One of the community councils (probably Dulwich) organised a community speedwatch on Barry Road https://www.communityspeedwatch.co.uk This found that speeds were quite high, which would not have surprised any residents, I suspect, but surprised the police. I guess that when they drive around a bubble of well-behaved driving forms around them and they (quite reasonably) do not appreciate how drivers drive when not being observed. The safe route for cyclists up and down this hill is Friern Road (next road south of Barry Road) or via Landells Road (and some wiggles) to Crystal Palace Road and points down that side. I have walked Barry Road but the pollution is filthy and the speeds unpleasant so I would usually take the bus if my bike was out of action.

One of the community councils (dulwich?) did a community speed watch operation there http://communityspeedwatch.co.uk This showed high speeds which is what I am sure we would all expect. The police however were surprised. I guess that if you drive around in a police car the traffic becomes well behaved for a short distance around you and driver curb their speeds etc. The speed limit on this road would be 20mph. If you are a cyclist the safe alternative is Friern Road (the next uphill road to the south of Barry Road. Another route up (for cyclists) is via Landells Road.

https://www.fixmystreet.com this is a public interest site which allows people to report problems in the street to their council. At least some parts of it (Street cleaning and Street furniture)are monitored by southwark staff. This might be a good place to start. Pictures are very helpful but I have found the response rate good

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/7CSGMYT Southwark's Overview and Scrutiny Committee is carrying out an investigation into the problems relating to peak-time travel across the borough. We want to know about those issues, big and small, which make it difficult for you to get to work or get the kids to school in the morning. Are there bus stops where people just can't get on the bus because it's always to crowded? Is it difficult getting in and out of your train station at peak times? Are there cycling routes which you feel are unsafe? We also want to get your positive suggestions for improvement. Could extending a bus route a little further link up the local transport network? Could more be done to relieve congestion on the roads? Southwark Council does not have direct control over many of the issues which will come up, but the council does have significant influence. Southwark Scrutiny will engage with various organisations, including the new Mayor and TfL to bring these problems to the fore, and see if more can be done to resolve them.

Southwark council wants our NI number!

I was a bit surprised to read this on the government website: You must register to vote if you?re asked to do so and you meet the conditions for registering, eg you?re 16 or over and you?re British or a national of an EU or Commonwealth country. If you?re asked to register and don?t do so, your local Electoral Registration Office could fine you ?80. so you don't have to vote but you do have to go on the electoral register if asked. It will have been agreed by Parliament so I don't think it could be called undemocratic -

http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/faq/voting-and-registration/what-is-individual-electoral-registration seems consistent with this (above) -- caused by a change in the electoral registration rules. Perhaps he didn't explain himself very clearly -
Best cycling route - from Peckham to Bloomsbury with child in tow
Sally Eva replied to Babbelina's topic in The Lounge
That is fine. You are going just north of the British Museum and there is a backstreets way from Blackfriars Road to the BM. And Blackfriars Road, of course, is segregated down to the E&C. And it's easy, safe, pretty etc to get to the E&C from East Dulwich. Have you got the TfL cycling maps? Otherwise get a map and start from the north side of Blackfriars Bridge, take my word for it that getting to this point is easy and fun. the Bike Train map is here: Last time I did the bit from Blackfriars to the BM, we went up Fleet Street and turned right up chancery lane, left to Lincolns Inn and up to the north-west corner. Straight across Kingsway, first left (Newton St) a bit of pavement around and across High Holborn (legal) then Bury Place to the BM and Montague St. I take it you are alright from there. If you want to do it with someone you could come on the Bike Train one Weds and we could take you on to the BM. PM me for further info/alternative arrangements -

those concerned about speed might be interested in this: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/safety-and-security/road-safety/community-roadwatch it operates in Southwark. volunteers supervised by police operate handheld speed cameras and people breaking the speed limit get letters reminding them about it. Second time they get a penalty. -
I think coach companies operating PSVs (public service vehicles) have to be registered with the Traffic Commissioner. this page https://www.gov.uk/bus-registration-search goes to a search engine which will search for the bus operator. The registration number of the coach might be sufficient to find them -- I can't tell. There are regulations governing coach companies and where they keep their coaches -- they can't just leave them lying around in residential streets -- that saves them money which undercuts their competitors who run their operations properly. After parking enforcement the Traffic Commissioner might be the next port of call

A Bike Train is a led-ride. I'll be posting our next one in the What's On section on Monday. It's on August 31st and sets off from Nunhead, Peckham Rye station and Denmark Hill station between 8am and 8.10am. It's a very quiet and enjoyable route mostly off-road (through parks) and then a backstreet. After that we are on segregation which is where there is a part of the road for bikes only, protected by about 2m of pavement. We get to Blackfriars at 8.45 and take riders on to various places. People sometimes say to me that they want to go earlier or later -- or to go somewhere else. I'm trying to guage how many people feel like that so that we can adjust to what people want.
-
I know that lots of people don't want a Bike Train, they want their trains back. But if anyone does think they might want a bike train (route: 50% park 40% segregation) -- could you tell me a) what time you would like it to leave East Dulwich? and b) where you would it to go?

sorry to resurrect an old thread but I've come across further info: There's a mechanic here from 8.30am-6pm every weekday. The parking is open 5am to midnight. When I said that the parking might not be safe when the repairs bit was shut, the mechanic pointed me towards 5 CCTV cameras which he assured me were switched on and gave good pictures. The police came round regularly too, he said. When I was there (about 9am) there was still parking space in the Hub though there might be less outside the holidays

East Dulwich Grove crossing - dangerous drivers!
Sally Eva replied to Lolamaxx's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
When impeded some traffic does go elsewhere but some traffic (ie some journeys)simply disappear. This is known as traffic evaporation and is easier to see in practice by considering new roads such as the M25. This increase in capacity made possible lots of new journeys. People could now make those new journeys and they made them. The result was more traffic than expected and a road which was congested from the moment it opened. Capacity creates traffic. The same thing happens in reverse (less pleasantly and more obviously) -- if a junction is made slower some people will wait in the queue, some people will drive around trying to find another way through -- and others will not make that journey by car. -
thanks Dirac, that's really nice to hear. I hope the Bike Train is fun. Fun and free A big chunk of it is off-road and another big chunk is on the segregated cycle lanes from the Elephant and Castle that you can see from the 63 bus. There is a bit of road-sharing with motors but I'm old and I scare easily so not too much of that. The map is here: if you feel you'd like to give it a go, you can PM on the forum, text me on 07842 640 207 or just turn up.

The Bike Hub in general (parking and maintenance) or the Brompton Hire lockers?

So many people have shown an interest in this thread that I feel I must add info about Brompton Bike Hire -- the link is here: https://www.bromptonbikehire.com And you can borrow a bike for a day from Evans Cycles (nearest branch East Dulwich Lane)-- you need to leave your credit card and passport (or similar). Free. http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/hire-a-bike-for-a-day-for-free/ Borrow a bike and ride it on the Bike Train: http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/bike-train-to-central-london-5/

Hi, it's first come, first served on the parking. It opens early. The parking is overlooked during the day because there is a mechanic there but you still need to lock it up properly (obviously). There are more bike stands behind McDonalds that always have space every time I look and more in the various approach roads. I spend time there from 8am occasionally, leafleting for the Bike Train, and there's always bike parking space. You can hire Bromptons at the Bike Hub. I don't know how it's done exactly sorry but I do know it costs ?2.50 a day and the bikes are in lockers in the Bike Hub.

southwark parking enforcement or a site called Fix My Street. I have found the parking enforcement very quick for parking on the pavement etc and Fix My Street very good for obstructions on the highway/potholes etc.

Take the letter and your rent statement to the CAB and ask them to help you find out what it means. You have taken your weekly rent into account, haven't you?

Hi Sue, are you in touch with Cycle Confident? The council funds them and they are very good. Once you are steady on your wheels Southwark cyclists do Saturday am social rides on quiet back streets and parks. We post them all in the What's On section. This saturday they are taking part in the national butterfly count and going from park to park counting butterflies. What could be nicer. When you start to feel up to it, get in touch or just turn up to one of our rides and enjoy them with us. The butterfly ride is here: http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/butterfly-count-peckham-healthy-ride/ ignore the picture -- I don't approve of thinking of cycling as medicinal.
