Loud music / singing

Recommended Posts

The house where the party was last night is about 10m from us as the crow flies. They have a party like that once a year tops. I wasn't wild about the PA and singalong either (living right on top of it) but I reckon every neighbour gets a pass every now and then (and I hope my neighbours think like that about me). So no complaints here.

It's been constant building works around our way. Surely they shouldn't be allowed to make so much noise on weekends. We've even had to close windows/skylights to block out noise. Owners of all the properties concerned moved out for duration so no one to complain to. When we had building works last year, we asked for no weekend work and warned neighbours of working hours and delivery days so they wouldn't be too effected. Shame they couldn't show same consideration.

It's a tough one. We had to have massive building work done a couple of years ago to underpin our house - including moving out for 9 months. Must have been horrendous for our neighbours but they were universally great about it. I think it helped we used a small building company who were good about working to agreed hours and everyone knew we weren't exactly doing it out of choice, but still. We did feel like we needed to drop quite a few bottles of wine round when we moved back in!

When there was rebuilding at the back of us, the council stated they could only make a noise (Drilling/ excessive hammering) between 8 and 9 weekdays, for about 4 hours on a Saturday (I think it was 10 - 2) and nothing on Sunday.

This was many years go, and when the neighbours complained to the council (Planning) that these times were not kept, the enforcement officers came up to inspect etc.

Our neighbours have been constructing a side-extension since Jan/Feb. The builders worked across all the bank holidays including Easter(!), and well into the evenings including Saturdays and are STILL GOING.

In the early days, we gave them the benefit of the doubt and understood they were working to a timeframe, but it seems endless.

We have spoken to the contractors and the Council and have the noise team number on speed dial for call-outs outside of working hours. Now it's summer it's even more frustrating to be at home Monday-Saturday with no windows open. Even with them closed- there is no single room in the house to escape the noise.

Guera, if I were you, having already spoken to them with regard to the nuisance, I'd be keeping a diary of when they start and stop, and calling that number as soon as they exceed the permitted working hours. What do the noise team say each time?

Thanks @TheMinkey

Yes we did start with the diary but it became almost a full-time job updating it. To be honest, roughly 4 months in, since around the start of June - the contractors started adhering to the time regulations at least on Monday-Friday.

It has now become less about calling the noise team and more just keeping the windows closed except for a brief respite in the evenings and on Sundays.

The last time we called the noise team was on a Saturday late afternoon and they asked us to stay in the house while they sent a team out to investigate. The team then failed to show up.

We lost yet another day to sitting in the house, listening to drilling and it turned out the complaint had been mis-managed(?) and was followed up with a phone call and apology.

We try and get far away from the house on Saturdays now- nothing worse than attempting to have a lie in or sit and eat breakfast to a soundtrack of hammering, drilling, digging, shouting.

    • Something doesn't quite smell right here and probably it's not  the chicken. Both the OP and TheWeekEnd specifically mention  chicken thigh fillets. TWE purchased £14 worth of chicken thigh fillets and they were thrown away "probably for the third time". £14 equates to around 12 fillets which is a lot. Could some have been frozen after purchase and then thawed? And thawed properly before cooking? TWE has a total of 4 posts of which 3 are on this thread.
    • Thanks to all for the advice, very glad to have this community for these enquiries. Here is how it got resolved in case its useful for anyone in the future: I had ordered some garden waste bags, and when the Veolia person came around I just asked them, and they were more than happy to take it no questions asked. 🙂
    • I keep seeing a thread 'missing cat', but you've been found.  Not sure if all would consider that a good thing.  Not a lot new happening ....  When you back in Blighty?
    • In March Oli and his team did an excellent job of the following work at a property I manage.  1. Completely removing existing broken front path. Covering and securing the void (coal shute) beneath using concrete lintels, waterproof membrane and concrete. Laying a compacted sub-base and new clay pavers. 2. Removing broken fence. Securely installing 6 fence posts and 5 fence panels across the end of the back garden. Base of posts wrapped in plastic  sheath and set in post mix. 3. Removing broken render from terrace steps and cleaning then re-rendering steps where needed and repairing other parts.  4. Jet washing rear patio. I would like to thoroughly recommend him to you for a job done very well at a fair price.
