Thanks DuncanW, I have SkyMap on my phone. However I have recently discovered that my current mobile doesn't have a compass (magnetometer?) so I'm not sure whether SkyView will work. In fact, I've just looked it up and got a message "Your device isn't compatible with this version". GRRRRR. Thanks anyway. I'll try your suggestion re East Dulwich Road. On a clear night. It was really clear on Sunday night, I was amazed. I couldn't remember seeing so many stars/planets from London since I was a kid. Still couldn't see Mars though, from where I was looking :(
  2. Do you already have some suggested places?

I was saddened and perturbed by the number of people who just passed him by though. He could have been ill or hurt. His eyes were closed when I stopped. In fact I had to walk down to the next bus stop, because I couldn't bear to watch. There was no way that the passers by could have failed to notice him lying there.

Just because a situation is worse somewhere else does not mean that it is not bad here.
  5. Minitoots, have you seen this? The printed article was in the Observer on Sunday, but this is the online version: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/aug/05/daughter-eczema-dr-aron

I think it's highly unlikely that the Wildlife Centre would want houseplants, which are not normally native to this country. SamWolf, are you wanting advice on how to physically move these plants to your new home, or are you intending to leave them behind and want advice on what to do with them? If you want to take them with you, what country are you moving to? I believe some places don't allow the importation of plant material. If you want to leave them behind, houseplants are a massive trend at the moment, so depending on what they are, you could probably sell them on this forum for enormous amounts of money :))
  7. Thanks very much, that's very helpful!
  8. That's very useful, thank you. I do think it might be better to do it on the way back, then if there are any snags it wouldn't eat into the time at the Palace. Also if push came to shove we could do a river trip another day. How long do you reckon you need to allow at the Palace? The older granddaughter is very into the Tudors, but I think they would both also enjoy the Magic Garden, and obviously the Maze! ETA: Of course this is all a bit weather dependent ......
  9. Thanks I'll investigate!
  10. My brother and his partner had a naming ceremony in East Dulwich for their twins. The person doing it pronounced the (Irish) name of one of them wrong. All the way through. Can't help with the cost question - I'm just posting to say it may seem obvious but if the child has an unusual (in this country) name or even if they don't, make sure the person has been properly briefed! And repeats the name/s back to you before the ceremony!
  11. It's grandchildren Summer stay time again soon, hooray! They are now eleven and nine (gulp). We are planning to go to Hampton Court on one of the days, and hoping to get a river boat all or part of the way there or back. The boats don't seem to be that frequent, and it doesn't appear that you can book in advance online. I'm concerned we might queue up and then not get on, or not get a decent seat. Also I think the trip can take several hours?! Given the cost of getting into Hampton Court, I'd obviously like us to have a decent length of time there so we can do everything. Has anyone done this and can give us any tips?

I realise it's not now at its closest, but I still want to see it. Can anybody suggest a good viewing spot and time, assuming there's a clear sky? I can't see it from either the front or back of my house. Somewhere that's not scary for me to go by myself at night, ie on a street not the top of One Tree Hill :)
  13. Glad it's sorted, RMH!
  14. Around 7.30 tonight there was a man lying on the ground outside the old Plough DIY shop, with a lit scented candle and what appeared to be a pile of books. He wasn't begging. I asked him if he was alright and he said he was. Just wondering if anyone knows him as it seemed quite odd, but I didn't want to pry as he evidently didn't need help.
  15. There were two men sitting in the Grove site last night, again with the Dog Unit car. Are they security guards? They don't seem to do much Rubbish from that site is blowing all over the South Circular now. It's terrible. Isn't anybody going to remove it?
  16. Minitoots, I posted this on your other thread, but the foods you are allergic to may be specific to you (though of course no harm in avoiding certain things to see if that helps!). https://www.burghwoodclinic.co.uk/ ETA: Eczema is specifically mentioned on their website. I was treated here in the past (not for eczema) and they are very thorough and helpful. It is not "alternative". To the best of my knowledge all the staff are medically qualified.
  17. Every time I pass there is a car in there with "Dog Unit" written on it. The first time, there were also two men and an Alsatian. The other times, no dog that I could see. Can anybody shed any light?
  18. Yes I realised this morning about having to recentre the shower. That might make the whole thing impractical. The shower curtain is pleated and folds up into a vertical container screwed to the wall and could easily be moved.

On the one hand, I totally agree with your sentiments. On the other hand, surely that wouldn't otherwise be "an empty shop"? It's in a prime position on Lordship Lane. If the landlord was to charge ?30k pa less because it was a charity shop, but could get ?30k more by renting it to somebody else, then effectively s/he is donating ?30k pa to the charity. I'm no capitalist, but I can see the landlord's point of view here.

  22. Citizens Advice Bureau. I'm wondering why your boyfriend would not meet his boss face to face to discuss things? Couldn't that have sorted out the situation much quicker and earlier without going through all this? ETA: Is there some past history between your boyfriend and his boss which could explain this bad feeling? As on the face of it, all this trauma over payment for a couple of shifts seems absurd, and I'm wondering why the employer didn't just pay up, if he's admitted he made a mistake.

But sadly, it now seems to have become a lot less affordable for those who need for financial reasons to buy their clothes in charity shops :( Which the Mind shop already was, compared to the hospice shop. I know this has been discussed on here before, probably more than once, but it seems (and I'm not saying this is wrong) that the charity's priority is to raise funds for its own work rather than to provide affordable items for people who couldn't otherwise buy them. I do wonder whether with a rent rise of ?30,000 pa the shop wouldn't do better to look for a cheaper site? Is it that it gets better quality donations in East Dulwich and that's why it stays here? Because I don't know what its turnover/profit is, but ?30k seems to me to be a massive additional amount of money to have to raise each year.

Yes the foundations of the bay are different. That's why only the bay is affected, presumably.
