In all probability a proper legal contract is/was in operation regarding usage of the facilities. This would have clearly established the arrangements for termination by either party, Such a contract would not normally stipulate that a reason be given for termination by either party. Similarly, the period of notice and the method of serving that notice will have been clearly stated. There has been no mention that Alleyns has breached the terms of the contract. In the unlikely event of the contract being published, then we can all speculate as much as we want but in the end a contract is a contract Termination is certainly a blow to Krys and we all sympathise. It also creates a degree of uncertainty for members of the swimming club but , at this stage, none of us know what the future will bring. Let's see what the future brings.
-
@DadOf4 You certainly feel very strongly about this but the reality is that none of us, outside Krys/Margaret and Alleyns ,are party to the facts. Until we know the facts then it may be inappropriate to heap opprobrium on Alleyns. Have you talked to Krys/Margaret? Are you acquainted with the contractual details of the business arrangement between them and Alleyns? If there has been a breach of contract then this can best be resolved by legal process. As none of us here are party to the contract details, and recent discussions ,then it unfair to castigate Alleyns unfairly.

There is no direct link between charitable status and VAT Free status however when VAT on fees come in, Alleyns will be registerd for vAT and will collect the tax on fees. Being registered for VAT , they will have to charge VAT on any other chargeable services they provide, such as for Tigersharks. The VAT on fees will be offset to a very small extent by reclaiming VAT on the costs of services and goods they incur. This will be miniscule as the bulk of their costs will be staff salaries. To offset the effects of VAT on fees, Alleyns will probably have to cut back on costs and this is where they may have to cut back on the charitable aspects of what they are involved with in the community. In some cases they may be faced with charging fees in the future for services and support which are currently free.
-
The way it seems is that the elephant in the room here is upcoming liability to VAT. To qualify for charity status, Alleyns was obliged to provide a wide variety of support to the wider community. Imposing VAT means the community obligation can be dispensed with . Should the Tigersharks access be continued then they will be liable to VAT at 20%. As to the other support that Alleys provides, then its up to them to decide whether they continue with it or whether they charge. Imposing VAT on private education will certainly have a wide range of unintended consequences.
-
Alleyns would most probably have based their decision on regular participation numbers by Tigersharks . You have mentioned a "group of 150 swimmers" but it might help if you can accurately quantify the regular attendance numbers. My understanding is that the regular participation is significantly less.

Sorry to disagree but they are highly intelligent creatures and have adapted their habits and behaviour to exist very successfully in an urban environment. The stupidity is prevalent amongst ourselves who leave food items around for them to feed on.

Charging VAT on private schools is totally out of step with other countries in Europe. Here is picture in the Europe:- . Germany: Private education fees are usually exempt from VAT. France: Private education fees are typically exempt from VAT, especially if the institution is recognized by the state. Spain: Private education services provided by recognized educational establishments are exempt from VAT. Italy: Educational services provided by recognized institutions are exempt from VAT. Netherlands: Private education services are exempt from VAT if the institution is recognized by the government. Belgium: Educational services provided by recognized institutions are exempt from VAT. Sweden: Private education is generally exempt from VAT. Denmark: Most educational services are exempt from VAT, but there are exceptions depending on the type of service. Ireland: Private education fees are exempt from VAT. Portugal: Private education is generally exempt from VAT. Austria: Private education services are generally exempt from VAT if they are recognized by the state. Finland: Private education services are exempt from VAT if they are provided by recognized institutions. Norway: Although not an EU member, Norway exempts private education services from VAT. Make of that as you may!

Moped crash scams around Barry Road/Underhill/Goodrich
vladi replied to Katie B a's topic in Roads & Transport
Presumably the perps reckon that high value vehicles will be more likely to be insured however in the UK only 4% of drivers are not insured so even my 20 year old jalopy might be vulnerable. Because of its age and the fact I never wash it means it is not in any way attractive to malcontents. So stay safe and never wash your car -just let the growth of green algae take over. -

I sympathise with the Council because if they make it too difficult or expensive to dispose of waste from vans then the amount of fly tipping increases. Limiting access to four vans per year also increases the potential for fly tipping. I would suggest having a charging system based on ANPR identification for vans. If there's usually no queue between 10am to 3pm on weekdays, then vans could be charged a reduced (modest) rate during that time slot and charged a higher rate outside those times. And the higher rate for more than 4 trips in a year. Forget the requirement to book in advance.

Advice welcomed - potential dog kennel hill estate flat purchase
vladi replied to Ves89's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I suggest you write to the estate agent asking specific questions and request a written response. Otherwise they will tell you anything to get a sale. -
Yes, it was all buzz when we went there 2 weeks ago and staff are very pleasant. Had an excellent calzone there.

You can't refuse. TW allows you up to a 12 months after installation during which time you can continue with the fixed rate system. Then after 12 months you go on the meter rates regardless. The one benefit of this is that the meter send readings on an hourly basis and if you have consumption being registered, when you would not expect it, (such as between 1am and 6am) , they will advise you that you have a leak somewhere and will give an estimate of how much extra this leakage will cost you after you go on the meter rates. That way you can fix your lea(s) in advance and save money. If you cannot find the leak inside the house, it may be outside underground, between your house and the water meter because your old lead pipe may be leaking. That stretch of pipe is your responsibility. Then you can ask them to help you find it and if you play your cards nicely and catch the TW guy on a good day, then TW will replace your old 1" pipe with a new blue 25mm pipe.

Which Dulwich - East/West/Village?
vladi replied to Dulwichprospect1986's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Indeed and possibly because with such an extensive wish list as stated, it will be a nigh on impossible to achieve a suitable property for that budget, outside the Village or Alleyn Park area. Even then, all wishes being equal, it would need > £3m to get a suitable property. Compromise would seem appropriate therefore , which suggests rating each "wish" in order of priority. -
Which Dulwich - East/West/Village?
vladi replied to Dulwichprospect1986's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I would look at the area between Dulwich and Herne Hill The link from Herne Hill station by Thameslink to St Pauls is superb. but it all depends on what rating ( 1 thro' 10) you give to each of the parameters you have identified. -
Food poisoning at Dugard & Daughters - twice!
vladi replied to ArchieCarlos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You might possibly consider that the the degree of scepticism and suspicion your original post encountered was largely due to the accusatory nature of the title in which you specifically identified a long-standing and respected local business. You also sensationalised the matter by using the words "poisoning" and "twice!" in the heading. -
@Earl, Be assured, it is purely a local group. In fact it is a genteel group of Dulwich area residents, mostly ladies , who are a little reluctant to publish their individual names as they do not wish to be targets for hostility from internet trolls. Local residents who attended the anti-LTN gatherings in Dulwich would have easily recognised the active members of the group. Should you have any queries about funding, it is quite easy to send them an email.

Food poisoning at Dugard & Daughters - twice!
vladi replied to ArchieCarlos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Something doesn't quite smell right here and probably it's not the chicken. Both the OP and TheWeekEnd specifically mention chicken thigh fillets. TWE purchased £14 worth of chicken thigh fillets and they were thrown away "probably for the third time". £14 equates to around 12 fillets which is a lot. Could some have been frozen after purchase and then thawed? And thawed properly before cooking? TWE has a total of 4 posts of which 3 are on this thread. -
