  1. The kitchen equipment shop near goose green closed because of a rent increase. The owner was very bitter (I spoke to him) because he was making money ie the shop was profitable but would not be still profitable after the rent went up. The shop was empty for a long time (and maybe still I haven't looked for a while) so the landlord seemed to have miscalculated. Right now, heading into a depression, would seem a bad time to demand higher rents. Possibly more likely that the downturn, combined with more bigger and therefore more expensive premises, is just too much for them. Or maybe something else entirely different.
  2. southwark day centre for refugees: based in the Copleston Centre. http://www.sdcas.org.uk They run a creche and provide meals. They also distribute children's clothes and toys.
  3. The police and community volunteers do Community Road Watch near this point for just this reason. You can find out more and join in by contacting [email protected]
  4. contact your councillor and explain what is happening.
  5. TfL license taxis in London https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/taxis-and-private-hire/. You could contact them and establish the acceptability of padding the fare like this.
  6. I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours -- crossing at the Barry Road/Lordship Lane lights (coming from Barry Road) woman hooted at me to set off when there was a Q of turning traffic in front of me, undertook me at the narrow point at the lights so close that I nearly fell off and as she went by screamed at me "go and cycle in the park" Anger management issues :)
  7. That is good news. It seems to take more effort than most people put into waste disposal -- but being able to recycle them is the first step. Disposable nappies too now https://www.thebalancesmb.com/knowaste-recycles-absorbent-hygiene-products-2877867
  8. I don't think Southwark does consumer facing waste bins ie things that look like rubbish bins but say recycling only or similar. They used to some time ago but maybe gave up because (like all the other similar bins I've ever seen) they were filled by miscellaneous rubbish. I think Veolia sort the park bin rubbish for recycling. You could check this with your local councillor. Disposable cups are a different problem (which you have solved personally with the keep-cup) because they are not re-cyclable at all (they are a mix of paper and plastic which can't be separated). Some cafes use paper cups inside and out which seems terrible to me -- presumably it saves on the washing up. All you can do about that is not use them and tell your friends.
  9. I use mine in my kitchen bin. Many of these are scammy -- misusing the names of good causes etc.
  10. I have something of yours -- found on Surrey Canal Path. PM me and I'll send it back
  11. Depending on how long you will be looking after the children you probably should look into registering as a child minder with the Care Inspectorate. http://www.careinspectorate.com/index.php/register-a-care-service/register-a-childminding-service The site says: Childminders must, by law, register with the Care Inspectorate. The legal definition of a childminder is a person who works with children for more than 2 hours a day in the childminders own home for reward.
  12. remember that in a fire you may want to get out
  13. Is there a photo attached? That is meant to be the proof that you did it. If there is no photo or no signs then take some photos yourself showing that what you did is permitted and appeal within the time limit. Be careful because the grounds for appeal are limited to relevant matters -- things like "I've done this for years" etc would not be grounds for appeal but if there are poorly sited signs (or no signs) or the photo does not show that you did anything wrong then you can appeal. It's possible that this has always been banned and the camera has only just been installed. It's also possible that it's not correct.
  14. People don't always lose by sharing. There's a Fun Fair in Burgess Park at the moment. Huge, noisy etc. Some of the money brought in by that may be spent in Peckham Rye Park -- we've just had a new playground which is very popular and ugly tarmacked areas have been grassed over -- gone forever. Maybe it's our turn to make money to benefit others. Free firework displays save lives -- surely good even if we don't go to them ourselves.
  15. your local councillor

This can be an enjoyable occupation carried out under police protection. It's called Community Speedwatch and is organised jointly by the Met, TfL and members of the community (ie you and/or ANO). You (the volunteer or ANO) is trained to use a speedgun. You have to wear hi-vis and stand in a prominent position (must give these speeders a chance) and then call out the numbers you see on the gun to the policeman who writes them down with the make and registration no of the vehicle. Drivers then get rude letters about the calibre of their driving and warnings to improve it. To join in email [email protected]. His photo is attached. He's a very nice, affable guy with a strong desire to protect the elderly, vulnerable and children by improving standards on the roads.
  17. ring 0207 525 2000 and you will get the council environmental call cente. This is environmental crime. Could be any sort of dangerous waste in there.
  18. there is a great deal of bike parking at the Elephant and Castle around the back of the Bakerloo station. The whole area is covered 24/7 by South Bank Uni security who have people on the road between the University buildings (which is part of a major cycle route) Anyone wanting advice or assistance to do this journey by bike should email [email protected] (can be slow) tweet @southwarkcycle or text 07842 640 207 rahrahrah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > ... or, there is loads of space around Elephant > tube and a lot of development (with Section 106 to > be leveraged); Southwark could have built a secure > bike park like the one at Finsbury Park. 20. But the food caddy collection is stll free, yes?
  21. Southwark Council ia not responsible for Brexit.
  22. This is what I was told when I discussed being tail-gated on my bike by cars with threateningly loud, revving engines. I had always told myself that the driver didn't mean to threaten me -- they were just unable to control their car -- I'm not sure that either was re-assuring. And yes, I was told (possibly by exdulwicher) that a good driver should be able to not do this exdulwicher Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > seenbeen Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > someone should remind the speeding > cyclists....I'm > > dreading the new 'healthy streets'. > > It's quite astonishing how there can be complaints > about being held up by cyclists (and there always > are - the usual rants about how someone was "stuck > behind" them while they trundled away at 10mph for > miles upon miles) while there are also complaints > about speeding cyclists.
