I blame the Roman bl0w in's back in Colchester in 50BC

Pretentious people with names like Titus and Augustus, going around up to their knees in sea water, planting flavourless bivalves

Damn them

Some people say the same about Harvester restaurants... Of course, one of the things about food and taste buds and personal opinion is that it's all subjective, there is no right or wrong - hey, a lot of people love durian and natto, despite me thinking those are two of the evilest flavours on the planet. Are they wrong? Am I? Neither.

Cos it's all subjective.

You don't like oysters. Nor do I. But there's a lot of folk who do, and they don't eat them just for the thrill of spending money. Go ask Richard Corrigan, a man who grew up dirt poor and now owns Bentleys, why he loved them even when he lived in poverty in rural Ireland. Can't have been the cost...

Snobbery goes both ways. Food should be above that.

When I was a kid in the 50's, when people went to the butchers and asked for bones for their dog,

They were given a bag of lamb shanks FREE. Even though the war was just over and rationing had just ended

people would not eat lamb shanks.. Now they are a luxury and cost a relative fortune.. especially in restaurants.

Oysters are the same.. Cockles and Mussels likewise.

How is it rubbish..? it is fact.. not disputable.. nothing to argue about..

Were you around in the 50's. Have you bought lamb shank recently .. ? Ridiculous price..

Let the pretentious have their fill.....

You can buy lamb shanks really cheaply in places like Iceland. They're something like a fiver for two big ones.

And Indian restaurants quite often have lamb shank on their menu, which is not particularly expensive compared to the other stuff.

And you can buy cooked mussels in Sainsbury's for ?2 for 200g which are excellent for fish soup.

I had forgotten you could cook oysters, maybe I need to try them cooked and I might change my mind :)

You could do the Nigella Lawson method and use a good quality Oyster Sauce in a steak pie or stew instead of the wee beasties themselves - like anchovy essence in some meat dishes (Victorians and ancient Romans loved it) it really adds something.

Ok ok, I just figured out the oyster place.

Bentley's it isn't, but I did speak to the new guy at the Deli near Biff. As it turns out, he had a fish shop in Chelsea opposite Bibendum

He's sold that and has the deli, he's called Manuel and will add a fish section at the back

Oysters will feature, but not pinks or seafood sticks or yellow haddock, or boil in the bag kippers

And JoeLeg try telling this lot food is above snobbery. They're like a rat up a drainpipe when it comes to thumping the fox and I back into our circus tent when we feel the need to express an opinion about food. YES snobbery works both AND equally SOME people but, eat and share their experiences about CERTAIN food types not because they genuinely enjoy them, but more because they enjoy being gratified at the thought of the amount of lolly they've spent on said food.

So presumptuous. Why do you think you know what people actually think, feel or like?

I like Oysters, you don't. Who actually cares.

Ohhh, did that touch a nerve. That's my point really, I'm not for digging anyone out, though I'm happy to whack the mole when it rears its blinded head

Live and let live I say, but that seems to upset those who want to spit out a load of old clap trap prejudice about oysters/class and the likes

Again you and that mange ridden sidekick take great pleasure in your guff, riding around the thread on the same old "we clever, you stupid" scooter

What you fail to acquire is the knowledge of that particular 'food staple' which covers the globe and thousands of years. Yet you and him act as if you've uncovered the greatest conspiracy on earth.

All the while and right under your noses you've been sold short by you and yours. Those lovely fish food traders that sell pinks, crab sticks, and the rest are the real con

Yellow haddock is dyed and not actually smoked (the real stuff is near white btw). And good kippers don't come in a bag, with a knob of butter, that's just the crap you've been fobbed off with for years

Really, it's quite tragic that in this day and age of the Internet at your fingertips, you and yours can't get to grips with these things

But for comedy value, you both are up there with UFO abductees and Chem trailers

And you walk among us

Heaven help

Even after it has been clearly demonstrated that oysters aren't necessarily expensive, the nonsense continues. If you can afford a couple of pints or a pack of fags now and again, you can afford oysters.

Seabag - thanks for your small injection of fact, amongst all the made up nonsense.

One minute we get the above... Then... Your own prejudices rear their ugly head with this little cracker:

So you see, in reality, you don't "live and let live" do you?, you take great pleasure in denouncing any opinion which isn't in line with your own, and then to top it off you get personal about the specific food someone wants to eat. Consistency Seabag, that's all I ask for!

Didn't say I was clever and you or anyone else was stupid, don't think fox did either? I've read through it all twice now and nope still don't get that vibe. Think it's you disagreeing with us and then playing the same old card of fox and Louisa are talking rubbish again yada yada yawn.

Think you think this all through with way too much complex analysis. I've tried Oysters, they taste like crap, and seem pointless. Simple as that really. I don't care how many thousands of millions of years they've been on the earth tbh.

Why are fishmongers a con? They sell something I like, I buy it because I like the taste. They sell something you like, you buy it because of the price. Simple as that really.

Oh I've got to grips with it all. I've been on the earth long enough to get to grips with a lot of things, it's just sad that I can't have an opinion without being shouted down and made to look stupid for that opinion. That's all.

    • https://www.assistancedogs.org.uk/information-hub/assistance-dogs-emotional-support-dogs-and-therapy-dogs/   hello   i’d be interested to understand if anyone.has experience of Assistance Dogs especially for autistic children of different ages for emotional support and therapy   There was a prior thread on this topic on EDF 10 hrs ago but it had limited experiences and there was a (claimed) change in UK legislation in 2019. Whilst the industry appears unregulated/unlicensed, there are several providers (approx 15, perhaps more) who claim to have fully trained dogs or say that they can help families to train a puppy/young dog over the 18-24 months.  The latter obviously comes with a need for strong commitment to the challenge. Costs for a fully trained assistance dog are quoted at £13-15k albeit they claim £23k total cost to train the dog. On the one hand, this could potentially be a useful solution for some families if such a dog was truly trained as their websites claim and such a dog was accepted in public places and schools etc… On the other hand, I don’t think that I’ve ever seen an assistance dog of this type or in this context (only for a blind or partially sighted person) and hence a real risk of fraud or exploitation! The SEN challenge for families coupled with limited resources in schools or from local authorities or the NHS as well as the extremely challenging experience of many families with schools offering little or no support or making the situation worse leaves a big risk of lots of different types of fraud and or exploitation in this area.
    • Hi there  We live on Woodwarde Road backing on to Alleyns Top Field.  Our cat Gigi has gone missing — it’s been about 24 hours now. She is a cream Bengal. Could you please check sheds, garages, or anywhere she might have got stuck please? And if you could keep an eye out or share on any local groups/forums, we’d really appreciate it. Photo attached.   Thanks so much! My name is Jeff on 07956 910068.
