There are adverts for paid-for cycle training popping up on the forum if you live work or breathe in Southwark you can get free cycle training here: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200123/cycling/446/cycle_training/1

During strikes they generally close the mail boxes physically ie obstruct the slot. I think they have given up on the "next collection" labels. Part of the un-civilising of every day life. Ditto 9am collections and second deliveries

It would be a step. Removing space between the two lanes of traffic makes both slow down because they are worried about crashing into one another. Lots of roads have wide cross hatching between the two lanes or a central reservation. Just makes the traffic more confident. It's like the old joke about new road safety feature for motor cars -- a spike in the middle of the steering wheel. Instead we have done the opposite and made cars safer and safer to be inside and more and more dangerous to be outside.

OTOH remove all the road markings and the traffic will slow down was tried on Exhibition Road. Apparently it works once for every driver. They had to put the road markings back. On Exhibition Road they enormously widened the pavement so that only about a third of the road was left for two-way traffic. That worked a bit because the cars were afraid of banging into one another. But pedestrians wandering all over the road because it all seemed to be pavement -- did that work? You bet your life it did not. Drive hard at a pedestrian and it jumps out of your way and all the others don't try it.

The trouble with average speed cameras is that "on average" speeds across London are very low. The speed limit through Peckham along Peckham Road is 20mph. Drivers are probably lucky to average 5mph because they spend so much time stationary at the lights. However when they pass the last set of traffic lights (or the set before that if they see green lights ahead of them) their speeds suddenly take off to about 50mph which is far too much on a densely packed shopping street. So average speed cameras will need to be placed very carefully and frequently and there will need to be lots of them. On well known race tracks like the OKR may be but even there average speed (including waiting at traffic lights) is probably quite low. It's the racing in between the lights which is the problem and the manoeuvring at speed between lanes and average speed cameras unless very frequent indeed will not capture that. Legislation to install technology in cars to limit speed -- yes, amen to that. Also changes in car gearing so that they work efficiently in low gears and at low speeds. Cars moving slowly frequently sound as though their drivers are having difficulty controlling them because the gearing is designed for 0-60 in 30 seconds rather than 20mph for long periods.

We've laid the Train up in the sidings for the Winter and we're considering our warm weather timetable for 2017 We would like to know what you, our users and non-users, think of our service. I know all surveys say "this will take less than 10 minutes of your time" but don't admit that these will be the 10 most boring and pointless minutes of your life. This survey has only 7 questions :) https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/W6F89CN

There's one in Peckham Rye Park in the car park beside the cafe. Bag up the clothes. Most people don't and so the clothes end up in a big jumble which is hard for the men emptying the rag bank to handle. One really filthy thing then contaminates everything else. Keep the bags small or they won't go into the chute. -
It is an entry and exit for cyclists. The toucan lights enable them to cross into the park and the yellow box would enables them to turn from and to Friern Road. I don't know that this is the reason but cyclists are road users who benefit from the yellow box.

The bus route doesn't make a difference. Westward Hill is a bus route as is Peckham Rye on the west side. Both are 20mph and have 20mph speed cameras. The one on Westward Hill has a camera in it and buses palpably slow down when going through it (and then speed up again). Buses frequently don't obey speed limits but they are not exempt. The need to reduce speeds is well-known but efforts to do it are met with cries about "the war on the motorist". Those wanting reduced speeds need to be equally vocal.

One of the community councils (probably Dulwich) organised a community speedwatch on Barry Road https://www.communityspeedwatch.co.uk This found that speeds were quite high, which would not have surprised any residents, I suspect, but surprised the police. I guess that when they drive around a bubble of well-behaved driving forms around them and they (quite reasonably) do not appreciate how drivers drive when not being observed. The safe route for cyclists up and down this hill is Friern Road (next road south of Barry Road) or via Landells Road (and some wiggles) to Crystal Palace Road and points down that side. I have walked Barry Road but the pollution is filthy and the speeds unpleasant so I would usually take the bus if my bike was out of action.

One of the community councils (dulwich?) did a community speed watch operation there http://communityspeedwatch.co.uk This showed high speeds which is what I am sure we would all expect. The police however were surprised. I guess that if you drive around in a police car the traffic becomes well behaved for a short distance around you and driver curb their speeds etc. The speed limit on this road would be 20mph. If you are a cyclist the safe alternative is Friern Road (the next uphill road to the south of Barry Road. Another route up (for cyclists) is via Landells Road.

https://www.fixmystreet.com this is a public interest site which allows people to report problems in the street to their council. At least some parts of it (Street cleaning and Street furniture)are monitored by southwark staff. This might be a good place to start. Pictures are very helpful but I have found the response rate good

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/7CSGMYT Southwark's Overview and Scrutiny Committee is carrying out an investigation into the problems relating to peak-time travel across the borough. We want to know about those issues, big and small, which make it difficult for you to get to work or get the kids to school in the morning. Are there bus stops where people just can't get on the bus because it's always to crowded? Is it difficult getting in and out of your train station at peak times? Are there cycling routes which you feel are unsafe? We also want to get your positive suggestions for improvement. Could extending a bus route a little further link up the local transport network? Could more be done to relieve congestion on the roads? Southwark Council does not have direct control over many of the issues which will come up, but the council does have significant influence. Southwark Scrutiny will engage with various organisations, including the new Mayor and TfL to bring these problems to the fore, and see if more can be done to resolve them.

I was a bit surprised to read this on the government website: You must register to vote if you?re asked to do so and you meet the conditions for registering, eg you?re 16 or over and you?re British or a national of an EU or Commonwealth country. If you?re asked to register and don?t do so, your local Electoral Registration Office could fine you ?80. so you don't have to vote but you do have to go on the electoral register if asked. It will have been agreed by Parliament so I don't think it could be called undemocratic -

http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/faq/voting-and-registration/what-is-individual-electoral-registration seems consistent with this (above) -- caused by a change in the electoral registration rules. Perhaps he didn't explain himself very clearly -
Best cycling route - from Peckham to Bloomsbury with child in tow
Sally Eva replied to Babbelina's topic in The Lounge
That is fine. You are going just north of the British Museum and there is a backstreets way from Blackfriars Road to the BM. And Blackfriars Road, of course, is segregated down to the E&C. And it's easy, safe, pretty etc to get to the E&C from East Dulwich. Have you got the TfL cycling maps? Otherwise get a map and start from the north side of Blackfriars Bridge, take my word for it that getting to this point is easy and fun. the Bike Train map is here: Last time I did the bit from Blackfriars to the BM, we went up Fleet Street and turned right up chancery lane, left to Lincolns Inn and up to the north-west corner. Straight across Kingsway, first left (Newton St) a bit of pavement around and across High Holborn (legal) then Bury Place to the BM and Montague St. I take it you are alright from there. If you want to do it with someone you could come on the Bike Train one Weds and we could take you on to the BM. PM me for further info/alternative arrangements -

those concerned about speed might be interested in this: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/safety-and-security/road-safety/community-roadwatch it operates in Southwark. volunteers supervised by police operate handheld speed cameras and people breaking the speed limit get letters reminding them about it. Second time they get a penalty.
