  1. Yes but I think Nero layed the way.
  2. Was that a double yolk?
  3. I'm not a big regular but I enjoy G&B. The little imperfections add to its charm and is far outweighed by the good quality of their fare.
  4. Chips with that?
  5. I'll give you free range to decide.
  6. c_p for a catering op like this it really is quite mechanical. There is little or no improvisation as you would get in a true Gastro. Prep starts on the Saturday. A lot of the food is then cooked fairly early on Sunday so that meals can be rolled out when the Sunday rush starts. It isn't quite as easy as you think to just peel a few carrots and steam some brockley especially as the preppys have either left by this time or are busy clearing down the kitchen. By 16.00 its approaching end of a shift. Probably not what you want to hear but The Plough isn't a Gastro Pub and most of the ingredients are managed centrally. The Chef/Manager just buys off the approved list. Having said that I do think they are good for what they do and I think that's probably all credit to the management who seem to be trying hard.
  7. I know. Left a bad smell too.
  8. . . . and the change the name to William Sainsburys . . . mmm
  9. Them good old boys were drinkin? whiskey and rye Singin?, "this?ll be the day that I die."
  10. A favourite from my Jazz Funk Days *got there in the end-thanks MP
  11. I think the EDWH is a great idea. If, however, it opened on my road, which is 100% residential (apart from those working from home) I'd be well peeved if residents hadn't been properly consulted first. Hypothetically, if I lived on Zenoria St I'd still feel the same way if I hadn't had proper prior consultation. BUT I wouldn't be THAT surprised given the proximity to LL and the fact that there are two large retail ops on the corner plus a Warehouse. You'd kind of expect a bit of a problem there when considering to buy or rent, wouldn't you? As an aside, I'm sure they already get regular traffic from after hours EDT'ers looking for somewhere to shed excess alcohol!
  12. Just a bit of egg on my face
  13. Sorry I couldn't resist the Yolk! But it is true up until the UCH bit (and I didn't lose my job either)!>:D
  14. No, but I was bundled into a cell and beaten!
  15. One evening, several years ago, during a very drunken game of Treasure Hunt in Soho I threw an egg, jokingly at my boss. It was an excellent shot, right between the eyes, but with such force that the eggshell cut his forehead quiter badly. So bad in fact that he was taken to nearby UCH and had 5 stitches. I was arrested and charged with assault and got a 3 month suspended sentence and 48 hours community service! I can't even look at an Easter egg now!
  16. Heaven must be missing an Angel
  17. Last Turkey in the shop anybody?
  18. Is there going to be a Sushi stall? Would be a nice little tester before rolling out on LL for real. Snorky?
  19. shout now. jump up and shout now, everybody shout now, everybody shout now
  20. Quite right ed_pete, diversity certainly is much wider than race. I think the thread got slightly "coloured" by G Lux's post. The point is that the demographic ebb and flow of the ED populace has never stood still and thankfully never will otherwise I'd be living and working from the basement of some Victorian Doctor's house. I'm sure if Maurice got his way and Camberwell became more gentrified then some would complain about the loss of the areas colourful tramps and nutters.
  21. Growing up in Westbourne Park, most of the residents were Afro Caribbean. As the area became more gentrified a lot (not all) took advantage of a) The right to buy their council properties at a substantial discount and b) The right to sell, to (what many perceived at the time to be YUPPIES) and make a nice killing and then move further out of London with the tidy profits. Some had already planned to retire "back home" and this simply made it cushier. Others rented out their nicely located properties and also moved further out of town. BUT lots of White families also did the same thing. The area still remains largely Afro Caribbean and NOBODY has been displaced by gentrification except perhaps the guys dealing on All Saints Rd. This use of the phrase "ethnic cleansing" to discuss shifting demographics sends shivers down my spine. I'm from a multi ethnic background and I've dealt with my fair share of ignorant rascist abuse but I've also been picked out on the basis of being "too working class" or "not working class enough" etc. ED is not seeing a massive surge of "Black Flight" and the area remains very diverse. Has nobody noticed the Mosque on Northcross Rd and the Halal butchers next door? I think there's also a Hindu temple off LL. Please, if we're going to have a discussion about diversity in the area, have a sense of proportion about it instead of coming up with phrases lifted straight of the pages of the Mirror and co.
  22. I'm not a fan of the Sex Pistols/Punk, but after reading that excellent piece Brendan, I could almost taste the thick green gooey spittle slowly running down my cheek.
  23. Wasn't that the 747 windscreen tensile strength test?
  24. A frozen one!
  25. Thanks I will track down a copy. Found some interesting stuff on the web too including this. 8,000 bodies and much live ammunition still lie there today! I've never been to the Somme , think I might have to visit sometime.
