They have as much right to be there as us.

Yep. Same up Sydenham Hill. It's the tailgating I find really intimidating. DbBoy, what do you mean? It's perfectly possible to travel at 20mph. That's a different issue to whether that's a reasonable speed limit on particular roads, which I would agree in some cases it isn't.
  3. It isn't a council park, is it? That's probably why?
  4. Renata Hamvas Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Council officers So I'm sorry to be thick, but how often is a council officer likely to be around when a driver is parked with his (or her, but it usually seems to be his) engine running?

  6. What it says! ETA: To those mystified by the heading, see here: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1882203
  7. My street is quiet! The builders have gone from the roof opposite! The people repairing the water pipes in the road a few houses down have gone! The shouting and swearing has stopped! The road is not blocked by gigantic lorries! I don't have to have my Pzizz app on Focus to try and concentrate on what I'm doing! I'm so happy :))
  8. Still nothing on Facebook or Twitter that I can see, but I guess they have more important things to do at the moment :)

Flu generally makes you extremely ill and bedridden and totally incapable of doing anything. It's not what I call a cold, either, although it has some of the same symptoms and yes, probably they are both viruses. What I call a cold starts with a sore throat, progresses to a runny nose, you feel a bit shit for a day or so if it's a bad cold, if you're unlucky you get a cough, but it's over in a relatively short time. It doesn't involve very sore eyes (oh and very dry lips are another of my symptoms), and it doesn't keep coming and going. As regards antibiotics, my daughter was on the verge of being admitted to hospital on Friday night because she self-diagnosed her chest infection as a virus and insisted that antibiotics would not work. When she eventually phoned 111 for advice, she was told to go to the emergency GP, who told her that her heart rate was high, which was a sign that the infection was going out of control, and put her on antibiotics immediately. She was told to come back a few hours later and that if the situation hadn't improved she would have to be admitted. At 10pm she was told that luckily (and to my astonishment because she had only taken one dose) the antibiotics had kicked in and she hasn't had to be admitted. My point in all this is not for a minute to suggest that everybody should rush off to their GP at the first sign of illness, but to suggest that to self-diagnose yourself with a virus and assume that therefore it cannot be treated is not a great idea if you are clearly rather ill :)

  11. Top as in .... ??? Past the library end?
  12. Rats are very intelligent.
  13. Renata, when you say "refuse to switch off their engines when asked", do you mean asked by any member of the public, or asked by a Southwark official of some kind?
  14. That's terrible :(
  15. OMG I'm just reading Guardian Weekend and the Tim Dowling column headline includes "total eclipse of the heart". How weird is that?
  16. :)) I love that song!

Nah it's nowhere near as bad as to need to see a doctor! No way to treat a virus anyway, you just have to rest.
  18. The last reincarnation of the Flying Pig was a disaster (ETA: In my opinion). Sorry, but it just didn't deserve to succeed. We spent many happy times in there in the past on the sofa playing Scrabble, but something went very very wrong. Last time we were there, the bar had cleaning stuff just lying around in full sight. I suppose at least that meant they were cleaning it :))

Damn. Not what I wanted to hear, but thanks!

  21. I have just come across a letter from TfL which I imagine everybody round here got, which starts "Dear resident, We are seeking your views on the Mayor's plan to cut dangerous air pollution in your area by expanding the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)." Further information here: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone?cid=ultra-low-emission-zone There is an online questionnaire to air (no pun intended) your views, but frankly once I started reading it all my head was spinning (and not from exhaust fumes .....)
  22. I do read the Guardian online (and the paper version on Saturdays) but I don't remember seeing that particular article. I'll have a look for it, thanks moondancer.
  23. I know there's a lot of stuff going around, and huge commiserations if you have or have had flu. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a relatively minor virus (I presume) with symptoms of sore eyes, muzzy head, on and off sore throat, on and off runny nose, on and off aches, occasional dry cough, feeling very sleepy and a day or so wiped out in bed? I ask because I thought mine had gone away, and now it's come back again :( I'm wondering how long it's likely to go on for, because my energy levels are really low and I'm finding it hard to get much done.
  24. The other night, quite late, I opened the window because the sky looked a strange colour and I wanted a closer look. The smell of pollution was absolutely dreadful. It seems to me that the situation in London is almost as bad now as some places I went years ago when I was travelling, when some groups of tourists were wearing masks to cover their noses and mouths, for example the outskirts of Kathmandu. ETA: I have asthma, and I am seriously considering whether I want to continue living in London.
  25. That's very intimidating.
