  1. Brian, see your point - but I can't see getting the work stopped is going to happen, and is a separate point really anyway. Interesting about the increased speeds since the resurfacing.
  2. How about 'In the light of the number and severity of accidents regularly happening on Forest Hill Road, we call for a thorough investigation of traffic levels and dangers on Forest Hill Road, London SE22, followed by appropriate traffic-calming measures for the safety of road users and local residents alike'?
  3. Right, I've had enough of this preposterous lack of action on Forest Hill Road. Those screen shots are damning. Am emailing all my councillors and MP again now. Should we/could we get a petition up? Seems futile given what's happened on Scutari. Just WTF is going on here? Who sanctions this spending in the face of the clear consensus of the people living and using the roads? GRRRRRR.
  4. To my knowledge (via some excellent local history books I bought at Chener on L Lane) D K Hill is so called because it used to be covered in, er, dog kennels. They were for Hoorays who would come out from town to what was then the country and hire hounds to attempt to polish off some wildlife. It's also why, I presume, the blocks in the LCC-built East Dulwich Estate are named after hunts - Quorn etc.
  5. Oh yeah, it looking cool is what I'm after. Not working out which plane woke me up again this morning.
  6. Actually the first thing they need is something to transit. Then they need roads. Then, eventually, they need more sophisticated forms of public transport than rickshaws/tuk tuks/buses. That's a long way down the road, pun intended. And even then it's striking that transport is merely an enabler, not a creator, of success. East Croydon has amazing public transport. Doesn't stop it being pretty grim, but does help it function.
  7. Aha. Interesting, thanks. Obviously there's no ulterior motive for them choosing 7am as the start time...
  8. Always interests me that the webtrak site (http://webtrak.bksv.com/lhr) only starts its playback from 7am, implying that's when the flights start... randombloke, you'll find LBA's flightpath a lot noisier now! I don't think it's enough to say everywhere in the SE is noisy because of planes - big chunks of it aren't. And I just don't see that the pollution of so many millions of people's lives by dragging vast numbers of big planes over a city the size of London with only 5 hours off in each 24 hour period is sustainable in the end. Hope I'm right.
  9. yeah even I would put other stuff ahead of transport. But individual MPs rarely make a difference on these things (although I can think of exceptions). And forget it if you're looking to S Council for anything on transport. The contrast with neighbouring boroughs like Lewisham and Lambeth is stark.
  10. Forget Whitechapel to Paddington at the moment, and the bus - achingly slow. The point is trying to uncover potentially useful connections at C Junction. I struggle with this too. Worth remembering there are trains from HOP/FH to C Junction at the moment, which are sometimes useful when coming in from Dorset or Surrey etc. Once the H and C upgrade (3 years to go or so I think) is done Whitechapel will be a goer for connections to town, although Paddington will still be too far away. Once Crossrail's in the game will change again of course, but that's not until 2019. 11. I too complained about the speeds reached on this particular stretch and was told something would be done. We're still waiting. The problem is obvious - especially heading northbound and so downhill, once you've cleared the speed humps at the top of the road and if there are no pedestrians by The Rose pub/Mundania Road you then have a clear run all the way to or even through the lights just before the Park before jamming on the brakes for the speed camera by the Park (if you think it's working). So you've got a racetrack stretch between traffic calming measures. The speeds I used to see reached regularly (I mean at least seen twice a week, and I'm not talking about the small hours either) were insane - easily over 50mph straight past people's homes, the pub, bus stops, pedestrian crossings, the nursery etc. etc. I no longer live in Honor Oak but surely the local councillors must try to do something?
  12. From what people in the Court have told me, the police are aware, statements were given at the time.
  13. From what fellow neighbours have told me, the police are aware, statements were given at the time.
  14. Crikey, this is worse than I'd thought. And 46 a month! I'm only paying just over 30 (admittedly with some healthcare provider deal) for Virgin Active.
  15. For me the proposals are one third overkill, on third welcome and one third missed opportunity. The missed bit is the speed control - some shrubs aren't going to be enough. The stretch that sees crazy speeds is from beyond the junction with Wood Vale northbound or beyond the junction with Colyton Road northbound because it has no traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, speed cameras or speed humps.
  16. I'd encourage everyone who wants to reform the scrap metal trade to have a look at this e-petition - and better still to sign it! E-petition for a cashless scrap metal trade
  17. LL, with respect, this is a load of cobblers. Sure, tackling the junctions at E and C is not for everyone. But there are gyratories in both directions, taking you around small roads so that you don't have to use the main junctions. It's also cobblers to say it's only for the seriously fit. I'm not seriously fit and I manage Forest Hill Road to Regent's Park in 40 minutes day in, day out. 45 if I'm feeling lazy, 30-35 if I put on those 'ferocious' bursts of speed you're mentioning. languagelounger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > 25 mins by bike is great, for those that can do > it, am very glad very you. 18. Inspired, I tried doing this this very morning. Worked a treat. Made me remember the palmy days of trains from Honor Oak Park to Charing X direct - ended in 2009 I think. 19. Or train to Victoria from P Rye and then District/Circle eastbound
  20. I was at a conference a few months ago where the announcer endeared herself to everyone by introducing herself as "The bing bong lady".
  21. Whoever owns the yellow and blue place I do wish they'd let someone run a business from it, as I'm sure the right thing would do well - as it is it's just an eyesore. I'm a big fan of Si M as a good local Italian resto. The Herne - never had the food, love the decor, the garden's not up to much, the beer's far too pricey.

  23. This route makes intuitive sense to me; really useful post. wongo Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I drive to Nottingham fairly often and my > preferred route to the M1 (from Sydenham Hill) is > as follows: > > South Croxted/Croxted > Rd/HerneHill/Brixton/Stockwell/Vauxhall Bridge > Rd/Victoria (follow the diversion sign here as > Wilton Rd by Victoria Stn and the Apollo Theatre > is closed to private vehicles ? a ?120 fine is you > go through) then Grosvenor Place/Park Lane/Edgware > Road but just before Maida Vale at the traffic > lights turn right turn into St Johns Wood Rd and > come out at the A41 roundabout. 24. Yes I wonder that about frequency. Presumably the buses would be reassigned to other London routes? Too much bother to repaint etc and send somewhere else?
