  1. I'm doing the morning shift, Rosie's on afternoons and northlondoner is doing the evenings.
  2. Yes Ridgely I do agree that we should have a campaign to boost tourism. I think it goes hand in hand with creating much needed employment esp in rural areas. The landscape and coastline around Britain is so beautiful, its one of our strengths. Unfortunately, the recent riots deterred a lot of people from visiting, and its an image of Britain that was in stark contrast to that portrayed by the Royal wedding a few months earlier. Mind you, this isn't exactly a good advert*....:-S [pre] http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2040260/Maciej-Dakowicz-Cardiff-After-Dark-binge-drinking-images-turned-Britain-laughing-stock.html [/pre] (*I don't read the Mail, honest guv, someone emailed it to me in relation to something else but it made me think of this thread, sadly)

  4. Unless its garishly advertising the nearest W------- or the Guardian, then I'm firmly against it ;p (And I love the faded, shabby charm that is Lordship Lane as it is. Haven't noticed it becoming any more commercialised recently unless I'm missing something.)
  5. Oops just read the thread title :-$
  6. My life won't be complete until I have.....a huge castle made out of jelly in the style of Bombas and Parr. *inserts picture of real life size jelly castle complete with moat*
  7. Agree with ridgley. Huge difference between using animals for medical research and for cosmetics. The Medical Rersearch Council has a lot of info about ethics and breeding primates for research, use of rodents and fish etc. On cruelty-free cosmetics, there used to be a company called Beauty without cruelty that made lovely skincare products. Can't speak for the cosmetics though. Trouble is they kept on changing the product and it ended up so different from the original it wasn't as good. Hardly any stockists either. I used to love the Body Shop's shampoos. But went in there recently and came out with nothing. It has changed beyond recognition. The packaging used to be simple and lovely. Now its all fussy and products unrecognisable. Edited to add: I have been thinking about natural and home-made skincare recently. Started reading all these 'recipes' online and scaring myself about all the chemicals (parabens) in skincare. So I sat watching Dr Who on Saturday eve with a home made concoction of mashed avocado and honey slathered all over my face. Not sure what was scarier, me or the monsters. Anyway, happy to say it made my skin feel lovely and soft but the bathroom sink took some cleaning afterwards :)
  8. They built a wall to keep us out :( The colour thief sounds like a load of old cobblers to me. I'm with you Dulwich Fox. What a farce.

Looks like there's some worthwhile reading there and from credible sources (on the edf!! Who'd have thought it...) Hopefully evidence on the massive costs of electricity generation compared to other renewable sources. For what its worth, I am not vehemently anti-wind power, I do believe in a good mix of energy technologies including renewable technologies. This is not simply for reasons of sustainability or the environment but to address the problem of secure energy supplies. I think diversity of sources is important although not for increased costs to consumers via their energy bills. I too have ended up in a bit more debate than intended and nearly missed a meeting, priorities or what :)

That's the trouble Mockney. No need to do any thorough research but plenty of Mythbusters out there on the intranbet for whatever you want to believe. Fair enough if allf that sounds more plausible to you though it really doesn't to me.

That's the million dollar question, DJKQ. We have all this knowledge at our fingertips about other energy sources yet we still have reliance on those pesky fossil fuels. If only someone could single-handedly take over and turn around our failing energy strategy in this country and we'd be laughing. But where to find such a person?!! Mind you, the powers of the EDF never cease to amaze me. There *may* be such an expert out there. PS I thought you'd be against solar what with all these (already rich) people making money from the incentives they receive to plaster it all over their huuuuuuge houses. They don't even pay for the stuff they use AND get money back for generating it too...

Heheh loz, I had to smile when I read about your appreciation of the beauty of wind turbines esp from the vantage poiint of flying above them :) That said, I don't mind how they look at all, nor do I mind the sound. But as MM has beat me to it, they aren't on 24/7, for a considerable amount of time and need back up from other (hydrocarbon fuelled) sources too. There's also the staggering amount of subsidies (sp?) being dished ouit like smarties for something that produces not a huge amount of power to meet our demands. Nuclear amd tidal are far more able to produce that. But what do I know, I'm not an engineer. Energy efficiency people. Put on a fucking jumper when you're feeling cold for a start. Stop buying so much stuff. Re-use and recycle what you've got. Edited to add: meant to say, I think most of the (informed) opposition to them, whether offshore or more controversially onshore, is not about how they look/affect the landscape and wildlife population but that they simply aren't efficiienct enough.
  14. And how was the volleyball Nette? ;-)

And how does your lovely missus find the soup?
  16. As a cyclist, I have the view that the most steps I can personally take to reduce the risk of an accident is in MY interest for the simple reason that I will be the one most likely to suffer greater injury. So its all very well for me to say "I wanna wear headphones, those car drivers are more far distracted than me blah blah". Wearing headphones whilst cycling, in my view, greatly inhibits my awareness of what's going on around me. No matter if other road users are either a) driving perfectly or b) driving like maniacs. If there's an accident, for whatever reason, I will come off worst. I can understand why some road users despair of cyclists, and I can sympathise after reading some of the posts on here. Harry, you wonder why we don't smile and wave to other cyclists in London? :))

Pretty please with sugar on top? Anyone? Edited to add: heheh strafer! Hurrah, thank you for making it 'sticky' at last.
  18. I think I need *Bob* to patiently explain this one in his own inimitable style.
  19. PS HELLO THERE HARRY! *waves and smiles*

  21. Er....I think you'd have to be a reaaaaallllly stupid cyclist to wear headphones when you've got a far greater chance of injury if you're involved in an accident than any car driver listening to their stereo. Unless, of course, your name is Wolverine and your bones are made of adamantine.
  22. Anyone else enjoy spam (with cheese) this evening instead? W**F :))

So I reckon the > pair of you did pretty well. What a refreshingly honest post LM. Let's face it, any one of us could post on here saying we'd got all (or nearly all) the answers right. But my advice is don't give up if you get stuck at the first question. This is what I was taught to do in exams, don't spend too long on a question if you don't know it, marks against time and all that. You never know there may have been a question further down that you could have easily answered and that may have helped you to answer the rest (tu)

Argh! Tried it from my blacberry but when I clicked 'finish' nothing happened. The code bit was the hardest for me and I'm sure I got those two wrong (at least). What did you fail on Huguenot? I couldn't pass my exams again if I were to sit them now. Pretty sure my brain has gone to mush. Btw, there are grammar schools in Scotland still although probably not in the sense they mean in the article.
