Homestall Road Water leak APPEAL: Black ice crash
Sally Eva replied to missmack1981's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Councillor Hamvas has told me that Thames Water have confirmed they will start to reinstate the water damaged road surface on Homestall Road on the 10th March and the works should be completed by the 13th March. -
Yes, the private nursery and prep school probably have a school run -- pretty small I would have thought. I'm just puzzled by this because I use Lyndhurst Way at all times of the day and it always seems to have lots of speeding through traffic with no particular problems around Harris, the Villa or around Oliver Goldsmith at school in and out times.
-
Harris is a secondary school. Very few teens (IMO) will allow themselves to be taken to school by their parents even if the parents want to do it (why?) Do you mean Oliver Goldsmith school in Peckham Road? There isn't a school in Southampton Way though OG is on the corner. OG is a state primary and has a local catchment area. It's not a highly regarded school and therefore the catchment are will be very local. There will be a school run but it is probably early and small.

which school are you thinking of?

Homestall Road Water leak APPEAL: Black ice crash

I'm sure that Renata's words will carry weight. Another way is to complain is to use Fix My Street. I think Southwark use this as a sort of quality audit. When I complain about a pothole or rubbish or most other things, I get a response from Southwark that it will be looked into and four weeks later a reminder from Fix My Street to check whether the whatever-it-was is fixed and if not to complain again. So it's a sort of self-checking system -

cycle lanes are frequently put inside parked cars because of the risk of "car dooring" -- this happens when a driver opens his or her car door in front of a cyclist. In the best case scenario the cyclist falls off. In a worst case scenario the cyclist falls off and a car too close behind runs him or her over. Putting the cycle lane inside the parked cars removes option 2.

We're running one of our monthly Bike Trains up to central London and points north, this Wednesday Jan 18th. full details, times, etc are on the What's On bit of the forum or on the Southwark Cyclists website. You can pm me for further info or text/phone me on 07842 640 207. The weather forecast is pretty good at the moment. Cold but sunny. Should be light going up and we can arrange return rides (with warning) but you would need lights to come home and a lock to make sure you have a bike to come home on -

I've read the CofE letter. What it says is that works which "go beyond what is clearly identified by the Faculty Jurisdiction Rules as not requiring Faculty approval may require to be approved by the Faculty". It doesn't say these works do go beyond the FJR. It says that works may require a faculty if they go beyond the rules. I think that is self-evident. If FJR is clearly broken then a Faculty will be needed. If it is not clearly broken then it may not (or it may). Then the church is concerned about public controversy, the best solution to which may be a Faculty hearing because this allows both sides to argue their case. The writer does not make any judgement either on the need for a Faculty or the outcome of a Faculty hearing. -

It sounds racist but in fairness I don't think it is -- if you google it you get some sort of urban myth about a black card which Nando's are supposed to sell or offer which gives free Nando's meals etc for a year (or similar) -

Southwark has reset several speed cameras to 20mph. You can tell which ones they are. They have 20 signs underneath the little picture of a camera on the warning signs and the marks on the road have been recalibrated. You can also tell by the behaviour of drivers who slow for the 20mph cameras which are signed 20 and have been recalibrated but do not slow for the 20mph cameras which are marked 20 but have not been recalibrated. The speed camera on Westwood Hill (the road to Crystal Palace) is marked 20 and has been recalibrated. -

take the bus number, route time, etc and report it to TfL there is a complaints page with a special section for buses. You get a personal response a few days later. Keep doing it. They are under pressure from their bosses to follow timetables. These timetables need to stick to 20mph timings. That may mean more buses so pressure will be needed. You can apply it. Also it would be terrible, selfish driving from anyone at all so you can apply the same principle to white vans with an employer's name on them etc Best Wishes -
This close passing of cyclists (sometimes within touching distance) is against the Highway Code but very difficult to enforce. West Midlands Police ran traps to catch drivers doing this. A cycling policeman in plain clothes but with a video camera on his helmet cycled peacefully along and when dangerously overtaken he radioed to his uniformed mates further up the road who stopped the driver. Their remit was to warn him about the close passing but at the same time they found that such drivers often had no tax, insurance, MOT or driving licence. The Met are planning to copy this. They are still working out the finer details (like how and where to do it).

"Out of rush hour this system is virtually empty." yes indeed it is. So traffic what traffic there is expects to go fast. commercial drivers use this route as a cut through between Peckham High Street and East Dulwich Lane. Cuts off a big congested corner. these same drivers are counting on the time saving and want to go fast. If you get in their way, they shout, hoot, try and weave around and generally are unpleasant. Experienced cyclists know that however threatening such behaviour is, it does not normally escalate to physical contact and can therefore be ignored. But beginning cyclists do not know this and are frightened and upset -- which is the purpose of this behaviour. It's no good going "I've been cycling for years in London and I'm not frightened". Maybe not, but many people are -- and consequently don't use the Gyratory.
-
I run the Bike Train. I would never take new cyclists round Bellenden Gyratory. I use it once a week -- unavoidably and out of the rush hour -- and every time some unpleasant driver who wants to go that little bit faster cuts me up. I understand that others aren't frightened and upset but I am. I'm an experienced female cyclist who has been cycling in London for years. Bellenden Gyratory is a place I would go a long way to avoid if it were possible. ed_pete Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > mikeb Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > DiD - I'm a cyclist and I disagree: the one-way > > system is easy - 11 years commuting through it > and > > I've never felt threatened. > > Same here any tinkering with this junction is a > waste of money as far as I can see from a cycling > perspective and just likely to aggravate the > driving community even further. > Cycle journeys don't start and end with this > one-way system. It's not the time of year to push cycling as an alternative, I know, but on Wednesday we are running one of our rare Winter Bike Trains. Full details are on the whats'on thread. The weather forecast for as far ahead as Wednesday is a bit meaningless but it's not actually bad at the moment. If you are interested in the WBT or want help cycling anywhere else because of the strike(s) you can text me on 07842 640 207 or pm me any time -

Another ill-thought out council plan....
Sally Eva replied to Rockets's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I knew (slightly) someone who worked in the Bradenham block on the albany Road. It was very difficult to park around the block. In great indignation she told me that she had driven from her home (in East Dulwich) driven around the Bradenham area FOR HALF AN HOUR and then had to go home and catch a bus. Not many buses on that route -
