I've just done it. Not keeping the CDs, but am backing up the whole of the digital collection to an external hard drive. I got this: http://www.cocktailaudio.com/home.html Very pleased with it so far and it gets loads of useful firmware updates which are automatic as long it's connected to the internet (which mine permanently is via a WiFi dongle). I'm not particularly attached to any physical items, though I am keeping a few of the CDs which have got a lot of info in the bookets.

It appears that it could be a problem with one of the graphics units, which is evidently a known defect with this model. ETA: I don't have the laptop here, it is with the person who is looking at it who has been noting various diagnostic signs, but thanks everybody. ETA: Fox. My OH neither smokes nor has spilt anything on his laptop. And maybe most manufacturing faults may show up during the warranty period, but it is just not true that all of them necessarily will.

Not sure what point you are making, Fox? Laptops sometimes go wrong however well they are looked after, as does anything with components which may fail.

Right-clicking, yes one of the first things tried (by me) and nothing happened. Dulwich Fox, ditto. Someone looking at it and it isn't looking good at the moment. Shaman it's an HP, not sure of model as it isn't here at the moment, not sure of exact age, maybe five years? He can't afford to replace it. I had to buy it to replace one I spilled wine over whilst DJing :(

Thanks Otta, trying to but he's out :)) Not sure if I could use my TV screen. I also once had the same problem, and it was the backlight that had failed. OH has tried shining a torch on the screen, but there is no sign of any display :( Edited again to say: Got someone looking at it now ....

Can anybody help with my OH's laptop problem? On start-up, light is coming on etc but screen is black. I don't have a separate monitor to connect his laptop to. Is there any way I can connect it to my laptop so that his display is shown on my laptop's screen? Trying to eliminate possible causes of the problem. Have tried F8 to start in safe mode but that hasn't worked. Thanks.

Finished the last of the Christmas cake and the sweet sherry a few days back. None of the chocolates etc lasted much beyond Christmas week :)) Stella went long ago, as did all the leftover white wine,fizzy wine, rum and brandy. Still got a bottle of dry sherry, ginger wine, several bottles of red and a bottle of gin. Oh, and about a stone of unwanted flab :))

The seeds are nothing to do with councils' "In Bloom" events. They are for community gardens who are registered with the RHS. The RHS just happen to be publicising the seed sowing as part of their Britain in Bloom campaign. CD - Can't remember, probably something cheap from Woollies or somewhere. Dylan maybe. Can't remember my first cassette either. Download - Jon Boden's A Folksong A Day project, whatever the first month was when he started it, can't be arsed to check :)) I don't normally download stuff but it was only available as a download. ETA: Come to think of it my first download was probably off Limewire in the days before it was riddled with viruses and weird tracks.

If you are a local registered Bloom or It's Your Neighbourhood group, or are an RHS affiliated society, you can apply for free seeds. You may already know this! Each group can apply to receive one free seed pack, containing a selection of 15 different herb and vegetable seeds, suitable for sowing directly into the ground in April. Seed packs include: Chives, parsley, coriander, dill, garlic chives, sage, thyme, red frills mustard, radishes, carrots, fennel, spring onions, spinach, nasturtiums and marigolds (for their edible flowers). They are to be sown in public places where the wider community can enjoy the harvest - I assume all the local community gardens would come into this category. To get the seeds, either fill in the form at http://www.rhs.org.uk/britaininbloomlaunch or phone 020 7821 3069 The RHS are hoping that you will hold seed-sowing events during the weekend of 13-14 April, but otherwise any time in April is fine.

I lived in South Norwood in the late seventies/early eighties, and not only has there been no sign of gentrification since then, it seems to have actually gone downhill (admittedly I've only been back about twice since then, but once was quite recently!). It's always had good transport links so I can't see that affecting anything really. Depends on your priorities, surely. If cheap housing is more important to you than a pleasant environment, then go for it. The bit around the lake's quite nice but that's about it. It's true that Balham used to be quite grotty (as did Clapham), but they're both on the Northern Line.

Why do they bother? If they're going to take things somewhere to dump them, why not just take them to the tip?

My memory is clearly crap then, and now I can see why it was painted over :))

Just received the following email from the Lib Dems in case it is any help to people East Dulwich Snowy Weather Update - Friday 18 January. The weather forecast is that it will snow all day Friday 18 January and settle. That it will keep snowing all day Saturday and Sunday with minus temperatures. So the snow is likely to stay. Monday the forecast is for snow but temperatures hovering just above freezing so during the day we should see some melting. Elderly. No specific delays for bus routes P13, 12 40, 176, 185, 197, 484. we've asked for the road works at East Dulwich Road/Peckham Rye to be suspended to relieve congestion during the snowy weather and before the road become icy. Trains. First Capital Connect have a broken train at Blackfriars causing delays to services via Herne Hill, Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye, Nunhead. Southern trains into East Dulwich are running an altered time table - still trains running just not as many.
