The Blake mural has been painted over by the Council
Sue replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've just been forwarded this. I'm intending going to the meeting if I can make it, suggest anybody else who feels strongly might like to do the same? ____________________________________________ From: Allison, Ursula Sent: 30 September 2008 13:56 To: '[email protected]'; 'Eileen Conn'; '[email protected]'; Kotecha, Bimal; Nardell, Gordon; Jones, Susan; Glover, Mark; Ward, Veronica; '[email protected]'; Alan & Lulu Chapman Cc: Sheaff, Jon; Whitehead, Anya; Thornton, Rosie Subject: Blake Mural meeting Hello All, I would like to propose that we meet on Wednesday 15 October at 6pm at the Blake Mural. The reason I'm suggesting it be held in 2 weeks time is to give us enough time to invite key stakeholders and interested local community members and advertise it to ensure a good turn out. Also, Anya Whitehead, the Arts and Heritage Manager has contacted Stan Peskett and asked for provisional costings for the work, so we should have heard back from him by then. We know that the local community ideally want the mural restored so unless this changes we can assume we do not need to consult on this. The purpose of the meeting is to to inform the local community about how we are going to go about restoring the mural. The plan so far is as follows: 1 Contact Dulwich Festival and owner of wall to gain permission to restore mural. 2 Discuss with original artist options for repairing the mural under his direction, including the possiblility of community involvement in this process. 3 Implement works. I will be putting up several posters around Goose Green and the Playground advertising this meeting. Please circulate this email to anyone who may be interested in attending. Kind regards, Ursula Allison Community Outreach Officer (Dulwich Area Parks) -
Yes I believe there was some evidence, if you read the previous thread. And when my bank phoned to tell me my card had been cloned I mentioned Somerfield and they said "how did you know"?
-
We went there recently for a late breakfast, never been there before, had experience similar to Monniemae, had to wait about an hour because they said they were "busy", but there were only about three other (disgruntled) customers, one of whom was given the wrong order when it eventually came. They seemed to be trying to cook on the tiniest frying pan in the world. At first it was a joke as we waited and waited .. and waited .. then it became not a joke, as we had things to do and time ticked on ... and on ... and on ..... And sorry but it wasn't worth waiting for, I had been looking forward to the black pudding but it was horrid, and they had run out of bubble and squeak. Wouldn't go back there again. The caff next to the Palmerston seems much better value, and they will cook you things that aren't on the menu if you ask, like poached eggs (at least I don't think they're on the menu!) and their portions are enormous :)

If it's not and the till balances, there's no way anything can be proved either way. And now I really must work :)

Jimbob Wrote: > if you,re sooooooo concerned why not stick your > head back into somerfield and have a word with the > manager.(6)(6) xxxxxxxxx Because then that really would be making an accusation, wouldn't it? I'd rather give someone the benefit of the doubt - but I'm also suggesting people be aware of my experience. Last week I had my card out in Somerfield ready to pay, and a complete stranger came up to me and asked me if I was aware that many people in East Dulwich had apparently had cards cloned after shopping there. As it happened I knew that (mine was one of them) but if I hadn't known, I'd have been grateful to her for telling me. What's the point of a forum if you can't share things with other people which might be helpful? And now I have to go and work, I have a big day/evening at work tomorrow, and I won't be able to post again on this thread until very late tomorrow or Wednesday, so if I don't respond to your response, please don't read anything into it :)

All I'm saying is that an assistant in Somerfield did not give me my cashback despite having asked me if I wanted cashback a very short time before. And yes - I wasn't sure it was a genuine error as I don't usually find shop assistants making conversation after I've packed my bags and am about to go, when there is a queue waiting. That doesn't make it an "accusation". This has never happened to me before in years of getting cashback in shops. You used to have to initial the slip, does that not happen any more? I have started a thread about it because there appear to have been other problems relating to cards (cloning) where a common factor seems to have been that cards were used in Somerfield. I thought I had carefully worded the post. Just saying, if you ask for cashback make sure they don't forget to give it to you, that's all. I thought it was worth starting a thread, sorry if others don't think so. If you don't realise you've not been given the cash till you've left the shop, it's too late, isn't it? Edited to change some of what I'd written and also to say - it was a man who served me, not a woman as assumed above :)
-
If you're offered cashback in Somerfield - make sure they give you the cash. Luckily I realised yesterday while I was still at the till. Genuine error? I don't know. But the assistant was doing a lot of merry talking whilst I was about to leave with my shopping - to distract me from the fact he hadn't given me my cash? I don't know. I'd only just started using my card in there again, too :-S

The Blake mural has been painted over by the Council
Sue replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've received another email from Bimal - here's an extract. ...I was contacted by the artist himself yesterday and have steered him towards the contacts that I gave to you. Fingers crossed this will assist to speed up matters and lend toward a touch up rather than deletion of the mural. -

I received this today ..... Hiya Sue, Just to give you a quick update. I have heard that the mural matter is now being dealt with by our Culture and Leasure unit and specifically one of the senior members from the team named Anya Whitehead. I have not personally contacted her to get an update, but if you would like to get in touch to learn more about any planned works and any potential stakeholder consultation, that I imagine and would hope will be taking place, please direct your inquiry to [email protected] or 0207 525 3552. This matter is definitely something of high priority and I agree with your sentiments that it would be a shame if the mural was covered up. A little chineese whisper that I was able to gain during my pursuit of the matter yesterday mentioned that the artist that had originally painted the mural was to be contacted about touching up the effected area so, it appears that there is a shared view from officers and the local community to try and regenerate the artwork back to it's original state. However, the artist aparently lives in California, so it may take a bit of time to arrange all the pragmatic issues, and again, this was second hand news so please do not take this as the agreed and/or final option. I will of course do my best to keep you posted on any further details and community consultation matters that I learn about. I hope this is somewhat helpful and if for any reason the contact that I mention above turns out to not be leading on the project, please feel free to come back to me and I will do my best to get some definitive officer details.... Kind Regards, B -
Who bought tickets for Dick Gaughan at the EDT?
Sue replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes it was a nice venue. We had two more gigs booked there for this year, in October (Martin Carthy) and November (Dick Gaughan) - which the EDT had been advertising in their window and inside. I don't want to say too much, but you may have seen on this very forum that the EDT is changing the room upstairs into a "Private Members Club" (sic). That was also how we found out that our venue was being ripped apart and that we could no longer hold our gigs there. Yep - via the forum. If you'd like to know more, please PM me. It's been traumatic. But hey - onwards and upwards. The new venue will be good. Sofas, real ale (cheaper than EDT prices), candles and flowers :) And Martin Carthy :) And we're negotiating for some mega top artists for 2009 :) -
How come I get tiny off-topic sentences zapped by admin within a zillionth of a second, and other posters get mega off-topic paragraphs allowed?? :-S This will probably also get zapped !!

The Blake mural has been painted over by the Council

I have also been copied into this as a result of my email to the Dulwich Society: Dear J The mural is on the wall that faces down over the playarea in Goose Green (Adys Road end). It has been there for at least a dozen years. I am not sure who painted it but it is/was very decorative and cheerful on an otherwise blank wall. But it is not in our area. I am happy to let the local Camberwell South councillors know what happened: they may be able to have it reinstated. M ----- Original Message ----- From: (name) To: (list of email addresses) Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2008 8:20 AM Subject: Goose Green Mural David has asked me to circulate this from Sue (surname) to you all to see if any of you know anything about it. It is not in our actual area but maybe you know something about it anyway. She originally approached Ian as chairman of the Dulwich Society. Regards Jean From: Sue Date: Sun, 21 Sep 2008 14:15:05 -0400 Subject: Blake Mural To: [email protected] Hi I don't know if your society covers East Dulwich, but if it does, are you aware that somebody - presumably the council - has painted over a large part of this mural at the end of Goose Green? I am absolutely horrified. Sue (name and address) -
The Blake mural has been painted over by the Council
Sue replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've received a reply from Bimal which presumably has been overtaken by the council statement, but there are bits in it I find quite funny and it does shed some light on the way things get done in councils :)) Hi Sue, Thanks for your inquiry and before I get into the details there are a couple matters I need to clear up in regards to Katherines posted message onto he East Dulwich Forum website : 1) We did have a brief chat however she had very much quoted me out of context in the sense that matters were in hand and that I was leading. 2) Ahead of any decision or forward plan an investigation must take place to establish the following - Rightful ownership of the property : it is suggested that the wall in question is privately owned and with this being a possibility a disclaimer or authorisation must be obtained from the rightful owner of the wall, in order to consider options which I will go over following the statutory guidance I feel must be clarified - At the same time we need to establish which business unit manager in the council authorised the graffiti cover up and created the current state of half mural half blue touch up....currently all managers I have contacted to seek their accountability in the decision have denied any responsibility for creating the current state of half mural/half graffiti cover up - Once this is established we would be able to establish a lead officer/department and identify necessary stakeholders to support the foreward plan - The lead and partners will need to carry out consultation with community/councillors/officers and interested parties based upon the outcome of the discussion with property owners authorisation of "what to do" about the current state of half mural half cover up - The lead and partners will have to secure funding and then the project can be delivered with current options being : 1) Paint the entire mural again 2) Touch up only the bit that has been covered up to again have a complete mural 3) Cover up the entire wall to create uniformity in appearance with the remainder of the property 4) Alternative suggestion from local members is to utilise the space as a "graffiti wall" as this was suggested to be a better option that having a work of art disgrased by constant environmental abuse and anti-social behaviour related to "tagging" 5) Seek alternative options with stakeholders and interested community members for consideration to take back to property owners It unfortunately, is not a simple process, and certain levels of responsibility from managers need to be established ahead of any action. I will not be leading on this as per Katherines assumption, as I will be leaving Southwark council in the next two weeks and I can almost certainly say that the aforementioned processes and legal/statutory obligations would not be fulfilled within my contracted time towards resignation from my post. I hope this is somewhat helpful and as I learn more from the site visit that our parks department officers have promised to carry out today : to establish owners views on the plan to rectify the half state of the mural, I will keep Katherine and relative stakeholders informed as best I can. Kind Regards, B -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Sue Sent: 23 September 2008 23:47 To: Kotecha, Bimal Subject: The Blake mural Hi Bimal I know that Katherine has been in touch with you about the mural as a result of my original email to her, and I would be very grateful if you could let me know what is the outcome of the discussions about this. The mural is a much-loved feature of East Dulwich - or at least it was, before half of it was painted blue Best wishes Sue -
Who bought tickets for Dick Gaughan at the EDT?
Sue replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I haven't heard from anybody who might have bought these tickets. I know it's ultimately the EDT's responsibility, but the Goose does not want unhappy punters who turn up to the EDT for an enjoyable evening and then find the event has moved somewhere else. It reflects on us even though the move was not our choice. It's possible the ticket buyers weren't from East Dulwich, as they may have travelled to the EDT for one of our folk evenings and bought them over the bar then, but please, if you know anyone who could possibly have bought them, could you ask them if they did - thanks. If we can't trace them we will just have to leave a message for them at the EDT bar on the evening in question and hope it's conveyed ... -

I have emailed Bimal Kotecha (see above) and asked him to let me know the outcome of the council's discussions with the vicarage tomorrow. I'll post on here as soon as I have any news. Won't be till after tomorrow night though as I'm out all day and evening. -
The Blake mural has been painted over by the Council
Sue replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have received this: Dear I've spoken with my colleague Bimal Kotecha in the Public Realm section who deals with this area. He tells me that as the mural is on private property, there there will have been an agreement between the vicarage and the council to carry out this painting. The Parks team are going to visit the vicarage on Wednesday to agree what will happen with the wall, i.e whether the mural will be restored. If you have any further questions, Bimal can be contacted directly on 020 7525 0814 or [email protected]. Thank you very much for contacting us about this. Regards Katherine Edited again to remove reference to the Dulwich Society as I realised the above was not in response to my email to them but to an email to someone else, duh. -

This may seem a stupid question, but why don't you all change to a different surgery? Dulwich Medical Centre in Crystal Palace Road isn't perfect, but it sure as hell sounds better than the one you're all going to!!

This is disgraceful. I loved the mural too, and I love Blake. Does anyone have an email address or a link to anywhere I can add my voice to the complaints? Edit: Ooops sorry just seen someone has directed people to email addresses ..... Edited again: But where is the Local Info page of the forum?? Can't see it anywhere??
