  1. Interstingly this effect is called 'sophomore slump' meaning after a decade of listening to it I've only just got the joke in Grandaddy's 'Sophtware Slump'. Time for a nod to their brilliant 2nd album, 'Under the Western Freeway'. They went on to improve in the aforementioned album but got into a bit of a rut after that, lovely but unremarkable albums followed.
  2. I dont dislike Third, it's just I'm never inclined to put it on except occasionally to try and work out why I'm not gelling with it. Any more bands like Massive Attack that just haven't put a foot wrong? (let's say minimum of three albums in the discography). Broken Social Scene, their sophomore 'you forgot it in people' is great, and the eponymous follow up is almost flawless.
  3. Sage nods of agreement on all the above sean, though admittedly that's the only Fatima Mansions I can commment on. Floodland, there's on that needs to get back in my back catalogue, original has gone missing along with the much loved FaLaA and I'm left with the enjoyable rubbish that is Vision Thing.
  4. Yeah, I've given Third a number of listens and just can't get it. I think This Life killed them off forever :-/
  5. One of the best must surely be Cocteau Twins, from dull gothfest Garlands to the frankly spectacular Head Over Heels. And then they got better!
  6. I was thinking the clash too quids. I loved the Charlatans Some Friendly, but it was an of the moment piece and they subsequently became tired has beens, Between 10th and 11th was awful. Four albums and seven years later came th marvellous Tellin' Stories though, showing recovery can happen.
  7. The albums coming this year thread threw up a lot of names who will be doing their second album. Critics always talk about the 'tricky sophomore' album and I can think of quite a few bands that have tripped up on this one. Can we think of bands that did great ones, bands that crumbled and any that recovered from poor ones? I'll kick of with the obvious 'Second Coming' by Stone Roses (to quote sean of the dead, 'well I liked it'). Good ones...The Bends pooed all over Pablo Honey (and let's face it, they were already taking themselves far too seriously). Midlake went from being another psychaedelia/beach boys clone (a la yeasayer) to something special (albeit a prog version of Steely Dan).
  8. I really don't use the apps that much; mostly the browser but at work it's plugged into pc so won't drain. If I use the map function (far and away the most useful app) then I can kiss goodbye to the battery in half an hour. Ok it will last longer as long as I don't use it at all. Bu that rather defeats the purpose. Plus it's an old 3G and I suspect it's always had a dodgy battery.
  9. I know, it gets worse. Mines down to about 6 hours :(. I keep Bluetooth on so the car can automatically detect it when I get in and it's the straw that's breaking the proverbial.
  10. Ooh, Midlake have one imminenet, I'm pretty sure Fight Like Apes will follow up their debut thus year. Expecting good things if their liver performances are anything to go by.
  11. Quids, that's one of my favourites too though I'm pretty sure it was Dean Martin, who also said: "you're not drunk if you can lie in the floor without holding on" Hollywood don't make em like they used to that's for sure!!
  12. Ooh interesting, constructive debate. How nice. I would also add in response to a minor earlier point, that the local brewing industry is a as healhy as it's been in decades. In part as response to the bland lagers and dull bitters that was certanly all I recall in pubs in the 90s and early 00s. In part thanks to the supermarkets if truth be told, though obviously theyre only doing it in response tothe increase in popularity. I know what you mean about the slow death of the local pub, and I have certainly done more than my bit to keep them going. I rcommend hoopers who always have a selection of small brewery beers available.
  13. Absolutely JTT, I thought it a good goal too and a very entertaining cup tie, why I still love the cup even if it seems to losing it's shine (sadly).
  14. Why've you always got to be so negative matthew? I thought Stoke deserved, even if outplayed for large parts they were always in the game and had some nifty runs and good football in there, with acres of space on many am occassion down the left. Wow, as I wrote that peter Reid (not unbiased) just suggested Etheringtom for England (laughable maybe but a kernel of reason in there). As for the suggestion re the quality of the suuport, the camera was unfair, it was fairly well attended in a town a report today described as having been among the hardest hit by the recession in Britain!!
  15. copy them on to your sim, and then copy them off your sim. This is a pain as it means all the home, mobile type info is lost. CAn you sync your nokia with windows contacts, then sync your new iphone with windows contacts (the latter definitely possible)?...bobs yer proverbial if you can.
  16. no schadenfreude, I'm actually happy for Stoke. I have no particular gripe againt Arsenal truth be told. I've been to Highbury a good dozen times with arsenal mates. I do like Stoke though, they've usualy had a torrid time in the top flight, and they're demonstrating good old fashioned values like hard work and gumption and physicality, and atila knocks them at very opportunity. An arsenal fan. I'll allow the irony to speak for itself.
  17. I fear for our club too. I couldn't believe their ridiculous pronouncements and sure as hell the fans won't be fooled. Anyway, back to the match; bugger!!!
  18. It would be wrong of me to gloat what, with the self-confessed Stoke hating one's enforced absence, but* as an ex resident of said town with a soft spot for the team, andone who spent ?150 quid treating an arsenal friend of mine to join me in Watching his team dump us out the cup in the last round... HA Ha Ha, in YER FACE ;-) *everything before the but in a sentence is bullshit.
  19. Ooh. Being interviewed on five live as we speak. Denying getting the job by the sounds of things, though not actually saying as much. He's used the 'g' word though and that's made me laugh.
  20. No, just deluded fool :)
  21. True enough mr deep, but we can always dream, and it's the act of dreaming that matters, not tin trophies. It's rarity that lends value remember.
  22. And sadlyv there won't be much euphemising for a little while meponders.
  23. Funny you should say that MM. I've had several texts suggesting that foisting my team on poor Rory is child cruelty. And they kind of have a point, but ultimately supporting a team like the hammers is good for the soul I reckon.
  24. Oh well thank you missus mockers. "oh come on Mockney, the game is over, hang out the clothes will ya" grumble grumble grrrr
