  1. sorry, I'm probably out of date. I don't watch TV or go to the cinema much so I don't see adverts for cars. What I am trying to say is that cars are advertised for speed (or were last time I noticed) and that, in practice, it is impossible in London to do these speeds and this causes frustration which finds an outlet in dangerous overtaking. Brief bursts of dangerous speed in other words
  2. I don't think I'm talking so much about the power of the car as the gearing -- it's the 0-60 in 30 seconds bit -- drivers almost can't drive at 20mph without their engine making a terrible noise -- it's longing to go faster -- if they go up a gear the engine in tugging at them. There's no comfortable place in which to do 20mph. It's quite hard to drive slowly, and it shouldn't be. Quite small cars are geared like this, I think.
  3. I wonder if it's because cars are designed (and sold) on their power and acceleration. People buy them -- and then all that power and acceleration is useless to them. These statistics are a few years old http://www.itv.com/news/london/update/2012-11-19/tfl-average-traffic-speeds-are-less-than-20-mph-in-london/ but they show that the average speed across London is less than 20mph and across central London less than 10mph. What use is a car that does 0-60 in under 30 seconds? Even the most brainless petrol head must get some suspicion that he is paying a lot to get an advantage over someone else and he's just not getting his money's worth. So all that frustration comes out. He'll show you............ Forget about him and have a peaceful evening
  4. The other approach is not to buy second-hand mobile phones. Gumtree is a good source of doubtful phones. And don't hand over cash for second-hand mobiles in McDonalds -- people do, you'd be surprised. What would not surprise anyone is that such mobiles stop working soon after purchase and the mobile phone on which the buyer contacted the vendor doesn't work any more and the buyer has no address, landline etc. The police are no help -- they consider the above to be a variation on receiving stolen goods.
  5. Lewisham cyclists do this sort of thing. Train out to Kent and then cycle around. Or Southwark Cyclists Healthy Rides -- those may be more pootling than you want -- they are slow and easy paced around local backstreets and central London. Have you looked at Skyrides which include children if you want to take them with you?
  6. Am I misunderstanding something? Are we talking about Red Post Hill? The 37 goes along this road for about 50m. this 50m is largely non-residential having the station and the bridge and tracks underneath the road on either side. The value of the properties alongside the road is just not relevant. People in cheap houses -- even public rented housing -- have children and gardens and like to sleep at night. How much anyone paid for their property and whether they have lost money on it (hypothetically) is simply not relevant. The money doesn't buy exemption from the needs of others. The poor have more understanding of this than those who are used to buying their own way. That's all.
  7. "I can't imagine why someone would pay ?1.5m to live on a street with three buses (and one of them a night bus) trundling down it daily!" Some people use buses and therefore would not be offended by a street with 3 buses (one of them a night bus) trundling down it daily. Maybe people with ?1.5m to spend on a house don't use buses but other people do. When you spend ?1.5m you buy the house and the garden but not control over the road outside. Other people are still permitted to use it and even poor people on buses are permitted to be driven along it. Trying to see other people's point of view (see RH's post) can be very liberating and even re-assuring. The noise is not an attack on your entitlement to peace and quiet. It is the sound of other people going about their legitimate business.
  8. What do Bike Trainers and maybe-Bike Trainers think of the Bike Train? The answers are here: http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/bike-train-survey-results/
  9. when I was young, when a car broke down and had to be pushed out of the way, other drivers would get out of their cars and help. Nowadays etc Mind you that was a long time ago
  10. Permanent residence is slightly more complicated than living here for 5 years. You have to have been exercising Treaty Rights for 5 years continuously and be able to prove it. Exercising Treaty Rights means working, looking for work, being a self-sufficient student or a self-sufficient person. Self-sufficient means not claiming state benefits and having comprehensive health insurance (not the NHS).I think an EHIC card is acceptable under some circumstances but that's something to check.
  11. There are adverts for paid-for cycle training popping up on the forum if you live work or breathe in Southwark you can get free cycle training here: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200123/cycling/446/cycle_training/1

  13. During strikes they generally close the mail boxes physically ie obstruct the slot. I think they have given up on the "next collection" labels. Part of the un-civilising of every day life. Ditto 9am collections and second deliveries
  14. If you have three cyclists in the house you will be saving so much money you can take taxis everywhere you don't cycle

  18. It would be a step. Removing space between the two lanes of traffic makes both slow down because they are worried about crashing into one another. Lots of roads have wide cross hatching between the two lanes or a central reservation. Just makes the traffic more confident. It's like the old joke about new road safety feature for motor cars -- a spike in the middle of the steering wheel. Instead we have done the opposite and made cars safer and safer to be inside and more and more dangerous to be outside.
  19. OTOH remove all the road markings and the traffic will slow down was tried on Exhibition Road. Apparently it works once for every driver. They had to put the road markings back. On Exhibition Road they enormously widened the pavement so that only about a third of the road was left for two-way traffic. That worked a bit because the cars were afraid of banging into one another. But pedestrians wandering all over the road because it all seemed to be pavement -- did that work? You bet your life it did not. Drive hard at a pedestrian and it jumps out of your way and all the others don't try it.
  20. Any way that's not why I came looking for this thread and brought it back to life. These are the dates for the Speedwatch programme discussed further up the thread. Here called Road Watch. 21. The trouble with average speed cameras is that "on average" speeds across London are very low. The speed limit through Peckham along Peckham Road is 20mph. Drivers are probably lucky to average 5mph because they spend so much time stationary at the lights. However when they pass the last set of traffic lights (or the set before that if they see green lights ahead of them) their speeds suddenly take off to about 50mph which is far too much on a densely packed shopping street. So average speed cameras will need to be placed very carefully and frequently and there will need to be lots of them. On well known race tracks like the OKR may be but even there average speed (including waiting at traffic lights) is probably quite low. It's the racing in between the lights which is the problem and the manoeuvring at speed between lanes and average speed cameras unless very frequent indeed will not capture that. Legislation to install technology in cars to limit speed -- yes, amen to that. Also changes in car gearing so that they work efficiently in low gears and at low speeds. Cars moving slowly frequently sound as though their drivers are having difficulty controlling them because the gearing is designed for 0-60 in 30 seconds rather than 20mph for long periods.
  22. We've laid the Train up in the sidings for the Winter and we're considering our warm weather timetable for 2017 We would like to know what you, our users and non-users, think of our service. I know all surveys say "this will take less than 10 minutes of your time" but don't admit that these will be the 10 most boring and pointless minutes of your life. This survey has only 7 questions :) https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/W6F89CN
  23. I want to see a red kite in London, competing with the foxes for roadkill and takeaways
  24. There's one in Peckham Rye Park in the car park beside the cafe. Bag up the clothes. Most people don't and so the clothes end up in a big jumble which is hard for the men emptying the rag bank to handle. One really filthy thing then contaminates everything else. Keep the bags small or they won't go into the chute.
  25. It is an entry and exit for cyclists. The toucan lights enable them to cross into the park and the yellow box would enables them to turn from and to Friern Road. I don't know that this is the reason but cyclists are road users who benefit from the yellow box.
