Somewhere "different" in London to get married
mockney piers replied to SCSB79's topic in The Lounge
The old town hall in bethnal green, went to a wedding there in late summer and it was pretty special http://www.weheart.co.uk/2010/05/10/town-hall-hotel-bethnal-green/ -
Quite Loz, I get freaked out at live football matches that there isn't an instant replay with those offside lines and shaded Reas appearing on the pitch

Ha ha yes, trying to fall asleep after too much tertris is a wholly weird experience! Wanting to phone my misplaced keys, remote control, wallet, nice shoes etc. Actually I reckon this one might be just a matter of time.

After another attack this morning i was just wondering whether anyone else suffers from this. it's basically a crossover in conceptual understanding of the real world and how we interface with technology. Symptoms, personally speaking, include: Constantly trying to point at things in the real world with my mouse Getting annoyed that singing a song to myself doesn't increment the number of plays in my iTunes library Increased anxiety in lifts when i can't shoot out the overhead bulb Admiring sunsets and wondering what the resolution is Looking at nooks and crannies in my surroundings and working out how I'll get up there Looking at nooks and crannies in my surroundings and avoiding snipers Mentally highlighting an unfamiliar word in a book and hitting the 'definition' button Anyone....anyone...?

Iran says won't send condemned woman to Brazil
mockney piers replied to DJKillaQueen's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Iran is a young republic, born out of a genuinely popular revolution and a subsequent political and religious terror. It still has to find it's future path to the sort of country it wants to be. There has been a quiet struggle for the centre of power that's been going on for the best part of 25 years that hasn't ended yet. Cases like this inevitbly have to be seen through that lens. Who is trying to appeal to whom, what power base are you trying to shore up, and ultimately what is the real end result once the the rhetoric and posturing is over. I've said before that Ahmedinajad's usurpation of the presidency wasn't the real battle, but the one between the religious power, the executive, the legislative, and of course, the people, is ongoing, and i hope for Irans sake it can be resolved within the political realm. Here's a short but succinct article that sets it out nicely. http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2010/11/24/is_this_really_the_end_for_ahmadinejad -
I expected more schadenfruede after the arsenal result, curiously quiet. And yep, this time we are definitely going down, and yep Simon, that is just too funny; surely not!!!!!!!

Peak Oil - the coming catastrophe
mockney piers replied to wjfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You're all getting silly now. For a sensible idea of what we face you need to read Max Brooks' World War Z http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=5MBCDlb9jDkC&dq=world+war+z&source=bl&ots=egKODe3Svu&sig=88lKMJLQRW2shAwVHjzhQJ3FqPo&hl=en&ei=cHvnTOLaAYeqhAe51onwDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=10&ved=0CEQQ6AEwCQ -

Similar experience, Miami to Guatemala City on American. Plane was ancient, once onn plane an hours delay due to technical difficulties. I was terrified the whole journey we'd drop out the sky. Seats were worn thin, burly and rude air hosts threw a pack of peanuts at me and there was no booze. Will avoid AA in future if I can. Guatemala's national carrier only has brand new airbuses and staff polite and friendly; if you have the option....

Couple kidnapped by pirates - update?
mockney piers replied to Tarot's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
A bit harsh Huguenot. From what i recall from articles at the time, they were on their way to one of the mid Indian ocean islands, had cleared their route with the authorities that deemed it a safe route and were captured something like 200 miles further out than any previous capture of it's ilk by Somali pirates. Rather than cretinous it would appear they were just victims of bad luck. -
The disrespecting of remembrance day by Muslim extremists!!
mockney piers replied to untamedstylist's topic in The Lounge
We'll go with not logical then. Sadly Bush's constant use of the term crusade, and the deliberate framing of the war on terror as a clash of civilisations only served to stoked the flames, which of course played as much into Bin Laden's hands as it did into Cheney's. -

"didn't some white christian british Celtic fans similarly insult the memory of our veterans a few days ago?" See my comments a few posts back, catch up ;) Must have taken more than 35 people mind. -
The disrespecting of remembrance day by Muslim extremists!!
mockney piers replied to untamedstylist's topic in The Lounge
How can anyone be pissed off with the west for the crusades? That's ludicrous. That's like still being pissed off with the Mongols for Gengis Khan. Plus it's a bit having it both ways to remember their being invaded, but conveniently forgetting the fact that the original Muslim Arabs invaded pretty much everyone, including Spain and France 300 years before the crusades, and invaded Europe again 300 years later, stopped at the gates of Vienna. Anyway, even discussing Islam in respect to this is missing the point. Islamism as a political philosophy owes an infinitely greater debt to Robespierre than it does Mohammed. -

Still preferable to 'dissing'. All told a storm in a teacup. This sort of stunt is singularly designed for publicity. Just ignore them and starve them of the proverbial oxygen. I was actually more irked by the Celtic fans anti remembrance day banner (again an idiotic minority). At the very least it was a betrayal of the 100,000 Irish who felt defeating hitler was a good thing, half of whom came from the republic; leave alone the 50,000 Irish dead of the first war. But this is the nature of divisive politics, it tends to be self absorbed and nihilistic and rarely has any grounding in the complexities and grey areas of the real world. So like I say, whether islamist, sectarian or blairite, the best thing to do is ignore it and forget about it. -
Hmmm, like the jedward joke eventually fell flat, I fear this may be wagner's final week. Pity.

Agree. I'm really not an elton John fan, just don't like his songs, but like them or not it's conspicuous just how badly the contestants are doing with them, which must reflect well on Elton's vocal talent and performances. I liked pinball wizard mind, but i dont think that was one of his was it.

Working in Finland in the New Year (for 4 months)
mockney piers replied to Ladymuck's topic in The Lounge
Helsinki was a bit like London, a very wet cold and the snow good for snowmen. The real cold was in the arctic circle, but that too (like beijing) was a very dry cold and quite pleasant as it goes (as long as you have your thermals) with powdery snow like polystyrene. The best thing was how any moisture in the air froze and it was like having glitter in the air, very, very cool. -

Cheers. About 30 seconds after I took it I realised that gloves would be a good idea, it was a bit like suddenly noticing you've had your hands in a boiling vat for five minutes.
