  1. When did it become 148? Many years ago we ate here, and I can't remember exactly what was wrong with the meal, but we were told by the manager that the chef was drunk 🤣
  2. Their website says they are closed from 5 to 13 August, so maybe they were using up the last few bits of chicken ....
  3. Thanks for the clarification! Though although of course none is more right (unfortunate choice of words!) than the other, it does seem that there is a lot more violence and lack of empathy from the people on one "side", for want of a better word. Not sure how relevant this is, but many years ago I lodged for a short time with a couple who were committed Christians. If memory serves, one of them had fought in the war. I asked how he could reconcile this with "Thou shalt not kill" etc. Basically he couldn't. I'm wondering, if it came to it, how many of the thousands of peaceful and non violent people who came out on the streets recently would actually physically fight the fascists (or whoever) if circumstances called for it.
  4. Pardon? Are you posting this in response to what I said? If so, how exactly have you come to this interpretation of what I said? To be absolutely clear, I did not mean that certain arrests were made because it was being SAID that there was two tier policing ! Who is disagreeing with you, exactly?
  5. My understanding is that it's both those, but the majority of identified troublemakers are from one "group", consisting of the various subgroups involved in the initial riots.
  6. From what I have read so far, there have been one or two arrests of people who weren't right wing racists and/or thugs out to thump people and cause trouble, but the vast majority were in the latter groups. If it is being said that those arrested are "from all political and cultural backgrounds", I assume this is because some people have laid accusations such as "two tier policing", implying that people of certain groups are treated differently to people of other groups for similar offences. I thought the point was exactly that, that the photo wouldn't be much good in identifying who it was?
  7. To be fair, unless someone from the group has told Sam that their arrangements have changed, he can't be expected to change the website! But even if they have, he has a really heavy workload and works very hard at putting on and overseeing a wide range of excellent events and activities, so it may take him a while to do it.
  8. Watched? Didn't anybody try to stop them?
  9. Also it should be clear at the time of the session, because for lane swimming the pool is divided into lanes (fast, slow etc) whereas for the family/open swim or whatever it's called, it isn't. It wouldn't be appropriate to have babies in the lane swimming sessions, and I've never seen children in them so I have no idea if there's an age limit, however presumably they would have to be able to swim and be able to go in the deep end (not that it's very deep at Dulwich!) But I haven't been there during school holidays.
  10. It's on the Ivy House website under "activities". First Monday of the month at 7pm. Https://www.ivyhousenunhead.co.uk/activities/ The pub won't be directly running this group themselves, but if you did want to contact them, the events manager is Sam and his email address is [email protected] He might have a contact number or email address for whoever started the group, should you want to find out more about it before turning up to it!
  11. Pound shop. Just the thing for that location 😂

  13. Yes, it's my understanding that the lane swimming is completely separate sessions. I thought that the family sessions were for people who just want to enjoy themselves playing about in the water, or for new or scared swimmers who are still getting used to walking about in the pool, rather than seriously swimming in it. But maybe things have changed, it's a while since I've been.
  14. Sorry, I know it's well meant, but I can't see the point of this letter. It's stating the obvious, the issues are already being addressed, and it's talking in vague generalities instead of making specific suggestions for change. Re the Mail, I saw a picture today of a load of Mail headlines which were definitely inflammatory. I don't think I could find it again easily, it was on Facebook I think, could have been the Guardian. Re the Bibby, I suggested exactly that at the weekend. I wasn't joking.
  15. There used to be one, on the corner opposite the little charity shop. I think there's a coffee place there now? It was certainly old school and no frills, but the cakes never looked very appetising. It was like something from the fifties (in my opinion).
  16. Take it up with the management.
  17. That link doesn't work?
  18. I know! Another pound shop! It would be worth it just to watch the reaction on here 🤣 As you were, only joking obviously, the pound shop we have now has been very disappointing, sadly. I've had bargains in pound shops in the past, but I've given up looking in this one.
  19. Lidl would be great, but it's not going to happen, is it?
  20. I do agree we must try, but I suppose it's about where we each focus our energies. If I thought that march had any hope of changing anything, I would have been on it. I'm wondering if some sort of letter or petition to Starmer signed by thousands of people and widely publicised might have more effect? But easy to say, and I have too much on my plate at the moment to start one myself
  21. The only things in the Palmerston's favour (in my opinion) are that Olga (?) the manager is lovely - I hope she is still there, as I haven't seen her lately - , and that they didn't have a television during the Euros 😂 Having to put this in a new post because I can't edit my previous one, apparently due to the smiley, which I can neither delete nor add anything beneath it. I fondly remember when it was The Lord Palmerston and had old men playing dominoes. I always wondered where they went after the changes in the pub. But then that was back in the days when The Actress was The Uplands Tavern and infamous for fights. Must have been around 1991, I'm losing track of time ..... Oh! My posts have been merged! Hooray! The Castle is fairly unchanged, to be fair. Although they have done away with the juke box, which used to be excellent. Sob.
  22. ❤️❤️❤️ How nice to have some good news!
  23. These marches really don't seem to be having any impact, do they? I went on two, or possibly three, can't remember now, but still the situation in Gaza is heartbreaking. Meanwhile we have a change of government, which seems to have made not a jot of difference so far as this issue is concerned. I just despair really. I left the Labour Party and I didn't vote for them, both because of Starmer, but I honestly can't see that "telling Starmer" by going on a march is going to help change anything, though it might make me feel better. Sorry. I'm open to being persuaded otherwise. I admire the people who are persisting.
  24. OK, I'll bite. If the space was too short for your car, why would you park there? Why would you not get a fine, if you were partly parked on the pavement? But a strange post for a "new poster", as I can't see what possible reason you could have for challenging a fine in the circumstances you describe, so I am suspicious as well ....
  25. Going back to The Palmerston - is it just me who really hates the font they have chosen for the name of the pub at the front? They've done a good job on the painting front, but that font sets my teeth on edge. I don't know why I'm worried really. The heart of the pub was ripped out when the previous "refurb" removed all the interesting features like the pole (?) with painted plants climbing up it, and put in a mish mash of stuff which doesn't go together at all. In my opinion.
