  1. Just had two people knock on my door about exactly the same thing - "Have you had your grant?" When I said that people had only just been round, I was told "Yes it's my colleague, I've got to make sure he's doing his job properly." I pointed out that people were likely to get pretty pissed off being called on twice within a very short space of time about the same subject. I already got my grant some time ago, but I didn't use this company, I checked out what other providers were charging first (unless you are on certain benefits, you still have to pay something towards the cost of installation).

Clearly that would cost too much. The council have agreed to order more appropriate dark blue bins in the future. Other councils appear to have managed to take the visual environment into account when ordering blue recycling bins, by ordering a darker less obtrusive blue, so I'm not sure why you think this is such an odd notion.
  4. See this thread about draughtproofing wiindows and floors
  5. Huggers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > we didn't get our recycling collected yesterday! > that's over two weeks. anyone else? xxxxxxx Have you reported it to the council? They will just do nothing otherwise, their collection schedule appears to be completely up the creek. ETA: Mind you don't hold your breath, I'm still waiting for the smaller green bin I ordered. Admittedly they said they couldn't say when I would get it, so I have no idea when is a reasonable time after which to chase them ....
  6. DaveR Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- I, on the other hand, am taking > the piss, and freely admit it. Landscape? Don't > make me laugh. It's a Victorian railway suburb, > not an unspoilt wilderness. xxxxxxxx Just because it's not an unspoilt wilderness doesn't mean to say we should just stand back and see it further spoilt, DaveR. Those people who are happy with having the area where they live covered in bright blue plastic have obviously got no aesthetic sensibility whatsoever. If this was constant loud music noise, would you still feel the same? It's visual noise. And I would suggest equally harmful to people's mental wellbeing.
  7. In case anybody missed it on This thread I got a public commitment from Barrie Hargrove at the council assembly last night to take aesthetic considerations into account when deciding on bin colours for future orders. Sadly, of course, that doesn't help the present situation as they're hardly going to spend enormous amounts of money changing the shade of blue of bins they've already bought and distributed. (6)

Surely....? > > Only just seen this thread, and my thoughts > exactly xxxxxxx The guy who has moved out of the Junction shop told me that there is no way this shop will become an Indian restaurant. ETA: Sadly, as it was a Saturday night and I'd had a few bevvies, I can't remember exactly what he said, but it was something to do with council regulations for Lordship Lane, in fact he may have also said it couldn't be a restaurant at all, but whatever it was, it deffo won't be an Indian restaurant. So I think the OP is confirmed as a wind-up.
  12. Thanks Cassius, but it's a pity nobody was apparently consulted - or even told - about the colour of the new bins before they were ordered. As it is, as virtually everybody who wants one now has their bin, and presumably the council has some spare ones, plus they last for years, the only real effect is that maybe now the council will take aesthetics into account in other similar areas of their work, because it's too late for my representation to make much practical difference at this point :-S
  13. Terry Pratchett is brilliant :)-D

Forgive my ignorance :-$

Just looked it up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trick-or-treating ETA: Shame it's all become so commercialised now
  19. flapjackdavey Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- Taco Donkey. xxxxxxxx I had to look that up. I wish I hadn't :))
  20. I don't know what to do with myself - Dusty Springfield ETA: Oh no sorry, that's the don't and not the honey. AARRGGGHH I knew I should never have come onto this thread. And I've only had two cans of Red Stripe! Ok honey. HONEY - BOBBY GOLDSBORO Yes I cheated, I googled :-$
  21. Bloody hell, FJD, you're not entering into the spirit of the thing at all, you're supposed to NAME THE SONG AND NAME THE BAND! Anyway, surely you're thinking of Sugar Sugar by the Archies, no?? ETA: Except that was in 1969 and they weren't a soul band, so maybe not. OK sorry, as you were :))
  22. binary_star Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- I think historically, it > has been a lot easier to buy a house for first > time buyers than it is now, which is why the > market is saturated with renters...? xxxxxx This probably isn't at all helpful, but in many areas of the UK house prices are actually relatively low. You just have to read the Guardian colour supplement on Saturdays which has a feature each week about houses in various parts of the country. I guess salaries are probably equally low in those areas, however. Maybe the best option is to do work where you can work from home, at London rates and then move to a cheap area? Probably not at all helpful, as I said. The upside of being as ancient as me is that I bought my first place for ?650 in Dundee (no bathroom, shared bog with the flat next door - honestly) and now have a house in ED which I could never afford to buy now. The downside is - well, most things really :))
  23. binary_star Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- Private renting is a fecking laugh. xxxxxxx I've been on both sides of it, as a landlord (sexist term but hey) and as a tenant. I've had very good experiences as both, but also absolutely appalling experiences as both. I don't think you can tar everybody with the same brush, on either side. I just think you have to be extremely careful, whether you're the landlord or the tenant. And even then, things can go very very wrong. It made me realise (bit like employing tradespeople) that I'm an absolutely crap judge of people :-$
  24. AlanMedic, there's another recent thread about this somewhere, but try changing your email password, for a start. ETA: And if you are receiving emails supposedly from a friend but you know they're not actually from them, get them to change their email passwords as well. And do a search, the other thread was very recent and had some good advice from people like DulwichFox who are technological geniuses (you owe me a pint now, Fox :)) )
  25. Annette Curtain Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What were the dildos like? > xxxxxxx Quite pretty and very expensive. But they wouldn't let her sell them, because "we're a family store, how will people explain them to their kids?" :)) ETA: Bit bizarre selling dildos in a dress shop, no?
