What was the tree on the public consultation document, macroban? I can't remember (though I'm sure I would have commented on it in my response if it had been a palm tree!)

They've possibly planted something they think will be suited to the ED climate in fifty years' time, without considering the shorter term - but who knows. :-S

Another word in for Ganapati - but Keef, I'm sure they do change their menu - I went once and they didn't have my favourite - I mentioned I was disappointed - when our order came, they'd made me up a little dish of it specially, and didn't charge. Now that's service :)

Please don't blame yourself, it wasn't your fault. In the country at night, you can en hear small creatures squealing as they are carried off by owls etc.. and sometimes in the daytime too. I had a bird of prey make off with a screaming starling in my garden in ED. I know it's upsetting to witness, but basically animals kill each other. It doesn't sound like it was your rat poison that did it.

I've only eaten there once, and the whole place reeked of toilet freshener, which put me off my food somewhat! However the food and service were OK (but we were quite early so they weren't very busy). My gripe with the Herne is their advertising a beer festival via posters with no times on, then closing the beer tent early (I think it was 9.30pm) "because we don't want people making a noise in the garden, but you can buy a beer from the bar and bring it into the garden if you want". Erm, some error in logic there? :))

On topic, I have had a few bad bus experiences recently (176 driver completely missed out the stop at the Elephant, so a load of people waiting to get off had to walk all the way back from the other side of the roundabout; 40 driver of half-empty bus failed to stop when hailed at request stop). I got the reg number and the run number (on the side of the bus) of the 176, but when I tried to report it via the tfl website, I got a "this email address is not known" message back! Would it be too cynical to suppose that tfl is trying to minimise the number of complaints it has to a) deal with b) publicise statistics of? I just couldn't be bothered to pursue it any further :-S

Well it's amazing it arrived at all - I posted a vintage postcard to my sister-in-law for her birthday last year, stupidly not putting it in an envelope, and it never arrived - I assume it was nicked en route from the East Dulwich postbox I posted it in to her East Dulwich address. :(

Therefore she carried a slip of paper with it on in her purse (we did not know this). Her purse was stolen, they took out ?400 before the card was stopped. The bank would not refund the money (fair enough) because the pin number was with the card. It's hard for older people - my memory is bad enough! - but if you can't remember a pin, there are ways to disguise it and still carry it so it's not obviously a pin :-S

Great photos! I once saw a wonderful rainbow over Tower Bridge, while crossing London Bridge - stopped me in my tracks, but sadly I didn't have a camera with me :-S
