Fair point quids, and I do love Oscar Wilde even if he was a pompous arse. You can keep Jane Austen though. As it goes I thought Daisy Miller was alright, so maybe it's not James per se, but agree with the others about The Ambassadors, truly numbing.

I got a mystified look when I asked for a martini, which was quite amusing, though in fairness the rest of the staff chuckled and atught him how. It was immediately apparent a disaster was unfolding so somebody else made one immediately and left me the disaster should I feel so inclined. It's not my demographic or my preferred destination, but it's fine every now and then frankly.

Are You mad?!?! I live in Denmark Hill Village thank you very much. Yours Mockney Iscariot and a very happy new year to all!!!

The Ivanhoe was hardly the height of imagination, pubs should have proper names like The Slaughtered Lamb or The Green Man, nice bit of folk tale and witchcraft. It all went downhill when we started naming pubs after princes regent and imperial consorts if you ask me!!

ok, pulls finger out and fnds out a bit more http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/the-daily-mash--satirical-scatological-and-already-profitable-899541.html Scotsman, Daily Record, all the same innit?

I did have a look into it once, and it from what I recall it was set up by a couple of frustrated journos on the Daily Record, but don't quote me on that,

I'm with the detractors, I can't really see what all the fuss was about regards Inside 72. It was alright as long as there weren't more than 2 people in there, and the playlist was ok, but repetitive and frankly not really all that; I mean I've just heard Electralane, Fort Wayne, Album Leaf and Viva Voce played in a depressingly corporate pub off Warren St this lunchtime, can't be that hard. Best music I've heard on the lane is in Roullier White, maybe we should get them to set up a bar in the small room at the back where I can sit and look cooler than everyone else with my beret, woodbines and bum-fluff moustache. And I reckon we do alright Cityjules, I've lived here from mid 20s to mid 30s and the transition hasn't been hard.

EDF Drinks at The Phoenix this Friday 9th January

Have you ever thought about getting that broken record of yours fixed there AD ;-) -
James, the "*ahem, shifts nervously*" was rather suggesting that I was referring to myself. I'll remember to use the tags next time
-
Maybe, maybe not. Clearly it's not to the taste of your average thirty something blow-in *ahem, shifts nervously*, but it seems to be going down a storm with the late teens early twenties brigade, and I think you might be surprised at how many really are from hereabouts. Or maybe they are from Croydon/Lewisham. Ho hum. thumbs up to quids quote. *edited*

Trying too hard is a bit unfair, damned if you do, damned if you don't. So they're enjoying their work and trying to give good service. Much as I could ironically appreciate the aloofness of the service at inside 72, it really actually boiled down to staff sitting there chatting with their mates didn't it. And though it is a younger crowd, that's madly exacerbated at the moment by everyone being back from uni and checking out the new bar. Yeah, it's all a bit 1995, but it does what it says on the tin, and though the cocktails aren't in any way wow factor, they are quite potable (nowhere on the lane has wow factor cocktails mind). If there's a market for it it'll do ok. If you think there's a market for too cool for school people being miserable to an 'eclectic' soundtrack of Jeff Buckley, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley ad naueseum (and I can already think of a few) then go for it. In short, it's not really my thing, but I can happily pop in for some two-for-ones and ultimately I'm probably just a bit old for it; no reason to hate it though. Half the people here don't like the Castle, but they don't bleat on constantly about it's Pogues playlist, disturbing pictures of Robbie Keane and the cracks in the wall decor, they just avoid it.

see the thread I believe you started. 11 damn pages of opinions on the place.

Genius as ever. "There would also be regular dinners at the Dorchester where players would be awarded points for correctly identifying the dessert fork and then bonus points for not jamming it in someone's windpipe."

Haven't been out in pubs or clubs since about 2001. After one too many disappointing evenings with far too much time spent queueing at the bar, have generally spent nights in with mates. Just a quiet one this year, a couple of mates over and a few faces popping their heads in on their way to other parties. Really rather looking forward to it, especially as there's a world class rum heading my way :)

Portrait of a Lady. I had to study Henry James as part of my literature bit at uni; god how I struggled with that one, seriously tedious. Hats off to anyone who made it past the fascinating encounter on the lawn. "Under certain circumstances there are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea." Yeah, but few hours less agreeable than reading about tedious people taking afternoon tea.

hear hear keef, I'm sick to death of celebrity being taken into account when sentencing. Mind you, I'm also in favour of community service instead of custodials where sensible (regardless of celebrity) and footballers really can be good role models, so giving them 600 hours of training kids clubs in run down estates can't e a bad thing either. Mind you, he's still a twonk if it turns out he got involved in a fracas, he's old enough to know better frankly.

I do mine on a wireless connection. Wired always best, but I've rarely noticed the difference unless the missus happens to be watchin iPlayer on her laptop or uploading emails with huge attachments

Crazy season when you can go top half of the table and still worry about relegation; still, not complaining one little bit!!

"I'll get by nose punched" It sounds like you already have!!

Agreed Sean, most Catholics brought up as such (Spain and Ireland being where I know most from) seem to have a very cherry-picking attitude to what suits them and what doesn't. I've met a few converts in my time who tend to be less questioning (is that the word?). I'd be interested to know what TB has to say about this one.

Well here are the catechisms on homosexuality; at once ignorant, arrogant and supremely patronising. They of course might want to get their own house in order and persuade abusive priests of the "[call] to chastity...by the virtues of self-mastery", leave alone protecting the sick fucks, before lecturing anyone else!!! *now I'm no expert but I beleive the gospels have next to nothing to say about this other than some general attendance at non-gay weddings, so the sacred scripture referred to must be OT, which of course has a lot of very weird things to say about a lot of weird subjects. Nothing in the catechism about avoiding shellfish for instance. Damned cherry-pickers. emphasis mine
-
I just found it a weird thing to say. So it's ok to be gay as long as you don't actually have sex, but we'd much rather there weren't any gays at all (even though it's not a sin to be gay, obviously as god made gays, he just doesn't want them to have sex apparently) because it confuses gender issues and the world will die out as it forgets how to procreate even though over population is clearly much more of an issue, isn't it, isn't it? Basically what a tit*!!! *that's a non gender specific tit, it could be genuine or it could be a transgender tit, wow, it really is confusing.
