  1. Sooooo, we're busy telling the bar it's great but there are no customers? ;-)
  2. Huguenot never did quantity, more volume (baddam tish)
  3. and juuuust in case anyone is willing to believe that X Factor Judge == talent, here's a reminder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwLFMdlZgAg No need to do one for Cheryl, I'm pretty sure it's self evident.
  4. A monopod can be useful for increasing your mobility, but I agree that good light is paramount. Of course there are fast zoom lenses too, but by golly the prices are terrifying.
  5. Not to mention tourism, software, research ... the list goes on, doesnt have to be forks and shoes, though again, quality clothing is another one we do (admittedly some of that is just stitching posh labels on to stuff made in Vietnam, but hey)
  6. surely to be emperor's new clothes, there must be no actual bar there, just lots of people pretending to drink and have a good time. Or is there a less literal interpretation of your metaphor to be had?
  7. what a load of cock about nothing that all was. He better start earning those wages as he's shit at the moment!!
  8. oooh, chimes. Good shout Katie. Yep, have staggered out of there too often after a quality pie and deceptively strong cider!!
  9. The much maligned "I Can Cook" on cbeebies is full of ideas, though admittedly I'd rather they did cauliflower cheese than asparagus frittata, but you can't have everything. Katy....*sighs*
  10. ACtually, for once I completely agree snorks, I've been thinking that myself every night they come on the news.
  11. I've actually really liked Portillo (small door, great name) ever since he retired from politics. If he'd shown himself to be so thoughtful and measured during his tory era he mightn't have ended up the poster boy for Tory smarm that he was. His documentaries, especially the one on the Spanish Civil War are actually pretty good too.
  12. The Newman Arms on Rathbone st off Charlotte St does mightily good (and very reasonably priced) pies upstairs and is a cute gem of a pub downstairs, though can get crowded, it being about 4'x 6' in size.
  13. Not really, just good marketing. Every study ever here shows that the British Public isnt yet reconciled with the idea of GM foods, probably influenced by lots of headlines with the word Frankenstein in them.
  14. LOL, very good mick
  15. The Taliban or Al-Qaeda? I think it's generally accepted that the Taliban were the brainchild of the ISI isn't it? It is a very good documentary, but like Curtis' other work somewhat overeggs the pudding. That's not to say he doesnt have valuable insights. The Trap is well worth a watch too, though less relevant now New Labour is dead (it must be true, red ed sed so).
  16. "but ED is (in truth) an architecturally unremarkable place" Spot on. The East Dulwich tourist board should consider "East Dulwich, hey it's no Castle Combe, but then it's no Stevenage Town Centre either". And much as I love the place, noone else in London has even heard of it, unless they pass through it on the way from Penge, which isn't saying an awful lot is it.
  17. And I can't resist, but the problem with Tainter is that he's come up with a clever idea and tries to get the facts to fit them, while losing sight of the sheer weight and body of evidence provided by boring sciences like, err, history and archaeology rather than anthropological complexity theory. As a codicil to your axiom above I would say just because we want something to be true, doesn't make it so. Sadly that's exactly how far too many people think, children or no. Edited 1 time(s). 18. This zeiss 1700mm f4 has good zoom capability and is big enough to attach the windscreen wipers from your g-wizz after it's been sheared in half by a soft breeze
  19. "Just because we rely on something happening doesn't mean it will; that's how children think" That's a bit harsh as a sweeping statement L. To be fair that's how 100% of us function day to day or we wouldnt step straight into our showers, get on a plane, make a phone call on an iPhone, actually scratch that last one. But agreed critical thinking never hurt anyone.
  20. I can't imagine how I missed that post Huguenot ;-/
  21. "Historically, every civilisation prior to ours has collapsed" Really? Not a popular view these days. You've been eating gibbon again haven't you.
  22. is this in the wrong thread? I can't see a single reference to manufacturing in any of the three pages. It is an interesting point though, the FP article I referred on another thread had a section on how Japan suffered because it failed to rebalance its economy away from manufacturing to services as it became better off resulting in a lack of competition, poor provision and ridiculously high prices for services, and ultimately caused terrible problems for the Japanese economy. I relink here, it's a very good read and worth 15 minutes of people's time, if they have 15 minutes spare. http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2010/09/30/the_japan_syndrome?page=full
  23. Microsoft updates ;)
  24. ain't going to be me. I'll (hopefully) have new job soon which always impacts my posting significantly. btw can you tell I'm seeing out redundancy notice at the moment? I'm pretty sure my recent history looks like this: / / / / __^_____^_
  25. Marvellous, life begins etc etc. Felicitati?nes. Mind you that ratty, he's been acting like a cunt since 1970.
