  1. I have just called Thames Water to find out when the work originally scheduled for 22 and 28 February in Ulverscroft Road is likely now to be done. They said that so far as they can see, with everything else that has been going on (obviously there have been more pressing things for them to address over the past week with the snow etc) the work in Ulverscroft Road has not yet been rescheduled. They can't presently see anything "on the system", however they are going to call me back within 24 hours to update me on the situation. The poor woman I spoke to (who was very helpful but had to get the actual info from another department) had been called in from the billing department to help on the phone lines, which indicates the amount of calls they are getting at the moment. I felt a bit bad for adding to them, but having had large pots of water sitting about my kitchen for over a week, being gradually used up and then refilled, I'd quite like to know when I'm actually going to possibly need them, grammar :)

Just having a break from looking at potential new broadband providers, btw, because I have so much time on my hands :)) :)) :)) ETA: Oh, and those regulars said quite clearly why they were leaving, so I'm not quite sure why you use the words "unfairly blamed" :))
  3. Don Simpson, local mobile mechanic, is brilliant. Thorough, honest and reasonably priced. 020 8299 7387
  4. Personally I'm more interested in the content of what people post than their number of posts. Helpful posts giving useful information - good. Items for sale or wanted - good. Genuine recommendations for tradespeople - good on the whole, probably more good than bad Opinions based on demonstrable facts - good. Personal experiences when they are relevant to the thread topic - good mostly Vindictive personal attacks - bad Deliberate trolling to get a response - bad Lying - bad None of the other forums I post on have any of the last three categories, to the best of my knowledge, however heated the discussions become. ETA: A considerable number of people who had been regular posters on here for years left because of ridiculous posts on here that it was impossible to respond to because of the totally illogical reasoning. The wading through treacle posts 😀 Sometimes hard to tell whether the illogical reasoning is deliberate but quite subtle trolling, or whether the posters concerned really do think (I use the term loosely) like that 😀

I understood a well known footballer (Rio Ferdinand? I don't know footballers' names!) was trying to buy the land, and has already offered ten million pounds, but Meadow are not responding to his attempts to contact them. And to be fair it seems to me that the council are being very supportive and doing their best to help.
  6. Surely the whole point of contactless payments is that they are for small transactions?

I was making a general point. What point are you making? Of course I have time in my day. I am retired. I no longer work very long hours plus commuting across London. I am actually usually very busy, including booking, promoting and running music gigs and growing flowers and vegetables, and in gaps in between being very busy I post on this forum and also on Facebook. I hope that's OK with you :)) Are you trying to start an argument now? :) :)) :)) ETA: And if "the figures do not lie", perhaps you could give a yearly (or monthly) breakdown of posts, as suggested by both myself and The Cat above. Not that it matters anyway. So what if some people post on here more than others? It's a bloody forum, that's what it's here for :)) :)) :)) In fact I have just posted this as a bit of light relief from slogging through a tedious spreadsheet .......

Perhaps you could also post up the date these people joined the forum. Also, some people retain the same user name, others change theirs, in some cases quite frequently. So you would have to add all their posts together, under their different names. But nice try :)) ETA: An average number of posts per year would be a better comparison. It would also be instructive to break the posts down into what forum sections they were posted in. And as for better forums than the EDF for a good argument, there's been quite a recent ding-dong on a no-dig allotment group on Facebook, as to whether the use of glyphosate (a systemic weedkiller) to clear a plot of couch grass on a one-off basis prior to planting is compatible with the no-dig philosophy :))

DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > I realise it would be simpler in my current > situation but at ?1.05 a day, I'm happy. > Dulwich Fox, it takes a very short time to instal the meter, it is free in your current situation, and you would probably halve your water bills. It may not sound much a day, but it mounts up over a year and beyond. I am saving a thousand pounds over five years. If that makes no difference to you, then lucky you! It's making a lot of difference to me.

AllyCat Wrote: - > > I've also bought a few products form this great > website - https://andkeep.com - plastic free > cotton buds (which come in a cute paper box) and > some Beeswax wraps, which are brilliant... Thank you for that, I wasn't aware of that website. Does anybody know of a non-plastic substitute for freezer storage? I wash and re-use bags and containers as much as I can, but I'd prefer some other method.
  12. Calsug Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Just did the online calculator that Sue suggested, > seems we are paying about double the amount we > should! I will only charge you a small consultancy fee :)) :)) :)) ETA: The actual installation of my meter all went very smoothly with good communication, and as it is outside the house on the pavement, there was very little disruption. And an added advantage is that I no longer have to go down in my coalhole to reach the stopcock, as the water is now turned off (if necessary) outside at the meter. So I have been able to put a chest freezer over the trap door (under the stairs) to the coalhole, in the knowledge that it's unlikely I will have to move it to get down there. Win-Win :)
  13. Calsug, that sounds a lot to me. There is an online calculator you can fill in to assess whether you would be better off with a meter. I found Thames Water very helpful. There was no pressure (no pun intended :) )
  14. Yes, thanks Robin, you're right. I will. Definitely better to be on the safe side, even though I haven't heard the noises since.
  15. anonymous_third_part Wrote: > Less staff fraud, less chance of getting robbed > and less chance of getting your books wrong - it > makes no sense whatsoever to not want to accept > all card payments - unless you are trying to dodge > paying taxes I used to use one particular shop round here and noticed that they put transactions through the till if I paid by card, but never if I paid by cash. Whether fraud or tax evasion or some other reason I have no idea, but I stopped going there. I almost always pay by card, especially now it's so easy with contactless payments. But I keep a tenner and a fiver in with my Freedom Pass, just in case. I don't blame shops for not wanting to be out of pocket for card payments, but on the other hand I don't want to spend more unnecessarily either.
  16. I was out most of the day, and when I got back quite late in the evening the meter seemed fine. It's been fine since. Very odd. I have just double checked that it is actually calculating usage (which it is) and I checked the date it was replaced, which was 2006. No idea whether that is old for a meter! If it happens again I may phone the gas people but otherwise I'll just leave it. As it's never happened before, I did think it might be something to do with the cold weather and the supply running down, but it seems not. Thanks for asking though!
  17. We saw a solitary redwing in Peckham Rye Park on Saturday around midday. Apparently it's quite unusual to just see one by itself :( Don't know where its mates were!
  18. My gas meter (or a pipe near it) has been making strange loud whirring/bubbling noises this morning - not continuously, just on and off. The boiler seems to be working as normal. I know there was some publicity about gas supplies running down, but I thought this was predicted only to affect commercial rather than residential use. I don't want to phone the gas company unnecessarily. Has anybody else had this?

    Okay, who is this?

And not all the posts which started this off have been removed.

    Okay, who is this?

  21. Snowing in my road as I type ..... :))
  22. Would not explain activity up Cox's Walk, unless they were parking there to avoid blocking the road?
  23. Oh I'm so jealous! My favourite birds!
  24. Yep. If they don't respond on Twitter, many people see that. If they don't answer the phone (but to be fair, they must be inundated with calls at the moment plus possibly staff haven't been able to get to work) only the caller knows. Plus possibly whoever runs Twitter could work from home if necessary.
  25. The emergency number I have for Thames Water is 0845 9200 800 But I imagine they are pretty busy today. Don't know if you could try Twitter?
