East Dulwich Grove crossing - dangerous drivers!
Sally Eva replied to Lolamaxx's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
When impeded some traffic does go elsewhere but some traffic (ie some journeys)simply disappear. This is known as traffic evaporation and is easier to see in practice by considering new roads such as the M25. This increase in capacity made possible lots of new journeys. People could now make those new journeys and they made them. The result was more traffic than expected and a road which was congested from the moment it opened. Capacity creates traffic. The same thing happens in reverse (less pleasantly and more obviously) -- if a junction is made slower some people will wait in the queue, some people will drive around trying to find another way through -- and others will not make that journey by car. -
thanks Dirac, that's really nice to hear. I hope the Bike Train is fun. Fun and free A big chunk of it is off-road and another big chunk is on the segregated cycle lanes from the Elephant and Castle that you can see from the 63 bus. There is a bit of road-sharing with motors but I'm old and I scare easily so not too much of that. The map is here: if you feel you'd like to give it a go, you can PM on the forum, text me on 07842 640 207 or just turn up.

This link gives the opening times of the Bike Hub https://www.bromptonbikehire.com/docks/2735-peckhamrye There's a number to reserve a bike by text.

The Bike Hub in general (parking and maintenance) or the Brompton Hire lockers?
-
So many people have shown an interest in this thread that I feel I must add info about Brompton Bike Hire -- the link is here: https://www.bromptonbikehire.com And you can borrow a bike for a day from Evans Cycles (nearest branch East Dulwich Lane)-- you need to leave your credit card and passport (or similar). Free. http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/hire-a-bike-for-a-day-for-free/ Borrow a bike and ride it on the Bike Train: http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/bike-train-to-central-london-5/

Hi, it's first come, first served on the parking. It opens early. The parking is overlooked during the day because there is a mechanic there but you still need to lock it up properly (obviously). There are more bike stands behind McDonalds that always have space every time I look and more in the various approach roads. I spend time there from 8am occasionally, leafleting for the Bike Train, and there's always bike parking space. You can hire Bromptons at the Bike Hub. I don't know how it's done exactly sorry but I do know it costs ?2.50 a day and the bikes are in lockers in the Bike Hub.

southwark parking enforcement or a site called Fix My Street. I have found the parking enforcement very quick for parking on the pavement etc and Fix My Street very good for obstructions on the highway/potholes etc.

Take the letter and your rent statement to the CAB and ask them to help you find out what it means. You have taken your weekly rent into account, haven't you?

Dulwich Park - (dog) walkers and cyclists
Sally Eva replied to rendelharris's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Sue, are you in touch with Cycle Confident? The council funds them and they are very good. Once you are steady on your wheels Southwark cyclists do Saturday am social rides on quiet back streets and parks. We post them all in the What's On section. This saturday they are taking part in the national butterfly count and going from park to park counting butterflies. What could be nicer. When you start to feel up to it, get in touch or just turn up to one of our rides and enjoy them with us. The butterfly ride is here: http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/butterfly-count-peckham-healthy-ride/ ignore the picture -- I don't approve of thinking of cycling as medicinal. -

We could take you to the Elephant. That's on the same direct tube line and there's loads of bike parking around LSBU. There are nice backstreets routes to the Oval. I'm a Peckham girl so the routes I know all go down Rye Lane at some point -

there's a bike train from Denmark Hill and (separately) from Peckham Rye Station every Wednesday at 8.10am. the two rides meet in Burgess Park and go on together to Blackfriars. The pace is very peaceful and takes about another 20 minutes from Burgess Park. The route map is here: Everyone is welcome. The ride is escorted by experienced ride leaders. The route is chosen to be safe and top priority is arriving in a cheerful happy frame of mind. Gives a sense of achievement before 9am. We take people on individually to Hyde Park, Mayfair, Faringdon, Kings Cross and Tower Hill and we bring them back again. If you want to come, just turn up. If you want more info private message me, text me on 07842 640 207 or mail [email protected]. Never think about a train company again. -
Denmark Hill to Blackfriars
Sally Eva replied to MarianaTrench's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi southwark cyclists run a Bike Train from Denmark Hill station to Blackfriars with a branch to waterloo if that's where you want to go. We leave Peckham Rye station (from the bike stands behind McDonalds beside the station) at 8.10am and get to Blackfriars north side at 8.45am. We can easily peel a buddy rider off with you to Waterloo and you would arrive about the same time. if the times don't suit you then get in touch because we can arrange individual rides. Return rides are arranged individually on the day. Cyclists who have been doing the route with us for a few weeks start to manage their own rides home and after a while they are helping others and the whole thing is very jolly. We use a very safe route to get to the segregated routes at the Elephant. At no point is anyone sharing the road with a bus or a lorry. Most of the time there is a reassuring width of concrete between you and the nearest large vehicle. if you are interested private msge me or text me on 07842 640 207 and I can send you a map etc or you can come with us OR you could ride the bike train route this sunday am. Look on the "two social cycle rides this weekend...." thread in the What's on in ED chat group and you will see full info. Or again text me, look at southwarkcyclists.org.uk or just turn up -
Southwark Cyclists are running their Bike Train up to town on a Sunday so that this "bit of inside knowledge" (as one rider called it) can be shared as widely as possible. Starts 10am from where the Bike Train starts in Peckham -- by the bike stands behind McDonalds in Rye Lane. Expected to finish in the same place 12ish Ride Leader Bruce Lynn will take riders up to Blackfriars Bridge by the Bike Train route of two parks, a traffic-calmed backstreet, the cycling lanes on the New Kent Road, the Elephant and Castle by-pass and then the lovely new cycle lanes over the river. He will (probably) then sweep west along the segregated route on the Embankment to Westminster. At Westminster Bridge he's got a choice He may turn right and head for St James' Park and Birdcage Walk (maybe do a circuit when the roads are closed to traffic on a Sunday). Or he may turn over the bridge and come back along the south bank, past the Eye, the Festival Hall, the National Theatre etc. Or both. What he will choose will probably depend on the weather and what everyone wants to do. All welcome. Bring bigger kids or have a nice time without them. You can let us know you are coming or just turn up.

Interested in cycle to work in the City?
Sally Eva replied to jonsuissy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi, Southwark cyclists run weekly taster rides from Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill and Nunhead Stations up to Blackfriars, Faringdon, Westminster and Mayfair. The idea is to use the safest possible route to get to the new segregated cycle lanes from the Elephant and Castle onwards. The rides, known as the Bike Train, set off from Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill Stations at 8.10am and get to Blackfriars at 8.45am. We take riders on from there individually to Faringdon, Mayfair and Westminster (only if they want to go, of course). The whole she-bang is free etc and we can tailor it to suit your personal ride. Rides back are arranged individually. The route goes through two parks, a traffic calmed back street, the pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road, the Elephant and Castle by-pass and then the new segregated lanes. The next Wednesday Bike Train is this Wednesday May 11th. If you are interested get in touch Sally -
Does anyone know about carol singing in Lordship Lane this year? Is there anything anyone can join?
