Always seemed to have a weird sort of atmosphere, that pharmacy.

Londis is becoming Costa?? That's very bad news :(

Delivered, on each occasion. If we were going to pick it up, we might as well eat in the restaurant!!

Maybe either the neighbours could be persuaded to come in and listen to their TV (or whatever) from the other side of the wall, or alternatively the person finding it noisy could ask to come in and hear what volume it is from the neighbours' side? It's all a bit subjective otherwise. As is what is an acceptable level, though. I presume Southwark Noise Control could advise on that, though I don't know how they measure it. ETA: With the room layout in smaller houses, it may be very difficult to find a place for either the television or speakers which isn't against a neighbour's wall, which obviously adds to the problem.
  9. Memsaab are great for eat in meals, but the takeaways we have had from them have been so very not good we shan't use them again. No idea why this should be.
  10. I think some people who complain about noise are unaware that their "noisy" neighbours can hear them only too clearly as well. If you choose to live in a house or flat with walls adjoining someone else's, it is often going to be an issue. If the noise is extremely loud and regular, then hopefully a polite word in person should help, as presumably (most) people do not go out of their way to annoy their neighbours. Reacting in a less polite way is likely to make relations worse. If it's the occasional one off noisy incident, then live and let live, no? But as Ilona M says above, in old houses sound travels in very weird ways.
  11. James, I had a speedy response to my contact to Southwark online via the form, and they emailed me a few days later to check that I was happy with the outcome. It didn't seem to me that the system wasn't working. Councils are hard pressed for funding, I thought, and taking phone calls is time consuming and prone to mistakes being made in recording the details of the issue. It is also very frustrating if nobody answers, or you keep getting voicemail and nobody calls back. At least with the present system you get immediate acknowledgment of your issue and, if memory serves, a reference number. I agree the present system is not ideal for those without access to a computer or without relevant knowledge, but there are libraries with computers and helpful staff. I am ancient and manage to cope :)) And I'm not sure what is the difference between an online form and an email. I have an online form on a website and the messages from it come to me as an email to my normal email address. BTW if I misread Hammerman's post then Hammerman, I apologise. I took it to mean that I hadn't contacted the council at all.

It seems to me they are doing all they could do in advance to make the work go smoothly for us and them.

I've got no problem with killing a pig in those circumstances. The main diet of the Mentawai people was sago, supplemented with the occasional small fish. I'm sure they welcomed a change. If memory serves, they used to eat monkeys, but there were none left on the island as their predecessors (is that the right word?) had killed them all :( I have a bit of a problem with eating pork from a pig who has been eating human shit. And it would have been considered extremely rude not to. It was considered a feast. So I did. ETA: And no, I am neither vegan nor vegetarian, and I wasn't in those days either. I won't knowingly eat factory farmed meat or other animal products, though. ETA: Come to think of it, there were a lot of chickens about the hut, so they must have had eggs. And the occasional chicken.

Maybe she could post it again on this thread :))
  17. I think they should all be issued with those electronic tag things, so we can all keep abreast of where each goose is at all times :))

  19. malumbu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I was ill camping in Lombok and threw up outside > the tent. I watched a rodent eat it later. > Precious. My parents used to have a dog which would be sick, then eat the sick, then be sick again, and so on and so on. Ad nauseam. Literally. Often whilst we were eating :( Though possibly that wasn't as bad as when I was travelling many moons ago and stayed with the the Mentawai people in Siberut (island off Sumatra) who kept pigs. The pigs used to eat the shit which fell beneath the hut (on stilts) from a toilet hole, and the people then ate the pigs. Unluckily for us, one was slaughtered and eaten whilst we were there :(
  20. Oh well, if you don't think your post saying "Great! Something that a simple phone call or email by Sue to Southwark could have been (sic) sorted out" was having a go, then fine. Personally I think that was unnecessary even if it had been accurate, which it wasn't, given that I had clearly stated that I had contacted Southwark. And you had previously described another post of mine as "a long rant". But perhaps I have misinterpreted your posts and they were both really polite and lovely and sweet and full of the joys of Spring :)) Have a great day!

  22. Mostly on a Saturday they seem to block up the entrance to Londis. I reckon it's the same people who spend the whole of their bus journeys standing in front of the doors, even when there are many seats available, so that everybody else has to push past them to get out.

When you have a quote from Direct Line, (and maybe other quotes), you can always go back to your present insurance company and try to get them to match it. I've had limited success with that, in that they've brought their original quote down a bit, but not much. Last time, the difference in the premiums was so big that I switched, though.

    Okay, who is this?

She ?followed a labourer from the address making money signs at him?, the notice stated. Can anybody tell me what "money signs" are? Is this some code for V signs? :)) Mr Holtgreve also called Southwark council?s noise and anti-social team eight times alleging Mrs Highland was playing loud music. In view of her name, could this have been bagpipe music? In which case, I feel for poor Mr Holtgreve even more :))

I always check it out first for anything financial. Obviously a lot is common sense, but it's good to be reminded of common sense things as well :)
