Where to watch fireworks with a 2 year old
Sue replied to Janibarr's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
So where did you go in the end, and did your son enjoy the fireworks? Hope so :) -

Give him a break, for once :) Season of goodwill and all that :) Or else stand as a councillor yourself and see how you get on :)) ETA: It wasn't James Barber who started this thread.

Great walks in countryside near East Dulwich
Sue replied to amac's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
These walks will now be full of people from East Dulwich :)) ETA: Including me :)) -
Perhaps people who want no noise at all, ever, after their children's bedtime should move to some more isolated place than Inner London near a football ground? But then of course there are likely to be owls, and the sounds of screaming small animals being carried off/eaten by the owls. Every night, not twice a month. What is DHFC to do, conduct every evening match in complete silence? Anyway, as someone said above, sleepy children will sleep, and once asleep noise will not (in my experience) wake them up. Nightmares might, or illness, but not external noise. And I still don't understand, if noise is such an issue for him (her?), why the OP sees double glazing as a "red herring"? "The greatest good for the greatest number" springs to mind here, from a community point of view.

There are quite a few books with titles like "Country walks near London" and "Walks in the Country Near London", plus there are also walks within London which are almost like being in the country, eg along the Thames between Richmond and Kew. Also Sydenham Hill Woods, just up the road, though they're getting quite crowded these days :) -

You don't see them on sale much any more. Frozen was a fad (it's a Disney movie which was much loved by kids around the age of 6. Now it's not cool ( :)) ) any more Franco Manca is not a fad. It's a very good pizza restaurant which I'm sure will still be around in several years' time. fad fad/ noun noun: fad; plural noun: fads an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived; a craze.

beagle1 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Double glazing is a red herring! Why is that? I installed double glazing in my bedroom because intermittent (but frequent) noise from outside (not planes) was disturbing my sleep every night and in the morning. Seems like a good solution to me if this apparent noise twice a month is causing such distress?

Franco Manca has been crowded whenever I've been in lately, too. Fox, people rave about a good new place when it's new. Once it's settled down, they still (probably) continue to go to it, they just don't see the need to keep on telling people how good it is, as by then most people already know ...... That doesn't make it a "fad" !!! :) It's not like loom bands or Frozen :))

Burglary on Upland Road (Dec 4th 2015)
Sue replied to 22fdunst's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
rabbitears Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > He said he was in the house at the time. Fair enough, but he (she?) also said "We only used a basic Yale lock." Maybe I misunderstood, as s/he also said that following a burglary they now have deadlocks. I keep both my doors locked on the mortice locks when I'm in the house, though I accept that probably the insurance company doesn't require that. BTW was there a burglary in Ulverscroft Road earlier today? There were a lot of police about around eleven this morning :( -

MCMC Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > We only used a basic Yale lock. I'm very sorry you were burgled, but doesn't your insurance company require a five-lever mortice lock (ie locked with a key) on all outside doors? I was concerned I wasn't sufficiently protected, and spoke to the locksmiths up the road (when they were based on Lordship Lane) and they told me that the mortice lock was fine and I didn't need anything fancier. Which I thought was extremely honest of them. ETA: Obviously that doesn't stop burglars getting in some other way. Though in my case they'd find nothing much to take unless they want a nine year old laptop :)) -
I think if somebody is trying to describe someone they have seen, for example (on this forum just before Christmas) somebody who was hitting a child, it's about doing their best to word that description in a way which most (?) people will relate to - and most importantly, in a way which may enable somebody to be able to identify that person. Whilst I completely understand what bodsier is saying, and it's good in most circumstances to try to be as accurate as possible and to take sensitivities into account, sometimes time is of the essence. And that may mean that somebody is offended by the description used. I think it's very difficult, but unless there's a deliberate intention to offend, sometimes it might be better just to let it be? As a white woman, I realise that it's easy for me to say that, however.

It's only wrong if you order a takeaway for two and pretend there's someone else there :)) I've only done it once so that doesn't count as a secret vice - does it? :))

HELP! Christmas Shopping fell off back of my motorbike! UPDATE!

ozzy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Isnt it great that there are still some good > people around I think most people are nice and will do the right thing, even if it involves taking a bit of time. It's just that we tend to hear about the ones who aren't nice and don't do the right thing. And sometimes it's not that people are bad, it's that they are shy or in a hurry or don't want to interfere ... Anyway, what a heartwarming start to Christmas with a story like the above :) -

Surely if mail deliveries in part of Lordship Lane have been suspended, Royal Mail should have informed the people who aren't getting their mail and advised them to go and collect it??!

I had one instance where I narrowly missed getting an item I really wanted - I had been the second person to reply. I was then contacted by the seller to say that the people who had bought the item had changed their minds when they got it home, as it was too big for their flat. However, they had agreed that I could buy it from them at the price they had paid for it. I was obviously delighted, and even more so when I texted them and they offered to deliver it (it would never have occurred to me not to collect it myself)! We agreed a mutually convenient time the next day. However the following morning, I received a text to say they didn't want this item in their flat (for a few hours!!!!) so they had given it to a friend !!!!! Had I known, I could have collected it myself as I had assumed I would have to in the first place. Some people have very odd ways of going about things, to say the least.

I've occasionally had this problem in the past, and now I always ask for a contact number if somebody is coming to pick something up. Apart from being able to phone them if they don't turn up, it means if I have to go out urgently and unexpectedly I can contact them to rearrange a collection time.
