I did auto top-up in the days before my freedom pass. It was very easy and meant I never had to worry at all about the Oyster card running out. But I agree if you are travelling beyond the Oyster zone you do still need to use a ticket office, at least until such time as they change the system - I don't think you can get the add-on ticket at a machine, can you?

There were builders apparently working in there last week when I passed, but I've no idea what they were doing, if anything.

It was someone else further up the thread. Maybe a slip of the finger and they meant bacterial infection. ETA: Louisa, glad things are being taken seriously by the doctors. Do hope it all gets resolved soon.

  7. Two CD reviews from this month's fRoots: 1. "Its self-composed tunes are about as memorable as the last day it didn't rain and are played with all the nous of a brain-dead sheep." 2. "Horribly-toned accordeon with plodding bass notes and frenzied uilleann pipes conspire to murder Irish traditional music with the assistance of a homicidal cittern player. Truly, truly awful." :)) :)) :))
  8. Spinach in the dishwasher :( Why does it always get over EVERYTHING???

    Stomach bug

Other things could cause these symptoms other than a stomach bug. Antibiotics won't cure a viral infection, as suggested above, but I expect you know that. As it's now been going on so long, I'd be inclined - as someone else said - to insist that you get referred to an appropriate specialist. You may need scans etc.. My daughter's illness last year started with similar symptoms and she ended up being quite unnecessarily very ill indeed because she wasn't diagnosed for months. Whatever it is, you need a speedy diagnosis so that you can get appropriate treatment. I do hope you feel better soon. Take care.
  10. No problem at all James, and I certainly wasn't criticising - hope it didn't come across like that. I greatly appreciate all you do for East Dulwich, and I wouldn't normally have chased after such a short time, just that it was time-critical. Have got your response now, for which thanks.

  12. Bumping as I see you just posted on another thread :)
  13. The Patient Participation Group at DMC has just emailed round a three-part survey, which apparently is also available in paper form at the surgery. Unfortunately it contains several questions which are impossible to fill in accurately - I'm guessing it was compiled by somebody unfamiliar with surveys. For example, the question "What is the longest you have had to wait in the surgery after your appointment time?" only gives you the option to put in a whole number of hours - meaning that anything less than an hour cannot be given. You can't even put in 0.5 hours, because that isn't a whole number. And you can't answer "varies" to questions such as "How many times do you usually telephone before getting through to the surgery?" Another question assumes that you have not been able to get an appointment within two days, even if you have. You have to answer the question, and you can't submit the survey without answering it ...... So unfortunately, I'm not sure that all the information they will collect is going to be accurate, and is therefore not going to be useful :( A pity, because a survey was an excellent idea to collect some statistical information about the apparent problem areas.

  15. Hi James, I emailed you this morning. Just wondering if you picked up the email? Apologies for posting on here, but you're normally very prompt at answering emails and this one is about something time-critical, thanks!

I didn't find Lordship Lane "dire and depressing" at all! When was Northcross Road "wall to wall hairdressers"? If memory serves, there was a butcher, a cobbler, a newsagent, a Greek deli, a greengrocer (still there), amongst other things. To the best of my recollection there was a barber (still there) and one hairdresser. What were the other hairdressers? I agree the opening of the Blue Mountain was the start of the gentrification of ED :(

  21. Slightly different, but there are also a few community gardens around which are open to the public, eg the Physic Garden at the front of Dulwich Hospital, which has a selection of herbs and other medicinal plants, with information about them. Good for bees, I imagine.
  22. Not local, but Neal's Yard Apothecary have excellent electric oil diffusers. The reservoir lasts for some time (you put in water and a few drops of oil), and when it runs out the diffuser turns itself off. You can also have either changing colours, a static colour of your choice, or no colour at all. I've got the Zenbow one, but they do other shapes. http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/essential-oil-burners They are not cheap, but I've found them much much better than the tealight ones, which only have a small reservoir and when that runs down, the burner itself can crack so I was constantly replacing them. The electric ones are also safer as there are no naked flames. I don't know where the nearest branch is, but there's still the original one in Neal's Yard, Covent Garden, or if you have time they do them mail order. ETA: I absolutely love mine - I usually burn lavender oil, but at Christmas have Christmassy scents :)

That was how I read it, anyway.
  24. We have been on a Dawn Chorus walk in Horniman Gardens this morning (starting at 5am!!!!) It was led by a very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and - importantly - audible guy from a company with the excellent name of Bird Brain :) Many birds are already nesting and some already have young. We heard - and in theory are now able to identify the songs of - blackbird, robin, blue tit, great tit, goldcrest, wren, nuthatch, song thrush, dunnock, wood pigeon, green woodpecker, one of the spotted woodpeckers but can't remember which, redwing (I think), magpie, parakeet, crow. Well obviously we already knew some of them ..... Well worth making the effort to drag ourselves out of bed and going out into the freezing cold dawn, though we did have to go back to bed after we'd had breakfast :) Apparently there are at least thirty types of bird at various times in the gardens, probably more. Didn't hear any house sparrows but came back to see several in my garden :)
  25. We have just been on a Dawn Chorus Walk in the Horniman Gardens this very morning (had to get up at 4am as the walk started at 5am, but it was well worth it!) Was about to post on the nature thread about it when I saw this thread. Now off to post on that thread! ETA: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,246908,1290701,page=54#msg-1290701
