  1. I'm not sure that I've tried Coley. Can anyone describe the taste and texture?
  2. Snorky, are you available at 07:03 on Monday? Seems your services are required.
  3. These days you renew your car tax on-line and get sent a reminder from the DVLA before it expires. How can you forget?
  4. Agree with some of the points you make Fuschia. When I was a teenage schoolboy in NW London during the 70's, like *Bob*, we carried knives. Partly because "we woz 'ard" and partly because chicken or splits were popular ways of passing the boredom. I never used a knife in anger, but did accidentally stab a friend in the chest with a Bowie knife! I got involved in some low level petty crime, worthy of an ASBO today, much like the rest of my peers but nothing too serious. I recollect that gangs, stabbings, beatings and rapes were fairly common and gun crime though not unheard did seem to mostly happen amongst villains in South and East London! The seriousness of teenage crime seems to be worse today than when I grew up. Is it because of more guns on the street, more broken families or a cultural acceptance of violence and crime in music (not just rap) and movies? I don't know. I do know that most of the teenagers that get shot tend to be black and tend to be involved in gangs, drugs and serious crime. Now I have a teenage son who, although brought up very differently to me (in a good way), regularly gets caught up in conflicts on the street, in the park, on a train/bus, at parties etc. He knows how to look after himself (doesn't carry a knife) and isn't the type to go out looking for trouble. When he was 15 he was mugged for his bike, phone, money, ipod etc on different occasions. Nowadays the problems seem to revolve around girls and territory. He's not a member of any gangs, except by default because of where he lives. I worry about his safety, but I can't tell him to stay at home. All I can do is teach him common sense and hope that he'll work the rest out for himself.
  5. This was discussed on R4 today. Cafe Nero are not alone in setting up shop before applying for a change of use from retail. Starbucks and others are equally guilty since the industry seems to have adopted this strategy as standard practice. It would appear that planning committees are powerless to stop the invasion of high street Coffee "Shops" which always win on appeal anyway. Part of the problem is lack of clarity regarding the regs which the government have so far not responded to. Cafe Nero et al see themselves as retail shops not restaurants and therefore feel justified to take over a bookshop and replace it with coffee and muffins. I guess if it's organic and fair trade, then why not! *edited for spelling*
  6. I'm not anti gambling per se, but I am biased against the proliferation of gambling opportunities (both on and off-line) simply because my childhood (and my siblings) was wrecked by a father with a serious gambling addiction. Everytime I look inside a betting office it seems to be mostly full of the very people who can ill afford to gamble (bit like a Wetherspoons at 10.30 am). How many of those seriously see it as a hobby? How many of them are vulnerable to the false dream of getting rich quick? At casino's I see so many that are glued to a machine or a table night after night. Tell me that's not a problem. Now casino's are actively upgrading the restaurants and entertainment area to make them non gambler friendly. In other words to suck in more punters for the impulse gamble. All of this is fine if the safeguards are there to protect the vulnerable and their families. I'm not convinced this is the case. I should just state that I do occasionally gamble on the horses, at a casino, the dogs, poker and backgammon.
  7. I think my earliest recollection was wanting to be a cartoonist. At Grammar School, I found I really enjoyed and excelled at design and physics and upon leaving school embarked on an apprenticeship in Design Engineering. Somehow I ended up running Advertising Agency's. I'm now a poor struggling Photographer!
  8. They could ship in Pizza's from over the road in exchange for a few bottles of Lambrusco?
  9. Out of interest where do you plan to go? Is it just the crime you're taking flight from? Is the grass really greener, have you checked it out?
  10. Radio Fonson? What frequency is that?
  11. They've been carting this headline around for at least the last 5 years. It seems more people moving to areas like Cornwall and Devon added to people being priced out of central London = White flight. Just another twist on the hysterical immigration banter.
  12. Cole Porters, Love has come around sung by Billie Holiday - Donald Byrd and the 125th St NYC You Send Me, Sam Cooke - Roy Ayres The Message, Cymande - Aswad Adagio for strings, Samuel Barber - William Orbit (Ferry Corsten Remix) What you won't do for love, Bobby Caldwell - Goldie Nights over Egypt, Jeane Carne - Incognito I think these would have to be double A's

  15. Oh Bloody 'Ell Had to put something in. Previous sentence wasn't in English and one can't delete post entirely.
  16. You could always subtly break wind and then stare at Prince Philip accusingly. And then they would buy you several pints.
  17. Unfortunately it's rare to find good managers that can lead, teach, manage AND do budgets. I've seen people who are excellent at their job and then promoted into a management role and commit career suicide because they didn't have the skills needed to manage effectively.
  18. Maybe the issue is the quality of the head teacher.
  19. I used to know a waiter called Fontaine.
  20. That's because it's not in Camberwell, Peckam or East Dulwich but then again maybe it is. Hoopers address oops mockney beat me to it!
  21. I've not broken any of mine but I did break someone's arm and another's hand. Both accidents I hasten to add.
  22. JesusCappuccino why does it matter what we think? Surely it's down to how you value such recognition and whether it's something you personally want or not? I have no idea what you do, but if it's worthwhile and presumably not coming to an end, then an award like this, as you say, can open more doors and help you continue achieving and helping others. Are there other youngsters in the pipeline that could be helped if you had those three letters after your name?
  23. d_c that project map looks very interesting. Do you think it is truly feasible within the next 50 years (my estimated time left on this planet)? How much will it cost? Assuming the Olympics wont give much change out of ?20bn then I would expect this to cost around ?200bn. Where will the funding come from? Even if half of it was privately financed I'd prefer that the investment was made in our public transport infrastructure, not relocating Heathrow. This might also clash with the proposed London Array wind farm, not to mention a severe depression in the West London economy that depends on Heathrow and disruption to the businesses that have relocated out of London along the A4/M4. If it's a given that air travel will not diminish, then more pressure needs to be put squarely onto the operators and manufacturers to work towards tougher targets to reduce emmissions and noise not how to further drain public resources.
