Quick summary of what's changed in ED in the past year?!

Recommended Posts

Evening all (well it's evening here anyway...)

Been living & working in Sydney for the past year and now VERY excited about coming home to ED in a few weeks... I've checked out the forum a couple of times and picked up:

- new Sainsbury's Local near the Plough

- Uplands to become new pub in same chain as Florence/Bishop

- lots of muggings around Barry/Goodrich Road in particular (eeek..scary)

Anyone able to catch me up on anything else quickly so i don't have to trawl through the posts?!

cheers & happy Easter!

I still haven't pulled

Oooh like the sound of the vodka sweet shop. And can't quite contain my excitement about the new sign at Chener Books.

To keep you in the loop on Sydney goings on

1) Andrew Clarke has finally dumped Lara Bingle (of "where the bloody hell are ya?" fame) which apparently was the most exciting story of the year judging by the media coverage

2) baby elephant miracle births and arrival of pandas from China manage to get onto the news on a daily basis

3) 60+ yr old granny's bum chewed off by shark but she fought it off & survived. Granny power.

4) Red dust storm turned the whole city into a Martain landscape back in September

5) Aus dollar is whooping Sterling

6) Sydney house prices are going through the roof

7) Vegemite still a poor imitation of Marmite

Actually live just down the road from the Surry Hills Bills' and was a bit disappointed the other day... $6 for a few measly slices of avocado on the side of my eggs on toast..

Well seeing as Ricky Martin's FINALLY come out i reckon it's only a matter of time for Bill to follow suit!

Have you eaten at the newly renovated Castle? Just had a squizz at a pic.. v posh. Really been missing my Sunday roasts so very exciting if they do this well as is just round the corner from my ED home :-)

Not eaten there no, we're the almost Forest Hill part of ED.

As stated the bit of Lordship Lane near The Plough is dragging itself up with new butcher and picture framer, FH station is now London Overground (OK not ED), they built a big modern looking new school on Peckham Rye, Thresher's shut down... etc.

And people whinged a lot.

I LOVE Sydney. Can't believe house prices are still going through the roof there though - if you thought we had it bad any Aussie worth his singlet will bang on about "renovating" and 300% increases. I think it all has something to do with copper. And China. Giving them some kind of economic shield....

Not sure if this was in the past year, time moves so far, but Inside 72 closed down and became the dreadful Adventure Bar. If you have kids then the Goose Green playground is being torn up and rebuilt to be a bit more fun, and Warwick Gardens has a new play area with lots of free trees.

Yep, MrBen I hear you.. I turned on the TV the other day and guess what came on.. a brand new series called..Phil Spencer DOWN UNDER!! And yes, all the chat amongst friends is "god, if I don't buy now I'm not going to be able to afford anything more than a shoebox"... all VERY deja vu of London about 4 yrs ago. Mind you, it really doesn't show any signs of faltering here at the moment - the Chinese as you say are the main reason the economy's so strong - they're gobbling up the natural resources coming out of Australia at the rate of knots to feed their industry and the Ozzies are doing very well out of it thanks very much! Plus on the property side, Sydney has a huuuge housing shortage and once you throw in anything vaguely near a view of the harbour the prices go insane... On the flip side, interest rates have just gone up again for the 4th month in a row, with more hinted at, so will be interesting to see how it all plays out...

Aaanyway.. thank you all very much for the info on our lovely ED. Can't wait to be home!

Andrew Clarke? Blimey he got in (and out) quickly. Especially as Michael Calrke just dumped her!

Surprising as NSW is broke. Australian success is riding on WA and QLD mining.

Marmite is sloppy muck. Vegemite is the Real Thing.

I've never understood the faciniation with Sydney. It looks good but is very shallow. A bit like Lara Bingle, really.

    • Hmmm, millions of animals are killed each year to eat in this country.  10,000 animals (maybe many more) reared to be eaten by exotic pets, dissected by students, experimented on by cosmetic and medical companies.  Why is this any different? Unless you have a vegan lifestyle most of us aren't in a position to judge.  I've not eaten meat for years, try not to buy leather and other animal products as much as possible but don't read every label, and have to live with the fact that for every female chick bred to (unaturally) lay eggs for me to eat, there will be male that is likely top be slaughtered, ditto for the cow/milk machines - again unnatural. I wasn't aware that there was this sort of market, but there must be a demand for it and doubt if it is breaking any sort of law. Happy to be proved wrong on anything and everything.
    • I don't know how spoillable food can be used as evidence in whatever imaginary CSI scenario you are imagining.  And yes, three times. One purchase was me, others were my partner. We don't check in with each other before buying meat. Twice we wrote it off as incidental. But now at three times it seems like a trend.   So the shop will be hearing from me. Though they won't ever see me again that's for sure.  I'd be happy to field any other questions you may have Sue. Your opinion really matters to me.
    • If you thought they were off, would it not have been a good idea to have kept them rather than throwing them away, as evidence for Environmental Health or whoever? Or indeed the shop? And do you mean this is the third time you have bought chicken from the same shop which has been off? Have you told the shop? Why did you buy it again if you have twice previously had chicken from there which was off? Have I misunderstood?
    • I found this post after we just had to throw away £14 of chicken thighs from Dugard in HH, and probably for the 3rd time. They were roasted thoroughly within an hour of purchase. But they came out of the oven smelling very woofy.  We couldn't take a single bite, they were clearly off. Pizza for dinner it is then. Very disappointing.
