Food poisoning at Dugard & Daughters - twice!
vladi replied to ArchieCarlos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Making such a direct insinuation/accusation against a named retailer is clearly defamatory and damaging to the retailer's reputation. It will be considered by many to be libellous. Spartacus has rightly said there are many variables and other factors to be taken into account when cooking chicken. It is good policy to consider such factors before making direct such implications. -

A few months ago, we were put on a compulsory water meter and today received a letter saying that "your smart meter has alerted us that there's about 20 liters per hour flowing through your meter which usually means there is a leak" Firstly, it is not a smart meter, it is a simple meter 3 feet underground outside on the pavement. Secondly, we have no leaks and do not water the garden , ever. There is just two of us in the house and we are very frugal with water so I reckon this could be a money-making ploy by Thames Water which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Have any one else had a similar letter?

The ones you get on line are not effective as they are blunt and Fox's pads are very thick and tough. Blue carpet tacks are effective whist not doing any damage - just a brief sharp prick that makes them think twice!
-
We do that already with our neighbours either side, using 2 large custom-made composters. The aggregate volume means there is always enough heat generated constantly which accelerates the process. The output is shared. Between us we share one brown bin for thick branches that cannot be composted.

Suggest you get come Correx eg from an old estate agents sign and cut it into 50mm wide strips. Then get some carpet tacks (15mm long) Push the carpet tacks into and through the Correx at 25mm intervals so that the sharp ends stick upwards. Then attach the strip to the top of your fence where it is lowest. It doesnt injure them. It just makes it uncomfortable for them and they soon learn.

Easement - access across neighbouring property - any experience?
vladi replied to Angelina's topic in The Lounge
Generally you cannot impose a charge for the usage of that easement unless it has been specifically agreed upon in the legal documents establishing the easement or through subsequent agreements between the parties involved. An easement grants a non-owner the right to use another person's property for a specific purpose. The terms of the easement are typically outlined in legal documents, such as a deed or contract. These documents may specify any conditions or fees associated with the use of the easement. If the holder of the dominant lease (ie the person entitled to the easement) is willing to negotiate with you, then it's a matter of what it's worth to each of you. They can ask whatever they want for them to abandon their entitlement. -

A temporary set of traffic lights have been set up on EDG to create a pedestrian crossing. Location is between Gilkes Crescent and the main lights at EDG/Red Post Hill junction ie about 50 metres from the existing crossing. There is no work going on by ant=y contractors, so anyone know why the crossing is there?

They provide "instant boiling" water by running a heating element 24/7 inside a pressurised water reservoir under your sink. Big waste of energy and lots to go wrong .

I've been offered a piece of land in Kent that measure 16.5m x 16.5m. Would that be sufficient to allow the build of a pair of semi-detached houses with off-street parking?

Having seen several adverts on TV for these taps, I felt it appropriate to check out how they work and how much they cost to purchase and operate. They work by keeping a metal flask of water under the sink at a temperature at around 108 deg centigrade. It keeps the water at that temperature 24/7 in readiness for when you want to use hot water. Depending on the model and capacity the electrical rating is between 800watts and 3 Kilowatts electrical . Price of the tap varies from £375 to £1, 340 and then there's installation of piping and electrics on top of that. Is there anyone out there who is ready to admit that they have one installed?
-
Yes, they messed up that junction when they put the cycle wands a few years ago. And they still plan to retain them even though very few cyclists use that junction going North bound. None of the other arms at this junction have cycle wands They are getting rid of all the pedestrian refuges so that will mean reworking the traffic signals that are located there. More expense! Many more cyclists go North via Greendale from Townley Road. It's much safer.

The only really secure method is to use a steering wheel immobiliser. Been around for years and never been defeated. Get one from around £18

Living in hope that new investment will spawn new technologies to replace the blast furnace process to make pig iron is a pipe dream. So why scrap the two blast furnaces before there is any hint of an alternative? It's plain crazy! Making pig iron is a chemical process only achieved at the high temperatures achieved by using high quality coke. iron ore, lime and oxygen. The pig iron output is later made into steel using the Bessemer refining process.

What some us may not have grasped is that proposed new electric arc furnaces will largely be using raw steel made by blast furnaces owned by Tata in India and then shipped half way round the world to the UK.. Some of the input will be scrap metal. So it appears this is largely a matter of off-shoring the carbon problem and creating more jobs in India at the expense of the Port Talbot workforce. It's a win for the politicos who can enhance their green credentials. And a win to Tata who make more profits. Meanwhile our Port Talbot workers are shafted. Giving up the blast furnaces means also that there will be no need for coking coal in the UK and so the new mine near Whitehaven. Result; is more jobs lost. What a way to run a country!

"Jibes" is far too strong a noun to describe my mild but subtle observations. They were intended ( with a wry smile) to prompt a reader to investigate further. Both Pilger and Batmanghelidhjh undoubtedly were well intentioned and fully committed to their aims. I was impressed in many ways with Batmanghelidhjh's caring and benevolence however she was never a capable administrator or manager. Her legacy would have garnered more acclaim if The Kids Company had a competent manager in charge. I am less accommodating for Pilger. You were correct in mentioning that he got it wrong in later life. He was flawed character. Check out PressReader.com - Digital Newspaper & Magazine Subscriptions But I could be wrong on both counts, but then I don't read the Gruniad.

The water companies lobbied hard to make the installation of meters compulsory. It's the lobbying that is the scandal. They lobbied for meter for reasons as follows:- 1. It will reduce consumption and this will allow the water companies to reduce reservoir capacity. So they save money in terms of upkeep of the dams , facilities and equipment associated with the reservoirs 2. With fewer reservoirs, they can sell off the land preciously used by the reservoirs to developers 3. And now for one that not many people have considered is that they can introduce variable pricing . Hence in a drought year they could increase the price.

The scandal relates to the methods by which the owners of the water companies and other utilities have bled these companies dry by by various financial strategies. Without exception, the utilities were debt free when privatise. They also had significant assets in the form of land and property. The foreign buyers operating in different tax jurisdictions adopted the following strategies:- 1. Sell off assets - such as land in the water catchment areas. 2 Sell off other assets such as buildings and other property. 3. Pay massive dividends to the parent company overseas. 4. Take on debt to fund the dividends. 5. Take on ore debt - which can be offset against tax. The worst offenders are such "investors" a McQuarrie Bank ( Australia) and the Ontario Teachers Pensioni fund to mention just two. There are many others. Our Tory Government treats such buy-outs as "Inward Investment" and they brag about how much more inward investment the UK gets compared to other European countries. The reality, sadly, is that these foreign takeovers remove these utilities from the UK tax base so the Exchequer has less tax income. Less tax, means less funding for education, NHS, infrastructure etc etc. Other countries such as France and Germany have legislation which is targeted towards preventing foreign take overs. They protect their tax base. I could give you the names of 50 utilities and large businesses that are foreign owned and which pay no UK tax. Just look up Cadburys and the promises that Mondolez made about manufacturing, employment, tax etc etc

Only celebrate? Don't you mean commemorate? Death should only be "celebrated" if it's the demise of someone demonic such as Hitler or Stalin. Surely the thread is a platform for discussing the deceased's character, merits, achievements and failings plus many other things etc, etc. We all know they died before anyone has even posted it on EDF RIP, so why limit the thread to posting the record of their passing. We don't all share the same views. Let us express our feelings freely.

Water metering is a scandal that merits another ITV drama-documentary along the lines of Mr Bates vs The Post Office. The lobbyists who "persuaded" MPs to pass the legislation should be investigated. I'd dearly like to know how many ex-MP's now work for the utility companies or the foreign private equity companies who bought out the water companies.
