  1. Sillysue, I actually find the remarks in both your posts quite offensive, especially as I wrote in an earlier one, that I do like to visit Wetherspoons. I also have an SE15 postcode, so it is good to know what 'kind' of a person you think I am, even though we have never met. People with attitudes like yours make me sick. Maybe you should go drinking with Jah Lush & ???? as I think you will have loads in common.
  2. The debut album from 'Hurts' was released on Monday. They are a brilliant duo, kind of electro pop/indie with an eighties feel. They are definitely going to be huge! The album is called 'Happiness' & I recommend that you give it a listen. My favourite album of the year.

  4. If they are going about their business & not actually doing any harm, or hurting anyone, Why not just leave them alone?
  5. All you people who run down wetherspoons can obviously afford to go to a better quality pub, with better quality food/drink etc. Good for you! I wish we could all be in your position! Spare a thought for the less well-off who still deserve a night out. Pensioners, single parents, people who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. Without chains like wetherspoons, they would never be able to afford a drink, let alone a meal out, and one of these so-called 'rubbish' meals to you, is a special treat for them. If I am ever fortunate enough to eat out, I never go anywhere BUT wetherspoons, simply because I can't afford it.
  6. I've been to lots of 'Lloyds no 1' bars as well, locally Croydon & Bromley. Either way, can't wait. It will probably be my local!
  7. I agree with DJQK on this. I have been to fox on the hill loads of times. Good atmosphere, nice friendly place, good food, especially their sunday roasts & before noon breakfasts. Not everybody in ED is well off, myself included, so I would love to see a Wetherspoons here, complete with their special offers & meal deals (plus, they cater for vegetarians!)

If I was to support my case surrounding the issues in my most recent post for example, it would take up the whole forum! Exactly the reason why I quoted from a website, so that readers can see it for themselves. I suggest you go to www.viva.org.uk, type foie gras into the 'search' section, and you may learn something.
  9. I am not ignoring the posts or not responding to the messages, I simply do not spend all day on this site & do not have time to log in 24/7. The reason for my original post is that I saw another thread about squirrel meat and wanted to make people aware of my opinion by asking them to view a website (viva.org.uk), so that they could also form their own opinions. By making people aware of certain things, it may make them think twice before doing certain things eg. ordering squirrel from a menu. I thought this forum was to give opinions, have freedom of speech in what you believe & try to get your point across, which is harder for people like me, who are a minority. I believe in all types of animal welfare (not just squirrels).I mentioned foie gras because it is another thing that I feel particularly strongly about. The suffering & pain of the ducks is unbelievable. People who eat/sell it are just encouraging the torture by doing so. Many are probably not even aware of how it is made & if they are educated, hopefully will feel the same as me. Hence my posts on here. September 18th is a national day of action for foxes, when I will almost certainly be on here again, urging people to contact their MP's, asking them to back the hunting ban. As for putting this in the wrong section, I didn't use the drawing room because I did not come on here for a debate, & yes, my debating skills are not as good as some regular posters on here. I came on here to try & speak up for the animals & neither me nor them deserve some of the flippant, unkind comments that have been made. Cruelty to animals is not a joke.

  11. At last, a fellow vegetarian on this forum!
  12. P.S. Don't even get me started on foie-gras!!!

I am not trying to 'scaremonger' anybody, just trying to make people aware of facts that they may not already know. I saw the thread about squirrel meat and am giving my own opinion, based on info received from the 'viva' website. One of the companies they mention are Budgens, who are apparently selling it in one of their supermarkets in north london. Yes, I am vegetarian, and don't agree with killing anything. I also know that a lot of people don't actually realise, or stop and think about how some animals are killed. I think if more people were educated in this, there would be more vegetarians, more respect for animals and less animal cruelty.
  14. I noticed a recent thread regarding squirrel meat being sold in ED. Certain companies have been accused of cashing in on wildlife massacre by selling squirrel meat. The needless cull by 'so called' conservation groups to boost population of red squirrels is irrational, inhumane & destined to fail, so it is very sad that companies are allowing profit to be made from wildlife massacre. Viva! say that across the UK, the animals are being killed using barbaric, but legal methods, including being clubbed to death & poisoned with warfarin, which causes them to bleed to death over several days (which is why I'm against killing rats by the same method.) If these companies continue to sell squirrel meat, the only message they are giving out, is that they are happy to have the blood of a beautiful wild animal on their hands, for the sake of a few quid. Something to think about when visiting a restaurant/eating establishment. For more info, visit www.viva.org.uk
  15. They don't make chocolate like they used to. Does anyone remember cabana, aztec or amazin' raisin bars? (around 30 years ago) And whatever happened to caramac?
  16. I would just like to clarify my situation, due to the misunderstandings & mixed reactions to my original post. First of all, I am not a clever troll,(HAL 9000), but a genuine regular poster on this forum. If you click on my name, you will see my previous contributions. Secondly, I never said that the incident occurred in the park. I simply said that I lived the other side of peckham rye park because I did not want small dog owners in ED worrying un-necessarily. I stopped walking my dogs in the park ages ago, for fear of this kind of thing occuring. I then began walking them in nunhead cemetery but gave up after meeting too many large out of control dogs. The only option left is to walk them on the pavements, where at least most dogs are on a lead. We were doing this on saturday, walking down a quiet residential road off ivydale rd. My dogs were on leads & under control. The staff charged out of an open garden gate & grabbed my dog. It happened so quickly that neither me or the dogs had time to react. It was totally unprovoked. My little dogs love other dogs & have never had any reason to show any aggression towards one. It was not a dog 'fight'. It was an attack, pure & simple. I have taken the advice of the many caring, sympathetic people on here & contacted my local safe neighbourhood team. Thanks for helping. As for the rest......no comment.

Maybe you should learn some tolerance. They have just as much right to live here as you or me so what gives you the right to decide who, or what needs to be disposed of?
  18. Thankyou to all the people who have given their advice & left supportive messages on here. Thankfully, my little dog does not seem to have suffered any ill effects from the attack. I've no idea how he will behave towards other dogs, because we've not met any since, but I imagine he will be quite apprehensive, if one comes too close. Time will tell. I know that I should have reported it straight away, & am still considering informing the safer neighbourhood team, but as I've already said, I'm nervous about getting on the wrong side of these kind of aggressive people. I live alone with my daughter so obviously feel more vulnerable than others might, in the same situation. As for the flippant comments re: ' an elderley toothless staffie', you should realize that while the attack was going on, we had no idea that the dog was not inflicting life-threatening injuries on our dog. Toothless or not, it had such a firm grip on his head/neck, & had no intention of letting go. You hear of small dogs being killed in this way & both my daughter & I, thought that this was happening before our eyes & there was nothing we could do. It was a very frightening experience & obviously the authors of the uncaring posts are not dog lovers/owners so will never understand how we felt.

  20. Our first thought was to report it to the police, but because of the aggressive response of the owner, I decided against it because of repercussions. I regularly walk my dogs in this area & because I have 3 identical ones (brothers), it would not be difficult to find out where we lived, if he asked around. Basically, I am too scared to report it, due to the way he behaved towards us. Like I said, the owner informed me that the dog had no teeth & told me if it had, my dog would have been seriously hurt. It was still a very frightening experience because I thought that my dog was being choked to death & there was nothing I could do. Whether it had teeth or not, it was still trying to kill my dog. He is only a small yorkie cross. We live the other side of peckham rye park.
  21. My teenage daughter and I were out walking our 3 small dogs this afternoon. Suddenly, a staffordshire bull terrier, charged through an open gate & grabbed one of my dogs around the neck & head. My daughter just screamed in panic. I didn't know what to do, but tried to open the dogs mouth to make it release my dog. It's jaws were locked like a vice & it had no intention of letting go. A child appeared from the garden & tried to pull the dog off, but could not do so. Then, a neighbour came out & I think he kicked the dog so that it let go. My dog was shaken, but ok. A few minutes later, the dogs owner appeared after hearing all the commotion. My daughter shouted at him, that he should not allow a vicious dog to be running loose. He replied that his dog was old & had no teeth (which was the only reason that my dog survived the attack) He then verbally abused us, telling us not to walk our dogs near there again or he would 'slap us in the face & kick our dogs. He called my daughter a c*** and told us to f*** off. Unbelievable really, considering it was his dog attacking ours, totally unprovoked. It is getting to the stage now where I am wondering if it is safe to walk small toy dogs anywhere. My dog could easily have been killed & we are afraid to venture down that same road again. Any advice please?
  22. I love foxes! But then, I love all animals, including pigeons, green parakeets, mice & rats, which many people on here seem to have a problem with. They are not vermin, but living creatures, who have a right to live here, the same as anybody else. So please stop talking about culling/killing, and leave them all in peace!

I could tell straight away that it wasn't filmed recently, because there were no roadworks in Rye Lane. It looked like a street, rather than a building site!
  24. I don't know why everybody seems to be so obsessed with 'killing' them. They are living creatures, same as pigeons that people also seem to have a problem with. You can actually buy humane traps in most DIY shops (including one on forest hill rd.) These are little boxes that trap the mice, so that you can take them to the nearest park & release them. Far kinder than letting them bleed slowly to death after feeding them warfarin & other such poisons - totally cruel. ------------------------------------------------------- > Can anyone recommend a way -other than getting a > cat - to get rid of mice in the house, please.
