*Bob*
Oh, I hope so. I'm delighted (for Apple) that they've managed to persuade hundreds of millions of people that iPhones and iPods are 'the thing to have' but for me, computers have only ever been purchased on the basis on what I need them for, how well they work and value for money. stevebailey
I hate to say it, but the iPad is not going to replace a PC to most extents.Sure if you want it purely to browse the web, or send emails, then go for it I say.If you want to use it for video and music, you have to synch it through a PC/MAC anyway. If you want it for creating documents, the best you'll get are 3rd party text editors. As has been said, its an intermediary device for playing around on the web or viewing movies on the commute, thats about it. *Bob*
stevebailey Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> I hate to say it, but the iPad is not going to> replace a PC to most extents.Surely.. but then it isn't meant to; no more than an iPod can replace the necessity for iTunes and a computer to sync to. For me, the killer iPad 'deciders' will centre on whether its limited multitasking abilities will be a problem, and the nagging suspicion that iPad Mk II will feature a more regular Mac OS rather than one based on the iPhone. *Bob*
Actually I do take an occasional train.. and did indeed get on the morning train to London Bridge a couple of days ago. It was full of freaks emailing on their iPhones and Blackberries, because there were clearly important emails which needed urgent attention in-between the emails they sent at home on their laptops before they set-off and the emails they'd be sending as soon as they arrived at work. MrBen
And there it is, for I am that freak. It occasionally saves me 30 mins on the day I'd otherwise spend listening to commuter snoring, talking about their house purchase falling through or watching someone read the Metro. Well that was my excuse when I bumped into Moos the other day complaining of thumb cramp....And a contract Blackberry is a twenty quid emailing machine no? I guess I just don't have the same usage profile as that which Apple are aiming this at. On planes I'll read or watch a film on the in built E/S. Trains - as above unless its to Edinburgh where East Coast let me plug my Macbook in. So *Bob* just curious as to where / when you'd use it? *Bob*
I have explained all this, Ben. BEN.. pay attention. I already have a Mac Pro, powered by eight huge hairy testicles which does everything I need: vomits-out my irritating musical creations plus any other work-related blah, puts the kettle on, sucks me off - the lot. I have nine year-old iBook which is dead. No iPhones or other such nonsense.Other factors include: girlfriend (also home-based), house, stairs, garden. Essentially we require something else to browse the web and send emails on. Whilst sitting in the garden. Whilst sitting in the kitchen. Whilst watching telly. Whilst curling one down. When the Hairy Mac is in use. Everywhere except in the same place as the one I have to spend several hours per day looking at. Consider the iPad in relation to the alternatives. Netbook - slightly cheaper, doesn't work very well. Mac Laptop - twice the price, don't need the featuresiPhone-type thing - pocket-sapping contract, fiddly to use, can't share it with TheMissusPC laptop - same price, doesn't work as well, don't need the featuresWhat would you do? Brendan
If you added up the money you would have earned per/hour working instead of trying to convince yourself to get one of these things by seeking vindication from people whose only qualification for opinion is that we have at some stage googled ?East Dulwich? does it equal the price of one? An ipad that is. It sounds like a high tech sanitary towel. MrBen
Aha. My apologies. I get it now. As a cost efficient add on to whatever laptop you already have for web browsing in the garden, kitchen etc. And I guess I don't do that. When I'm in the garden I like to do anything but look at the screen thats fried my brain for 5 days. And Apple screens reflect horribly in day light. The kitchen though , yes, as getting sick of the gfs greasy paws on my macbook as she makes another dish off the BBC Good Food website. Give me time...I'll come round to it in the end. *Bob*
I've quite enjoyed not having a laptop for the last couple of months, to be honest. It certainly puts the need/want equation into perspective. The conclusion seems to be we need something, just not something that does very much. Moos
My flashy CEO has one and, er.. he likes it. I don't know why he's bothered, as he also has the supremely beautiful slender Apple laptop which can't weigh much more and has good horsepower.
