BigOne
Hi all ...Was wondering if any of you knew of some website that provide plenty of old fashioned photos of Dulwich and surrounding areas ? I've tried Peckham online Library and the Emeus - but little joy ?Thanks in advance. val
Chener books have various books by John Beasley, there is one called East Dulwich An illustrated Alphabetical Guild Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/9776-vintage-photos-of-east-dulwich/#findComment-291401 Share on other sites
EDOldie
Getty Images have some interesting Dulwich photos online including Keith Richards & Anita Pallenberg outside Kings College (described as in Dulwich so I suppose it might have been Dulwich Hospital) with baby Marlon. Jah Lush
Keith & Anita's son Marlon was born in Kings. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/9776-vintage-photos-of-east-dulwich/#findComment-291486 Share on other sites
EDOldie
Yes, I'm sure you (of all prople) wouldn't make a mistake about that. But it's decribed in the photo as being in Dulwich. So I'm sure the caption is wrong. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/9776-vintage-photos-of-east-dulwich/#findComment-291492 Share on other sites
Jah Lush
I knew already but I just looked it up anyway. It's definitely outside Kings. Two photos, Says Kings College Hospital London. PeckhamRose
I second the John Beasley suggestion. His books are brilliant. Southwark Local Library also is a great source of information and photos - it's currently at the 2nd floor of the Peckham Library. SimonM
Only seen 1 of these pics. Dulwich Hospital was named "King's College Hospital - East Dulwich annexe" for a period to the mid-70s, and did still have a maternity ward then: it was also thought a good nicer than the one at King's by a mother of my acquaintance... computedshorty
The buildings at the cross roads at Lordship Lane, Barry Road, and Eynella Road, have changed so much in the last century,The attached picture is the old buildings opposite the St Thomas Moore R.C Church Lordship Lane , in the background can be seen the Christ Church Barry Road . In those days there were shops in the same place, as today. Today the site 397, 399, 401 Lordship Lane SE22, comprises of Costcutter , D.V.R. , Badger Bakery. The ( Passmore Edwards ) Dulwich Library, was damaged in the second world war, there were for the duration two brick flat roofed Air Raid Shelters built in the grounds, one in the corner of the gardens further away from the main building at a gate in Eyenella Road, the other facing Lordship Lane , the latter one was converted into public toilets, they have been removed now.The Lordship Lane R.C Church was damaged several times as many bombs dropped nearby, the Vicarage behind was quite damaged. The Post Office during the war was in the row of shops in Woodwarde Road next to the Alley way that went through to Lordship Lane.
