand at the moment" what make/model is that?
    • Just be careful to know exactly what they cover and the limits. i use Many Pets and Medivet, as I think one of the vets is exceptionally good. Some of the NHV are, but I’ve had a couple I’ve not liked at all.  I need consistency and to feel that they actually care more about the animals than the money.
