Smooth talking and shameless opportunist. Asked for an up-front callout fee of £40 just to have a look despite the job being accurately specified. His quote for the job was disproportionately excessive and was on top of the call out fee. He fails to appreciate that some customers might know more about plumbing than he does and they won't be taken in by any spiel designed to "big-up" the job and so try to justify disproportionate charges. If you need plumbing done, best to go elsewhere.

Is there an architectural salvage business around these parts. I'm looking for a few 4" (Internal) red clay land drainage pipes (12" long) and some other related items.

Only problem is that all the major components ( chassis, motor, gearbox ,axles, batteries etc) are made in China. They arrive here as fully assembled and running chassis. Only the external bodywork is added in the UK. A few decades ago, the UK had a highly successful bus manufacturing industry that exported busses all over the world. Such brands as Leyland, AEC, Guy, Albion and Dennis spring to mind. Sad, very sad!

I have always found them reliable and dependable. I have tried various couriers (both sending and receiving) over the years and DPD are one of the best, alongside Fed Express and DHL The one to avoid at all costs is Evri. They were previously known as Hermes but were so consistently bad they had to change their name to Evri.

That's for sure! Any government has to protect the tax revenue stream. Hence as more people adopt EV's, the tax take on petrol and diesel consumption decreases. Similarly as fewer people smoke tobacco, the overall tax take deceases. So they have to increase other taxes somehow. The latest tax madness is to penalise has been subsidising heat pumps but these are inefficient, expensive and have a limited lifetime. They also produce lower temperatures necessitating replacement of all existing radiators with much larger ones. It's all a big con based on bait and switch.

I make nesting boxes and have a spare sparrow nesting "terrace". This "terrace" is a wooden box with 3 separate nesting boxes all joined together. Sparrows are gregarious and like nesting in groups Ideally it should be mounted on a North-facing wall and close to an open area such as a park or overgrown vacant lot. Even better if you have seen sparrows in the area. If you think your location can meet these criteria, please get in touch and I will check out the location. Should be positioned under the eaves, facing North to North East Photos adde to show front that hinges down for cleaning purposes.

The questionnaire doesn't seem to bear much relationship to the geography that I was taught. It speaks volumes about the failure of our education system in terms of its priorities and orientation.

@Malumbu Some Councils subsidise the cost of replacing lead supply pipes within the boundary of the house owners property. So was that the reason the replaced the pipe across your garden?

Food poisoning at Dugard & Daughters - twice!
vladi replied to ArchieCarlos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If , as you say, you both have been sick twice from eating poultry in the last month, then I would suggest that your storage and cooking procedures should be reviewed. Food poisoning is very, very rare. I havnt hand an incidence in the last 20 years. -

Making such a direct insinuation/accusation against a named retailer is clearly defamatory and damaging to the retailer's reputation. It will be considered by many to be libellous. Spartacus has rightly said there are many variables and other factors to be taken into account when cooking chicken. It is good policy to consider such factors before making direct such implications. -

A few months ago, we were put on a compulsory water meter and today received a letter saying that "your smart meter has alerted us that there's about 20 liters per hour flowing through your meter which usually means there is a leak" Firstly, it is not a smart meter, it is a simple meter 3 feet underground outside on the pavement. Secondly, we have no leaks and do not water the garden , ever. There is just two of us in the house and we are very frugal with water so I reckon this could be a money-making ploy by Thames Water which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Have any one else had a similar letter?

The ones you get on line are not effective as they are blunt and Fox's pads are very thick and tough. Blue carpet tacks are effective whist not doing any damage - just a brief sharp prick that makes them think twice!

We do that already with our neighbours either side, using 2 large custom-made composters. The aggregate volume means there is always enough heat generated constantly which accelerates the process. The output is shared. Between us we share one brown bin for thick branches that cannot be composted.

Suggest you get come Correx eg from an old estate agents sign and cut it into 50mm wide strips. Then get some carpet tacks (15mm long) Push the carpet tacks into and through the Correx at 25mm intervals so that the sharp ends stick upwards. Then attach the strip to the top of your fence where it is lowest. It doesnt injure them. It just makes it uncomfortable for them and they soon learn.

Easement - access across neighbouring property - any experience?
vladi replied to Angelina's topic in The Lounge
Generally you cannot impose a charge for the usage of that easement unless it has been specifically agreed upon in the legal documents establishing the easement or through subsequent agreements between the parties involved. An easement grants a non-owner the right to use another person's property for a specific purpose. The terms of the easement are typically outlined in legal documents, such as a deed or contract. These documents may specify any conditions or fees associated with the use of the easement. If the holder of the dominant lease (ie the person entitled to the easement) is willing to negotiate with you, then it's a matter of what it's worth to each of you. They can ask whatever they want for them to abandon their entitlement. -
