  1. Lagoa, that's made my day. What an incredible story. ETA: I suppose the police wouldn't bother fingerprinting the things?
  2. James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > But for East Dulwich crime is markedly up and this > is probably due to our Safer Neighbourhood Team > being abstracted (told to work elsewhere) from our > area. xxxxxxx I have been in correspondence with you before about the total lack of response when our road (Ulverscroft Road) was asked to take part in a Neighbourhood Watch scheme via flyers put through our door. It must have been well over a year ago now, possibly two years! I replied saying I would like to be involved, and despite chasing them several times, including via you (thanks) never heard any more about it. Not helpful, is it. Who runs Neighbourhood Watch schemes? I believe it is the police. So why did they just let it drop? ETA: And Penguin 68, you're absolutely right about the insurance issue. That was the point I was trying to make earlier about using stats from insurance companies as a basis for comparing areas' burglary rates, but you've made it much better than me.
  3. I have no idea who Joe Grint is, but anyway apparently this was pinched off him according to Facebook. And hey it's about Waitrose. Pinched off Joe Grint x UK supermarket chain Waitrose has withdrawn its popular ?essential? range after discovering that the cut-price products had led to a number of poor people shopping there. The discount brand, launched in 2009 to help Waitrose?s core customer base cope with the recession without having to downgrade one of their Range Rovers, was proving extremely successful. This success appears to have come at a price though, with the unwanted side effect of attracting the working class. ?At first it worked fine, our regular shoppers were delighted with the new range, and common people were still put off by the Waitrose branding? explained marketing director Rupert Thomas, ?but as we advertised more, and made the mistake of including the prices of products in our TV commercials, we began to see some undesirable characters appearing in our aisles, enticed in by the prospect of finding a tin of beans for under ?5, which they previously hadn?t expected from us. One horrid man even came in wearing a Hi-Vis vest looking for a sandwich. It was awful.? The popularity of the ?essential? range had seen it quickly expand to include affordable versions of many foodstuffs and household items. To make matters worse Waitrose also starting pointing out that many of their prices were the same as those found in Tescos, attracting even more lower class shoppers and alienating many of their existing clientele. ?It was so demeaning finding out that I wasn?t paying any more for my groceries than a common chav? moaned former Waitrose customer Emily Hamilton-Brown. ?I?ve gone back to doing my weekly shop at Fortnum & Mason now, just to make sure I don?t accidentally purchase something that?s buy-one-get-one-free.? ?Hopefully withdrawing the products and stopping the adverts will stop any additional commoners coming in,? continued Mr Thomas, ?but we still have the problem of getting rid of the ones that have already started shopping with us. They?re still turning up, wandering around looking a bit lost and not buying anything. We?re thinking of putting up signs outside pointing out that Lidl down the road has some great deals on, or maybe we?ll just put down some traps baited with chicken nuggets so we can catch them humanely and release them in Asda.?

Sorry to be dim, but I want to report somebody who has sent me abusive PMs. Can you tell me how I do this as it is different to reporting a post in a thread, thanks.
  6. MissB6 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- I'm also sorry some of our forum friends are so insensitive/protective. xxxxxxx If you're referring to my post - I said I was sorry about the burglary. However, please have a thought for anxious and vulnerable people in our community who see posts stating things like "i am not sure how safe is to live in the area anymore" and "BUT JUST THINK.. IF THAT HAPPENED TO ME HERE WHY NOT HAPPEN TO YOU OR NEXT DOOR !" and become even more anxious and afraid. Do you think that's helpful? There are ways of saying that you've been burgled without putting the fear of God into everybody :) By all means warn others to be careful, but making sure your home is secure is surely a bit of a no-brainer, whether there have been burglaries in your area or not? And if it is secure and they still get in - well, what more could you have done? No point whipping everybody up into a frenzy of fear. The chances of it happening to you are actually quite small, though it doesn't feel like that when it happens (and yes I have been burgled myself - in a quiet country area when I was by myself in the house and asleep in bed. It can happen anywhere). ETA: And the figures given in the Independent article are not for the number of burglaries in the area. If you want to look at the comparative risk of being burgled you should compare police statistics. This is what the article says: MoneySupermarket.com analysed 3.49 million applications for home insurance quotes made between December 2011 and the end of November 2012. They looked at the number of users who said they had made a claim for burglary at their current address in the past two years. The number of claims made per 1,000 enquiries was then calculated, to allow areas to be compared.
  7. PAULONDON Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- i am not sure how safe is to live in the area anymore. xxxxxxxx Sorry you've been burgled, but please don't scaremonger. Burglaries have always happened and they always will. Unless you have statistical evidence that the burglary rate in East Dulwich is rising significantly, please don't say things like this. And even if it was rising, that does not make the area "unsafe". How did the burglars get into your house?
  8. Comment on an article concerning Oscar Pistorius shooting his girlfriend ... "Perhaps it was cheaper than a Valentine's present". Oh dear, I know it shouldn't have made me laugh ...... ETA: Ruffers, :)) :)) :))

    Faulty machine

This is one of the most bizarre threads I have ever read, and that's saying something :)) You bought something that was advertised as "hardly used". When you saw it it did not look "hardly used", but you still went ahead and bought it. Did you not question its condition and actual amount of use? And you paid ?30 for it even though you knew it had been advertised on here for ?20. Does something not strike you as not quite right about all that?
  13. Presumably they can trace his correct address via the car registration number/s, so if you've informed the insurance company who sent it I'd have thought that was all you needed to do? Unless you think it might be somebody living in your road and the minion at the insurance company typed in the wrong house number .... in which case I suppose you could try knocking on doors .....
  14. "They indicate that they will keep the ring but that if you want to hand it in, you must give them money in order to secure it. What do you do?" xxxxxxx Tell them you are not stupid and that if they don't f- off you will call the police? And then report them to the police anyway? ETA: Well, that's what I'd do :))

    Faulty machine

FFS. You bought something. It wasn't described as faulty - presumably. When you got it home you found it was faulty. Is that it? Did you ask to see it working before you bought it? Do you know how to use it? When you found it was faulty, did you take it up with the person who sold it to you and ask for your money back? If so, what did they say? Did they refuse? Or what? Why are you posting about it on here? What is anybody else supposed to do about it? Tallulah, :)) :)) :))
  16. How was it stolen from a lobby, did somebody break in?
  17. Sorry, as you were :)

Somebody who is likely to cause you fear, or worse, when you're walking along the road around 10pm in the dark? Because ..... ??? I can't believe we're debating this on this forum yet again.
  19. Salsaboy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I didn't generalise from a small sample. And given that you were part of the congregation in each church, are you suggesting that in every case you were the only person who wasn't small minded, insular and nasty?

  21. PeckhamRose Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why? xxxxxx It was a previous census, which I should have made clear, and let's just say it was very poorly managed. I can't remember all the details, and even if I could I probably signed some confidentiality clause, but I have never trusted census results since. However hopefully things may have improved as I made my feelings known at the time.

The URL he > linked to is now gone, but here's a picture from > the same site, which I think is of that type. > What do crime prevention officers say? xxxxxxx That looks like the kind of window locks I have. They are approved by insurance companies (mine anyway) and have the advantage that you can leave sash windows open a little way, either at the top or the bottom, when it's very hot during the Summer and you want to go out whilst (obviously) leaving the house secured.

New "person to blame when > customers complain about the food" would be more > accurate > > Same goes for youngs pubs like the clock house. xxxxxx Fair enough. Haven't been to the Plough for years so I have no idea what their menu is like now. All I know is that the new manager at the Dog, Jake, is young and enthusiastic and keen to do new things there (like live music). He told me that he had brought in a new chef. I haven't eaten there. If said chef is any good but isn't actually going to be able to do his own thing there food-wise then I imagine he won't stay long. But whatever the food is like, it can't possibly be worse than the appalling "Sunday roast" I had there some years back where the peas were like bullets and the "roast" potatoes were made to look roast by some sort of food colouring. It looked lovely - just tasted absolutely vile.
  24. StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > Most of the places people have mentioned already > merit inclusion, but anyone who has anything good > to say about food at the Crown & Greyhound or > Plough shows the problem with this kind of thing > xxxxx The Crown and Greyhound has a new manager who has brought a new chef with him, as from a few months back. I agree the food there used to be absolutely dire (I once had one of the worst meals of my life there) but apparently it is now good. Haven't tried it myself yet so I can't say.
