Chimney Breasts- waste of space or beautiful feature
Sue replied to motorbird83's topic in The Lounge
Chimney breasts are useful to put shelves at one side of? Or both sides, possibly? Shelves could be useful in a dining room? If you aren't wanting to do that, and you'd have more space without it, why not take it out - you could have a picture, or a mirror, as a focal point in the room? Or if you're concerned about the effect on a future sale, why not ask the advice of an estate agent before you decide? ETA: Is it the chimney breast itself, or removing the fireplace? I realise I may have misunderstood your post .... -

It's the boarded-up keep-out appearance during the day which I personally dislike. Also, ironically, keeping shutters shut may actually encourage burglars, because they think if your shutters are closed you are probably away from home.

Famous first line: "It was the afternoon of my eighty-first birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me." ETA: I've read 26 of the books on the list too. Intrigued to see that he's read Douglas Harding (in particular) and RD Laing.

Re burglars and open gates, I think that must be a myth. The people living there are not the only people going up and down the path and closing (or not) the gate!

The smiling smiley is a colon and a bracket with no space between them, but I'll put a space between them to show you what I mean ...... So : and ) gives :) The laughing smiley is a colon and two brackets with no space between them, ditto, So : and ) and ) gives :)) The miserable non-smiley is a colon and a reverse bracket with no space between them, So : and ( gives :( Now can somebody tell me how to do the clinking glasses one, which I miss very much since the forum did away with the smiley bar :))

The flowers are quite different here, though, aren't they? The stem is very similar to a Verbena bonariensis, the same squareness and legginess. But obviously leaves and flowers quite different too. InTexas, good thinking :)

Thought Dan mentioned The Ivy House, Beth? It would be lovely to hold such a community-based evening in London's first community-owned pub, and the Nunhead choirs could be involved as well? It would also mean money from drinks bought went to The Ivy House rather than the EDT ..... Also, there's a proper stage! And a piano (if any of the choirs use one .....) The Dulwich Folk Choir is presently learning songs connected with knitting, for a knitting-singing evening to be held in Dulwich Park! Aimee is teaching the knitters the songs as well! Edited to add a link to The Ivy House website: http://www.ivyhousenunhead.com/

There is a stronger version which you can only get on prescription.

intexasatthe moment Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Paracetamol is good xxxxxxx Paracetamol and Codeine even better (at least I've found it stronger) :)

intexasatthe moment Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > These are what I'd have if I could afford them > ,the type referred to by red devil . > > > > Dont the plantation shutters block the light ? xxxxxxx I think those look nicer, but don't you have to have them either completely closed (presumably at night) or completely open (when you are very exposed)?

I think I'm attuned to seeing shutters now, so my impression is perhaps biased, but certainly around the area I'm in (North Cross Road area) shutters appear to be breeding like rabbits :)

Have belatedly decided I've answered my own question ...... Shutters make your home look like a fortress from the outside, and probably make it feel as if you are in a prison from the inside, when they're pulled across the window, even if (or maybe especially if) the slats are "open". Walking round East Dulwich these days, it feels like a place where everybody just wants to shut everybody else out. Maybe that's one reason why they're called shutters :) I once briefly (very very briefly) went out with somebody who got really twitchy because I always left my front gate open. Shutters feel a bit like a closed gate. Unwelcoming. So I don't think I'll be going for shutters. Oh dear, not on trend then. That'll make a change :)) And in making that decision I've probably halved the potential value of my house. Bother :))

The square shaped stems should be a clue. The petals look like they might be papery like an "everlasting" flower - are they? I don't have time, but there are plant ID websites online, you can go through step by step (type of leaf, type of stem, type of flower, colour etc) and hopefully at least reduce the options a bit? ETA: Thanks re the outline. I have no idea at all what it is (and I've worked in two plant centres specialising in unusual plants - but then my memory is crap so I probably wouldn't recognise anything these days!!!)

Do you have a picture of the leaves? ETA: And/or a picture of the whole plant showing the shape of it?
