Aha, Dulwich Mumski! Just as well there isn't a Rose of Volgograd competition: I'm sure you'd walk it :)

Actually, I was thinking of a Dulwich entrant for the male escort section. I'm not sure if it would be fair to the other female contestants to allow any of the gorgeous women of Dulwich to enter the Rose competition itself.

dont know if it still happens now but there used to be regional heats held in the swan in stockwell,it was actually a fairly good nights craic. on another note dm when i was a young buck roaming the leafy lanes of armagh i was deemed suitably handsome enough to be an escort on several occasions in both county and provincial heats of the rose actually did it 3 times. anyone ever hear of the term "a spare prick at a wedding" well that sums up escort duty in one phrase.

Oh Spadetownboy,

I bet you are a looker! My sister was escorted by this chap who later went on to be a priest - I think she still writes to him. She wore a cerise pink "ra-ra" dress and had a great big spiral perm. I was so proud of my big sister, I remember my mother weeping with pride!

Well, there isn't quite a Rose of Volgograd competition but the annual Miss Nuclear Russia is quite a hoot. If you're Russian and work in the nuclear power/nuclear weapons industry, this is the beauty competition for you. This year's winners can be found here and I'm sure with her impeccable Russian parentage, Dulwich Mum would beat the lot of them hands down.

Do you think they glow in the dark?

    • A new roadmap (surely railmap?!) for rail accessibility has been published: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/accessible-railways-roadmap It says "approximately 56% of stations and around 66% of the 1.3 billion journeys that take place on the network have step-free access to platforms...  "£373 million has been committed over the next 5 years to deliver Access for All projects, providing step-free access from station entrances to and between platforms, alongside other essential accessibility upgrades. These works, together, will increase the number of step-free stations across Great Britain from 56% to 58%. "This improvement will make travel easier with step-free access available at stations covering an increased share of total rail journeys – from 66% up to 71%" Don't know what that means for us here: upgrading Peckham Rye would cover a lot of rail journeys but the cost has no doubt increased from the £40m figure previously quoted. So that would eat into a lot of the funding.
