I first saw it as a japanese bank and a dutch bank when I worked for ABN. True of many facets of life I imagine.
  5. Any religion that professes to know right from wrong, while preaching intolerance and hatred, is just plain wrong. If they have a human written book as your source of divine rules, then tell me they ain't human rules. Add to that how much interpretation can change in a moment (blessed are the cheesemakers) leave alone in the course of a century or two (they don't refer to cheesemakers literally but makers of all dairy products), throw in some stuffy councils 500 years and 800 years and 1500 years after the facts, or learned interpretations 1400 years later, and well, you end up with nice teachers jailed for playing with teddy bears. Regards Snorky's final point, I'm with you. All this inciting-hatred law stuff is counter-productive. You can't kill ideas by imprisoning the progenitors and preachers of those ideas. You have to allow open discourse else all you serve to do is create martyrs and glorify those ideas.

    a joke

A scout group and a UK government department decided to have a canoe race on the Thames. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race. On the big day, the scouting team won by a mile. The government department, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action. Their conclusion was the scouting team had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the government team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing. So management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion. They advised that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing. To prevent another loss to the scouts, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager. They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the "Rowing Team Quality First Program," with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices and bonuses. The next year the scouts won by two miles. Humiliated, the departmental management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and cancelled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses and the next year's racing team was outsourced to India.

  9. Good stuff EDA, I've seen a couple of things that do this sort of thing before. I'm not sure work will appreciate the bandwidth, but hey. I've gone for Neko Case and I'm now on the 4th Neko Case. This is of course a good thing, but does no-one else sound like her? * edited - he he, they tried the Dixie Chicks, I turned it down and it's back to Neko, ooh and another ;) *
  10. Did you see the family guy pastiche of poltergeist last night? For the clown-in-the-bedroom-scene, Ronald appeared and drew his golden arches. I'm still curious as to where Karter got his info from.
  11. Really? Where are you getting this from. As far as I can tell it's owned by Gerry Ford with an equity firm as the substantial shareholder. They bought Aroma coffee off McDonalds a few years back, but can find no evidence that McDonalds own them. Personally I'm alright with Nero, and have often said that at least it's home grown (see discussions passim about 'Italian Coffee' Company vs Italian 'Coffee Company'). I use it here in Camden all the time; I don't in Dulwich as generally I'd rather have a nice pint.
  12. Fair enough snorky, but this was done a little while back, with full cooperation of the teaching staff and headmaster, locals, none of whom raised a murmur. Some demagogue has got hold of this further down the line and is kicking up a stink. I'm sure she'll get found guilty, a slap on the wrist (hopefully not a couple on the back) and be booted out the country after pressure from foreign office. It is all totally ridiculous though.
  13. SatLav. Genius naming!! http://londonist.com/2007/11/find_a_toilet_b.php

  20. As we've seen, much discussion over value of a pint/bottle here http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,67408 and that anything less than ?3.50 in a tied pub is a loss leader. That said, sympathies to affected publicans aside for a moment, I avoid places that are that expensive, and generally drink bitter where possible as it's a)nicer* and b)cheaper. Incidentally I was first charged more than ?3 for a pint in Croydon back in 1997 in what's now Yates, struggling to remember what it was back then. *I can't do fighting lager any more, only cooking, and it's generally of a pretty poor standard.
  21. yep, give me usage rather than utilisation any day. Utilised extensibility doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of an applied value-solution. oops. Longer doesn't mean better.
  22. All that for nowt Mark? Superb. Almost tempted, but having it at home as per (no asset, not for all forumites, sorry)
  23. I'm not sure there's anything you could say that would surprise or shock us is there? You've been disarmingly (or is that aquatically) honest with us up to now.
