Ted, are you hopping from one foot to another like a small boy bursting for a pee, desperate to unleash your finely crafted riddle on the unsuspecting p[layers of the EDF "Who am I"? game/ Go ahead

Sydney Carton is right I'll do a far far better thing and give it to Muley, who got the name (sorry Ted)

In the UK any adult convicted of murder will be sentenced to life imprisonment unless they are the subject of a Mental Health Act disposal. The court will fix a minimum term before they can be considered for parole, which is fixed by reference (broadly) to the need for punishment, public protection and rehabilitation. Sometimes it's pretty short, sometimes it's very long, but it doesn't actually determine when people are released - that's for the parole board. After release there is a lifetime licence i.e. you can be recalled at any time, and not just for re-offending, but alos for looking risky. Re-offending rates for murder are low. It's not a perfect system, and obviously won't satisfy someone who is completely wedded to capital punishment, but it's not exactly airy-fairy liberal either - the UK has successfully argued that a 'whole life' tariff is consistent with ECHR and we can expect that the most dangerous/dreadful murderers will never be released.

"I'm a driver and a cyclist. I think that the behaviour of some cyclists cause resentment and antagonism amongst drivers and this can pose a danger to other cyclists who may bear the brunt of this." I'm a driver and a cyclist too. I sometimes get annoyed at the antics of other cyclists, both when I'm driving and when I'm cycling. But I don't take my annoyance out on other cyclists by driving like a cock and putting people in danger. Do you?

cyclists and drivers are both legitimate road users, some good, some bad, but: bad cyclist + car = bust wing mirror or dented wing (very rarely) bad driver + cyclist = broken leg or death (all too common) worth thinking about the next time you're in your car. Cyclists need a bit more room, not a bit less - we have more to lose

Break In - Barry Road - Yesterday Afternoon
DaveR replied to Jiggin's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Jiggin, sorry to hear about the break in - I live on Barry road and I'll be keeping an eye out. On the general topic, burglars target multi-occupancy premises because street door security is weaker and once in they have more time and can make more noise getting through the individual flat doors - particularly if they are all empty in the middle of the day. The only way to tackle it is for landlords and tenants to agree beefed up security for street doors (fit a mortice lock and everybody uses it all the time) and flat doors, to make it genuinely difficult to smash your way in - I would talk to the landlord about this. -
It's not whether the opinion of bloggers/amateur critics are valid but whether they should be accorded any more weight than any other individual Somewhere on this thread (or another) Foodstories used the phrase "us foodies do tend to get a little over excited about the food, we can't help it!" and someone else introduced themselves with "I'm a London food blogger"; consciously or not, it seems to me to be seeking to invest yourself with a bit more authority than A N Other contributor (hence the violent collision between the worlds of EDF and Twitter/blogging). It's perfectly possible to be passionate and ill-informed about a subject.

It's a nightmare. One route which is longer but less frustrating, if not reliably much quicker, is Clapham South - Nightingale Lane - Burntwood lane - Plough Lane - Haydons Road - A238 all the way to Kingston, then over Kingston Bridge.

I like the Palmerston. I've never had a bad meal there, always thought it was pretty good value, and always had adequate service, although I wouldn't say that's their strongest suit. I'm not keen on the Herne - I like their aspirations but imo they are not organised enough to deliver. I also like Franklins, although again I wouldn't say their service is great, and on occasions I've not found many menu dishes that really appealed - that's just my taste, I guess. However, what I really f*cking hate is when someone comes on here and slags of anybody who disagrees with them, in a sneery and childish way, and simultaneously tries to elevate their own subjective judgment into received wisdom.

This is from the BT website: "If your house has had a BT phone service in the recent past and the line still has a dialling tone, it's likely it won't cost you anything to get your line working again (you can check for dial tone by plugging a telephone into the BT socket and lifting the receiver). You'll just have to pay your line rental (either monthly or quarterly), cost of calls, and for any additional services you require from BT." However, when previous occupants leave and close their account, BT 'cut off' the service - no dial tone = reconnection charge. If the flat you are moving into already has a functioning BT line, I suggest you call their customer service people, draw their attention to the statement above, and don't give up until they agree to waive the charge. You will have to ask to be 'escalated' to the highest level complaints team. Either that or ask about deals whereby they don't charge to reconnect if you take out an 18 month contract.

On the west coast the most popular beach spots are Langkawi and Pangkor - both islands, but easily accessible by ferry or by air. Langkawi is more developed and has plenty of hotels, including some very smart (and consequently very pricy) ones. The main beaches are Cenang and Tengah, which are next to each other, and have lots of places to stay, eat, and do holiday type stuff. I was in Langkawi in April with the family and had a good time. The drawback is that many of the hotels in Langkawi are not great and are overpriced by Malaysian standards. In Pangkor I've only been to Pangkor Laut, which is a private island resort, and is fab but expensive. There are beaches in Penang, lots of hotels and facilities but the water is a bit murky. The best beaches in Malaysia are on the west coast - the water is much clearer. Again, the islands are the most popular - Perhentians, Tioman and Redang. I'm told that Perhentian has the best beaches, but not much in the way of facilities (and no booze). BTW, in November it's going to rain - a lot.

The outrageous case of Singh versus the chiropractics
DaveR replied to Reg Smeeton's topic in The Lounge
From a legal perspective it's quite a surprising ruling, effectively ruling out a "recklessness" based interpretation of the words i.e. "the BCA happily promote treatments that are in fact bogus, without caring or taking any proper steps to check whether they are or aren't". I would have thought that this is an equally natural meaning of the phrase. Bad news for Singh though - he'll have to appeal. -
"I'd just been asked to leave the +venture bar when I was run off the pavement by a lady with a bugaboo full of meat from William Rose, running to get her school application in on time - it would never have happened in the old days when ED was a nice, dangerous, honest, unattractive working class neighbourhood with proper shops (like Nunhead still is)."

new bar on LL - BoHo Bar where amusement arcade used to be
DaveR replied to Mick Mac's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I hate to slag it off before it's even opened, but calling it the 'Boho Bar' is a bad start. Even worse if it's 'BoHo Bar' It's like changing your name to Mr V. Cool. Everyone will know your real name is Mr Hopeless Smallcock. -
