Hal - did not the IMF say Britian would take much longer to come out of recession than it has? They just don't want to admit when they are wrong so they throw in a double dip warning.

"Hedgers" I call them - (and there is no bigger insult than that)...

The warning was published on 18th January.

Anyway, 0.1% is small enough to be accounted for by rounding errors. It's small enough to be reversed when the revised figures are published in due course.

The fact that we are in an election year with a former Chancellor serving as PM is enough to raise my suspicions about the accuracy of that figure. I'm still hedging my bets.

I like Dara O'Briain point about how his Irish friends recently told him they've decided to embrace the recession. He said the British people embraced it before it even arrived are thus of a better mindset to pull themselves out of it.

Of course it helps if you have a government that isn't in denial over what's happening, on that score the Irish are several steps ahead of us.

and all down to 'quantative easement'

it sounds as if there has been a large portion of syrup of figs spread across the land to all the gullible believers of the chancellor.

Tipping large quantities of banknotes into the economy does not mean the recession has gone away,

it means the government is hiding behind a few bushells of it in order to get re-elected.

No doubt we shall rush off and vote the ne'erdowells back in very shortly, like leamings before the leap.

    • Is Dell Autos closing down completely or just moving? For whatever it's worth, for MOTs I've had good recent experience with The Test Centre in Deptford. They only do MOTs so they don't have any particular incentive to fail you and they usually have same day appointments. Open 7 days a week and late. https://www.thetestcentre.co.uk/our-test-centres/deptford-branch/ Obviously you would still need a "normal" garage to do servicing and repairs etc.
    • So what is the issue? You want compensation for the loss of value, or you want to expedite the matter?
    • No. What happened? I actually thought, considering it was what we used to call Guy Fawkes Day last night, the loud noises from  fireworks ended remarkably early. About 9pm? Maybe I just fell asleep and didn't hear any later ones. Do people actually burn Guys any more? Apart from at places like Lewes, where I believe they still have Bonfire Societies and burn effigies of various political figures etc.
    • The accompaniment to our "Christmas Pudding" aka Nothing-Whatever-Like-A- Christmas-Pudding last year  at The Cherry Tree was "brandy butter ice-cream." If it had ever been near any brandy, the brandy must have been waved in its direction from a very great distance. Same with butter. The ice cream tasted like bog standard "vanilla" from a catering tub. At least it did bear some resemblance to ice cream. Whereas the "Christmas Pudding" bore no resemblance whatever to any Christmas Pudding I have ever seen or tasted in my many  decades of seeing and tasting Christmas Puddings. Oh, and Cinzano Bianco. Bleurgh. My sister used to drink that. 🤢
