  1. Most people consider themselves above average drivers https://www.psychologicalscience.org/news/motr/when-it-comes-to-driving-most-people-think-their-skills-are-above-average.html
  2. there must be a reason why the people behind this are not disclosing their names. This thread doesn't reach everyone in ED (or even probably a high proportion) but no one is coming forward to say "it's me/us". They are well-defended but not by people with names. The posters are being put up in shops but the owners of the shops disclaim all knowledge of whose they are. That seems weird to me but shop-keepers want all their customers and 25% voted for a CPZ. that's one reason I thought of -- it could be wrong -- I couldn't think of another but I expect others can.
  3. write to your councillor, copy to Richard Livingstone, complaining that the council is re-publishing and may be taking notice of the views of an organisation which appears to have no substance ie no name/address/email/twitter etc. I think they must have given more detail to the council otherwise they could not have received any opinion from them ie the opinions of this group must have been sent by email or by post. If by email then there will be an email address, if by post then I would assume some sort of signature and address and phone no. However, if the council persists without explanation (they might say that given the level of confrontation and hostility on this issue the shopkeepers who comprise it fear a boycott if their names are published) then I would start to use the council's complaints procedure which rapidly escalates to the Local Government Ombudsman.
  4. The wardens take photos and the person penalised can ask to see them. If they wish to challenge the meaning of "adjacent" this could be a first step
  5. I went to the closing down sale of the kitchen shop at the Goose Green end of LL. I asked the owner why he was closing. He said taht the landlord believed that he could get a much higher rent. He said his shop was profitable but wouldn't be at the higher rent so he had no option but to close. He was losing his livelihood. I haven't looked recently but for a long time the shop was empty and the economic situation hasn't got any better. edanna Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I think it?s exorbitant rents that are the biggest > risk to independents. > > > NewWave Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > Either way its the death knell for our local > > buisnesses and characterful high street. > > brace yourselves for more independent traders > > closing and LL full of chain stores chain > > restaurants and estate agents. > > I saw it happen in North Kensington despite > > widespread opposition by residents and traders > > alike.
  6. Election literature is required to carry a name and address so that those responsible can be known and held to account if, for instance, the literature is racist or fraudulent. it seems good practice to put contact details on other campaigning literature but it's not required by law. One of the basic purposes is to stop outside interference with elections (ie the Russian bots which seem to have interfered in the US). The internet makes this harder to police because so much is anonymous on-line. The anonymity seems to make it easier for people to be rude and abusive.
  7. Great no-packaging place in Nunhead which does olive oil and detergent (and lots of other things). It's next door to Goodcup, picture, description and review here https://gozerolondon.com/2019/01/26/bring-your-own/ It's very good
  8. Have a look at this https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/housing/renting-a-home/student-housing/students-in-private-rented-accommodation/student-housing-living-in-a-house-in-multiple-occupation-hmo/ It says students but it covers every place where more than one household is sharing at least one room ie a kitchen or a bathroom. A couple is a household. Two tenants who are friends rather than a couple are two households -- definition is to do with sharing bed, bank account, shopping, meals etc. Quite big fines. To some degree the rules are local ie depending on how much enforcement the LA is doing. So the advice above by GHlip is good. southwark property licensing here: https://www.southwark.gov.uk/business/licences/property-licensing?chapter=2 NB also the stuff at the end about applying for planning permission for a change of use. Your neighbours may worry about noise etc
  9. This is all I can find http://automototale.com/car-reviews/ulez-car-scrappage-scheme-how-much-could-you-get-off-your-next-vehicle/ It's a scrappage scheme but it seems to be aimed at small businesses and charities. Some manufacturers do trade-in deals which might be worth looking into. Car hire? taxis? It is expensive running a car -- easy to forget the overheads like insurance and maintenance and then the running costs seem neglible compared with the train. Older articles say the government considered a scrappage scheme but didn't go ahead with it.
  10. If utility drivers are rude to you then take their number, note the time, day and place and write to the company's head office or customer service. Gets good results and persuades drivers to be more polite. If enough people do it, then it will be included in their training.
  11. there are probably secondary things like brick colour and layout which are influenceable by local opinion. The council is influenced by public concerns ie a shortage of public housing and a tidal wave of homelessness. Serious local concerns about safety etc could influence it the other way.
  12. the consultation is closed but it's here. https://consultations.southwark.gov.uk/environment-leisure/athenlay-road-traffic-calming/ southwark are usually OK about late comments. Surprising that as a resident you were not notified. Mail your views to your councillor.
  13. you could approach Community Speedwatch [email protected] and ask them to do speed checks. If you can get details of the buses then TfL take complaints about buses and are supposed to be moving towards over-riders to limit them to the speedlimit -- which would be 20mph at this point.
  14. Buses are TfL. Contact your councillor but what are you asking them to do?
  15. Or you could go on the bus. Four bus routes run up the west side of the Rye and two run up the east side. The 78 and the P12 run to the northern tip. If you are a runner then you might consider it within walking distance of four railway stations: in distance order nearest first Peckham Rye, Nunhead, East Dulwich and Honor Oak. 16. you can buy them in Nunhead. You need a better local high street. Nunhead has an excellent independent supermarket, Ayers bakery, Sopers fish, a proper greengrocer, a proper butcher, a post office, a chemist/hardware shop, a bike repair shop and a great coffee shop. Why go anywhere else? snoopy17 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > You can't buy king Edwards in the local high > street.
  17. All traffic lights are managed by TfL.
  18. anyone can catch a train from East Dulwich to Tulse Hill -- takes 5 minutes. https://www.thetrainline.com/train-times/tulse-hill-to-east-dulwich
  19. I don't know -- depends how old you are now obviously :) -- but social change comes quite quickly I think -- it hits a tipping point. Even 2-3 years ago only the environmentalists (and the EU) talked about pollution. Now, here we are discussing it. Reminds me of the laws against drink driving in the 1970s -- probably hard for younger people to realise how hotly these were opposed -- death of the country pub "I drive better when I've had a few" "I know when I've had too many". i remember sitting (as a journalist) in a country magistrates court hearing one of the first cases of "drunk in charge of a car" against a salesman who had passed out in the driving seat of his car with his car keys in his hand. The magistrates apologised for having to take away his licence. The difference in public attitudes in that 50 years is overwhelming and it came quite quickly, I think. As you imply the young already care about pollution. My daughter and her husband chose their house because it was well away from the main road and pollution would be less. The argument is over.
  20. don't I remember a row about Boris Johnson redefining ED as an inner city area and thus raising its housing density?
  21. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health public health england "PHE medical director Paul Cosford told the BBC: "We should stop idling outside schools and we should make sure that children can walk or cycle to school." PHE said 28,000 to 36,000 deaths a year in the UK could be attributed to long-term exposure to air pollution."
  22. If your reason for opposing this scheme is that it is too small perhaps you would like to propose a larger scale scheme which you would support.
  23. what is being discussed is called a Parking Charge Notice because it is issued by a private company on private land. It is therefore a civil claim rather than a fine. If it is correctly issued by a company entitled to get your details from the DVLA and the notices are correctly displayed etc then you can be taken to court for debt and bailiffs can call to collect it. Advice here: What to do is here: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/law-and-courts/parking-tickets/appealing-parking-tickets/appealing-a-parking-ticket/
