  1. Thank you Renata. That makes sense......most of the offending vehicles I've seen have been travelling east to west and wanting to turn right. Some though, did so to then turn left in front of the car at the head of the lights - very dangerous. It might be worth having a word with the bus companies too as many of the offenders are buses. But also, it surely would be possible to put a camera car out there at peak hour?
  2. Renata, on Sunday, I saw six vehicles including a bus again driving down the wrong side to get through lights and overtake traffic (jammed even though the lights were green). Trent69 could have been killed this morning. Is that what it's going to take to address this problem of dangerous drivers? Do something about it. Enough people have reported on this thread that this is going on.
  3. Hi Rosie, the hard drive can be removed and plugged into another laptop and read like an external drive (I have the cables to do that). Then you can see if there's any files you want to keep before wiping the drive. It would also be worth running a virus scan on it too. If you problem is an OS corruption from a virus, that can sometimes find it and repair the OS (meaning your old laptop would boot up as normal).
  4. Neat little piece of software....thanks for the link RC.
  5. And do people still give keys? (not that I got one of those)
  6. LOL KK....I have no issue with a one off party.....just the idea that the person throwing the party has an automatic right to do so......
  7. Don't think I could get rid of all my vinyl. Some things definitely sound nicer played from it. I did though get rid of the cassettes years ago. Those that I wanted but couldn't replace on CD I transferred, but to get rid of hum and other stuff had to design a filter in my audio mixing software. Ripping vinyl has pretty much the same problems and I've never found any of the preset filters offered in non professional software up to the job to be honest.
  8. Spot on Dave. Beyond that, those qualified to assess the mental health of this man would decide if he poses enough of a danger to himself or to others to require sectioning. If it is the same man and he has been released then clesrly the medical opinion thinks otherwise. There are many conditions where people behave in a way that could frighten others. We've lived in a world where we locked up all sufferers of mental health conditions and it didn't work and at best was cruel. Now we have care in the community and for the most part, that works better. Whilst tragic cases like the one described above, happen from time to time, the vast majority of msnslaughter/ murder and violent assault is perpetrated by people under no mental health treatment. And whilst that doesn't make the rare times that things go wrong ok, it also doesn't justify locking up people because they of what they might do.
  9. Maybe party girl would like to familiarise herself with the 'noise act' before dictating what is reasonable to anyone.... ;) 'Under the Noise Act 1996, local councils must take reasonable steps to investigate complaints of noise between 11pm and 7am. Council officers can enter premises where there is noise beyond the prescribed levels and remove any equipment responsible for the noise. Some councils have out-of-hours noise patrols who can investigate alleged night-time noise nuisances in person. The Noise Act has been amended by the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 (CNEA). Under the CNEA, local authorities can investigate complaints from residents about excessive night noise coming from licensed or residential permits. The Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 also grants powers to local authorities in England and Wales to investigate night noises whether or not they have adopted the provisions of the Noise Act 1996.' I think it's safe to say that if you want to hold the occasional party that clearly breaches environmental law then it's best to not antagonise those you need to be reasonable and flexible.
  10. I only ever use WAV. MP3 compression is so far away from the original quality that even the least knowledgeable audiophile will notice the difference when plugged into decent speakers. When you pay the tenner for an original CD you are paying for studio quality sound. To then rip that to such a poor format as MP3 and then get rid of the original CD is putting that tenner down the drain. So I agree with RC....rip to WAV (and keep that). If you need an MP3 copy (for the phone etc) convert and copy from the stored WAV.
  11. Even if the sound from the laptop is a bit rubbish you can fix that by buying an external sound card, like those used by DJ's (I use the Numark DJIO) and connect that to anything you like - such as your hi fi aux or directly to speakers.
  12. To be fair Fox....some components have their own shelf lives (although most I agree should last long beyond the point of upgrade). Over the years I've lost count of all the screens, fans, power units, cards etc that I've replaced. My computers last a long time because I know how to fix them.....not because they have been free from accident, usage or abuse, or even the odd worm or trojan slipping through.
  13. Southwark's Older People Team at [email protected] or on 020 7525 3324 might be able to help. The best way to clear the path is with grit. Clearing snow with a shovel risks leaving an icy sheet.
  14. There is no linkage unless the streets of ED are somehow comparable to a war zone. They are of course not, so to suggest that only someone who has served in the skewed extremes of war zones can have a handle on human nature is nonsense. In fact I'd argue that war zones do the opposite. Instead of giving those in them perpsective, they expose people to world of diproportionate brutality and many never recover completely from the trauma of them. Is Polla arguing that a man behaving oddly in a quiet London street is somehow akin to a maniac in a war zone with and AK47 (for example)? It's not hard to see from that post where all perspective has been lost, and understandably why.
  15. That's all true uncle, but I would also say that just because some will not help themselves or respond when offered help doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Drug and alcohol addiction is always a controversial one, but we have to remember that addiction is not the sole preserve of the poor either. Some things take years to repair in a person. There are no quick fixes for many things, including depression, trauma, and even the impacts of hardship. The state is vastly under resourced in what it can offer by way of treatment, but where intensive and prolonged treatment/ support is in place, the results are worthwhile. For the poor, illness, or addiction etc can quickly trap that person in a downward spiral. If that person is then ostracised by the community around them, then they have no chance of getting well. We should care about those people more than we do.
  16. You don't need to be anywhere near a war zone to understand human nature. Thankfully there are many others with a far better understanding than you.
  17. PaulK. Look up food banks and you'll see all the evidence you need for people who can not afford to eat properly or feed their families.
  18. I too received the email and found it useful. Thank you James. Was able to post some of the details on our Tenants Assocation facebook page for th benefit of residents.
  19. I'd write to head office too. They will probably refund you as a 'goodwill gesture'. But having said all that..the store will have an electronic record of the item being returned on the day it was, at the time it was. The till data, which is downloaded every day (and kept) shows every transaction including refunds - they scan the barcode of an item when it's returned for their stock levels. The manager could chase that up. I'd go back to the store as well and ask them to do that, especailly as it was a debit card transaction, the refund data should link back to that from your receipt.
  20. The police do have a procedure of referral for dealing with people with mental health problems so they are the right people to call in that event. And it can be very scary being confronted in that way by anyone, no-one would disagree with that. My point was more a case of preventing people from becomming homeless in the first place. At present homeless people are housed in hostels, often which are a concentration of people with addictions or mental health problems (but without any on site specialist support for them). They can be very hostile and frightening places to live. Single men with no dependants are the least likely to qualify for social housing as well so there is a corellation between homelessness and the number of single men on waiting lists and living in hostels. And with the coming changes to Housing Benefit (in relation to underoccupancy) and council tax benefit (it's being abolished and local authorities will have to give rebates, but won't be given enough by the current government to maintain at previous levels) there are going to be increasing presures on local authorities. The numbers of families and individuals being made homeless by the changes already applied is rising and that is a trend that is expected to continue. But in all of this, a person can sink very quickly to the bottom. The loss of employment, a family/ relationship breakdown/ bereavement, there are many reasons why people suddenly become ill or homeless. Things can fall apart very quickly. A providing shelter and a meal at Christmas isn't enough.
  21. I'd be very worried about you quids if you still had some Christmas booze left ;)
  22. A box of Milk Tray.....a very large one.........!
  23. I think the rationale was to improve bus timetables, but the stop is used by so few bus routes that it made no sense then any more than it does now. And sadly you are right Renata in that TFL probably won't care.
  24. Which is fair. He sounds as though he has a mental health issue or may even be suffering form some kind of breakdown. But why does it have to come to him running around scaring and threatening people before anyone intervenes to help? Something in our society was already going very wrong for this guy.
  25. Vinyl: The Terry Mansell Singers sing Burt Bacharach (or was it abba?) CD: Can't remember (have so many) Download (a legal one): Ministry of Sound - Pump It Up Quite liking mulumbu's 'Abba Arrival' too
