  1. Just an interesting happening - and damn, I missed it, I was cooking my lunch :))

We've already got bloody Oliver Bonas, *hite Stuff and Cafe Nero, isn't that enough??? Not to mention F*xt**s!
  3. Great photos!
  4. StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Sue - I think i*rate was being sarcastic and > berating the iceland knockers xxxxxx Oh dear, sorry i*rate!! BLUSH :( So does that mean it isn't true that it's closing?
  5. That's really sad. The last time I was in there I had extraordinarily good and cheery service from the person on the till. It made a really pleasant change. She was just being lovely to everybody. And they recently had a notice in their window thanking everybody for their enquiries and concern and saying they didn't yet know what was happening. Unlike the charming i*rate, I don't think the shop is ghastly at all, and I will miss it. ETA: And to say "hurray" when people have been told just before Christmas that they are losing their jobs on 4 January, when in the present climate they will find it extremely hard to find employment, just beggars belief.
  6. Funnily enough, I was just saving a Word document and noticed it was 12.12.12 - so now waiting with bated breath for 12.12 :)) And as there are only twelve months, no it won't happen again in our lifetimes unless medical science has a quantum leap :))

  8. Thanks Huguenot, that's very helpful.

I've always assumed that the "family" section was actually for people with young children - although I know that's not strictly the definition of "family" - so I never go there. I can't be the only one! If Huguenot's suggestions aren't appropriate for your thread, you could try the lounge?

  11. Thanks James, hopefully people won't travel across Southwark during the week to find no stalls there!
  12. Thanks right-clicking, the only problem is that all I have are five black jumpers on the thermostat labelled 1 to 5 and five white switches in the receiver, also labelled 1 to 5. I have no idea what frequencies these numbers correspond to :)) All I have is some instructions off the internet which say "we have found the removal of blocks 2 and 4 to be very successful" :)) ETA: So I guess I'll try that then :))
  13. I have a wireless programmable thermostat - a Salus RT500RF. I had had it about four years with no problem at all, when out of the blue the boiler started going on and off randomly - so for example even if I turned the thermostat down to 16, I'd get up in the morning to a hothouse with the living room temperature in the 20s. The flame symbol on the thermostat wasn't showing, but the light on the boiler was green. I had to turn all the radiators off to try to save gas, plus it was driving me mad(der) when the boiler kept going on and off all night :( This would happen for a while, then it seemed to correct itself for weeks, then it would start again. It's out of its guarantee period. Long story short, I phoned the manufacturer who said that this was an old style of thermostat. Basically what was happening was that something else within the wireless range was controlling the boiler, such as another boiler thermostat (or I've found on the internet it could be a wireless baby monitor or doorbell, though I can't see how that could control a boiler). The problems did start around the time that I had new neighbours, though obviously that could be completely coincidental. Basically I was told that the solution was to change the address code/frequency. I know how to do this and it seems quite easy to do. There are five possible frequencies. I know this seems a very stupid question, but do I have to keep on changing the frequency until I find one where there's no interference? Given that the problem is so erratic, it might be weeks until there was interference (and I actually noticed it - which generally I only have done because the temperature has suddenly shot up when I've been there). Will this actually resolve things, or do I have to bite the bullet and pay again to get a different kind of thermostat? This one hasn't got great reviews on forums, but on the other hand that may be because people don't realise that this problem can arise.
  14. This isn't a request for help, but I notice in the latest edition of Southwark Life that in the article on markets it says that North Cross Road market is "now open Monday to Saturday, opening times vary". I live just round the corner, and I don't recall seeing any stalls there from Monday to Thursday. Is it really open on those days, or was that a mistake?

LadyDeliah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > There always seem to be different versions of the > same types of pyramid schemes popping up, > especillay in an economic downturn. > > Fool and money springs to mind. xxxxxx Yep, it's same old same old. The thing is bound to collapse because it's totally unsustainable, and anybody coming to it late loses all their money. ETA: I did think at least some of these schemes had been made illegal in this country? Perhaps there are some subtle differences between different types of scheme.
  17. KidKruger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Sue, that's bollox, they will lose more money than > they will ever make with that policy, total > lunacy. > xxxxxxxx Told the manager it was ridiculous. His response was just "Well I've got a business to run."
  18. Well, we went into the EDT today to enquire about the possibility of holding some gigs upstairs. For Friday and Saturday nights, they now want a guaranteed ?1500 bar take. They insist on having a bar upstairs rather than have people go downstairs to get drinks. So if we had a hundred punters (and the room wouldn't hold many more than that), they would have to spend an average of ?15 each on drinks - that's after they have bought a ticket for the gig. And if they didn't, we'd have to make up the difference from our own pockets, having already paid the headliner from the ticket money. So I guess that's why there isn't much live music upstairs at the EDT. But the good news is, there is a new manager at the Dog (Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich Village) who is very keen to put on live music in the function room upstairs.
  19. The other side of this - I had my bloody card stopped earlier this week due to "a potentially fraudulent pattern of transactions" - which on inquiry turned out to be my three purchases at the local toyshop, one purchase of petrol at a local garage, one local takeaway, and an Amazon purchase. I only found out when four online transactions wouldn't go through and I phoned the bank to find out why. When I asked why they hadn't phoned me about these supposedly fraudulent purchases, let alone tell me the card had been stopped, they said their fraud department was "very busy" but they would have let me know "within 24 hours." No wonder they are "very busy" if they see people buying toys locally in the run-up to Christmas as potentially fraudulent. GRRRRR. It was First Direct, as well, who are usually excellent.
  20. Jeremy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > To play devil's advocate for a minute, why do we > need local live music? But it's much nicer to be able to walk to it and not have to brave the crowds in Camden, and the night buses :)
  21. Well the What's On section in this forum usually has news of gigs happening round here, and there are similar forums (although much less used) for SE5, SE23 and Crystal Palace, and probably other ones as well. I can't remember them all as Nygel does the Goose postings on them, but there was a thread on here listing them all not long ago, you could try doing a search. To the best of my knowledge there is no "local online gig guide" as such, as how would you define "local"? There is an online Time Out gig guide, as I'm sure you know, but of course it would depend on whether individual promoters use it for local gigs round here. Quite often we send in listings to Time Out, The Guardian etc and then they don't appear, at least in the printed version, even for our big concert nights. Basically any guide is more or less completely dependent on whether individual promoters send their listings to it. I only know the folk listings places, which may be of no use to you, but if it is, online the main places are Folk London (also has a paper version which we sell at our gigs), Folk and Roots, fRoots, and also Simply What's On, which will email you a list of what's on in your area once a week. You could try googling "live music" and the postcodes you'd consider "local"? I was thinking about this last night, and it does seem to me that one of the main reasons there is not more live music round here is probably lack of venues. We have had huge difficulty finding places locally for actual gigs (rather than our Singaround) which a) Have separate rooms b) the room is a suitable size for our expected number of punters c) don't charge for the room (actually we've only come across two potential local venues which would have charged us, as most places are only too happy to make their money on the bar) and d) have the required nights free - we don't put on gigs during the week, only two Fridays a month plus the occasional Saturday. For larger numbers (we often get over 200 people coming to our "concerts") it's even more difficult. You wouldn't believe the time we've spent looking for suitable venues. Although we think The Old Nun's Head is a great pub, we are really sorry to have to leave SE22 where we've been for four years (and even more sorry that we've now got a long walk there and back !!!) Another issue, of course, is that some promoters are less tenacious than us and just give up. People don't realise the amount of work involved in putting on and publicising a gig. I think some people think we just turn up on the night and take their money :)) It's practically a full-time job, with very little financial reward unless you're putting on very big names in a massive capacity venue. When we first started doing it, we both had actual full-time jobs as well, and I don't know how we did it, really. Plus - the demographic round here seems to be weighted towards people with young children, and they are probably the least likely to come out at night to a gig. Promoters are not going to want to spend time and money putting on live music if the punters don't come to it.
  22. If there are slippery tiles then surely Londis are liable for your fall? Very sorry to hear you are in pain and hope you are getting proper medical attention and pain relief ETA: If Londis have changed the tiles today then that implies the tiles are in fact their responsibility. You might want to get advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau.

  25. Just wanted to say I hope you're OK after your fall, Mary. But also, people may not know where you mean by Budgens - I think you may mean the corner shop which is now Londis, on the corner of North Cross Road opposite The Palmerston? It used to be Budgens.
