That really is a total rip-off. I was always told you couldn't cut hair properly unless it was wet, and if someone tried to cut mine dry I'd walk out. They should at least wet it to cut it even if you don't want to pay to have it washed and dried.

What about all the cancer sufferers > who never quit smoking? @#$%& 'em, idiots, they > deserve it. xxxxxx I haven't seen anybody here suggesting she or anybody else "deserved" to get cancer. :-S I drink more than I should. If I die of liver disease, I shall be very sorry for myself but will also be clear that I had the choice to stop drinking and chose not to. If other people "judged" me for that I would probably be pissed off, but I would understand why they did. It can be hard to give something up even if you know it's bad for you. I knew someone who died of lung cancer in his early thirties leaving two young kids. He was a heavy smoker. But having a smear test doesn't even involve giving anything up except a bit of time to attend a GP appointment. Anyway whatever the ins and outs of why Jade Goody didn't do this, I still think the publicity is helpful in prompting other people to take appropriate steps to prevent/treat possible cancer.

In Times Of Doom & Gloom Things Could Be Worse!
Sue replied to Tony.London Suburbs's topic in The Lounge
Brilliant :)) I didn't see the end coming, so I must be really thick. Duh. -
I eat rice cakes. They're usually somewhere between around 85p and ?1.20 a packet, depending where you buy them. The other day I went into Somerfield. They had two kinds (same brand, same size) - sesame and plain. The sesame ones were around a quid. The plain ones had a big notice "Low Fat" and the price had shot up to ?1.50. The thing is - all rice cakes are low fat! They're just made of, er, rice. There's nothing you could do to them to make them lower in fat than they already are. Rip-off or what? (6)

The reason for smear tests is precisely to catch this kind of cancer at a very very early stage. My mother died of cervical cancer because she had never had a smear test and by the time it was diagnosed it was too late to prevent it spreading. I am sorry for Jade Goody's situation, but unlike many other people with cancer, she had the opportunity to prevent it and/or to have it treated at a stage when such treatment could have been successful, and for whatever reason she chose not to take that opportunity. I agree with Keef that if the publicity persuades young (and older) women to go for smear tests and not to put off having symptoms checked out, then it can only be a good thing.

Update on 549 lordship lane (Concrete House)
Sue replied to bob's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hey, can't believe it, that is such amazing news. Hooray! :)-D -
There is a thread on Somerfield, they have definitely been bought by the Co-op, so I can't see how they can be opening another store since all their existing stores are either being sold (eg to Waitrose) or turned into Co-ops.

I am just trying to find my most hideous photos to have turned into woodcarved plaques for Christmas presents next year for those in my family who are fond of kitsch :)) Can't wait to investigate this shop, it sounds wonderful :))

Is there a pic? I missed it, being a miserable sod and glued to my computer instead of out sledging and building things with snow :))

New Restaurant on Forest Hill Road

The buses through ED have been rubbish anyway lately.

A pity yes but they surely have only themselves to blame. I would gladly have gone in there and bought things or got prescriptions, particularly now the pharmacy on North Cross Road has become a chain, but on the rare occasion I have ventured in I found the atmosphere so incredibly depressing and the range of stuff on sale so totally unlike anything I wanted to buy, I couldn't wait to get out again.

SeanMacGabhann Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > >if Sema Thai can > pack em in on a Monday afternoon, you KNOW > business is brisk. > > xxxxx Hope it was better food and service than we had on New Year's Day (also very crowded) - I used to like Sema Thai, and had eaten there many times, but that meal was so extremely and extraordinarily bad in just about every respect, I'm never eating there again. Slow service I could forgive them for, as they hadn't expected so many punters, but not the absolutely appalling food. I can only think their chef was on holiday and one of the waiters who had never cooked in his/her life was in the kitchen. :-S

damzel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Oh no, I don't want a Somerfield there, you can > get pretty much everything they sell from the > smaller shops that are nearby. xxxxxx You won't get a Somerfield there. They have been taken over by the Co-op, who are in the process of selling off some Somerfield stores and changing the rest to Co-ops. There's a separate thread about this elsewhere in relation to the Lordship Lane Somerfield.

I've never had any problems coming home by myself late at night - as has already been said, the trains and buses are usually very crowded. The 176 night bus is very useful.

I'm supposed to be going to a conference which I was really looking forward to, and I can't even find out if it's still on, let alone if I can get there (6) This weather has been forecast for days, why are the transport people never prepared for it???

Hmm. We had lunch there last Saturday. They had "run out of" the fish and chips (at 1pm with no sign of anybody actually eating lunch) so we had the "Cumberland sausage and mash". It arrived looking absolutely beautiful, and we got all excited. A lovely mound of mash with huge bangers tastefully arranged around the sides, and a sprig of real thyme on top. Sadly, the sausages were completely tasteless and I would be surprised if they had even been waved past a pig, as they seemed to be mostly that other stuff they put in sausages - rusk? - and they had a really horrible smooth texture. The potato was also tasteless despite having fresh parsley in it and a few stems of chives scattered about (three types of real herb on one plate, but none of it seemed to add anything except a bit of greenery). The peas were alright. It was about seven quid each. Next time we're going back to Franklins for their Welsh rarebit/rabbit which is not only much tastier but also cheaper! Better beer too. Sorry Uplands, must do better. We do like your new look though :)

If Cafe Noodle is the place near Chandelier, both my partner and I had violent stomach upsets after having lunch there.

They managed to smash their way out of a back window (I think) but were marooned on a small balcony with no way out. Luckily neighbours heard them shouting and called the fire service. They both had to go to hospital (smoke inhalation etc). If there hadn't been a balcony, they would have had it. I'm concerned at these posts above because I often work at home, but I often don't deadlock the door when I'm working because my remote working cryptocard is on my keyring - think I will have to make some changes ....
