  1. There's a crucial point being missed here. How many collisions with vehicles and any other users have occured in say the past five years? Whilst yes, it's a multi-use space and the potential dangers are clear....the reality is that the data just doesn't support the necessity for speed humps. Yet again an example of an authority unable to leave people to use their own common sense. Just because a road travels through a park does not devolve pedestrians of repsonsibility and good road sense, any more than drivers shouldn't drive according to the conditions. How I got through my own childhood without a speed hump in sight I'll never know. But then again, I had the Green Cross Code man to drum road safety into my head. We seem to increasingly live in a society where people can no longer be trusted to apply common sense, and dare I say, where middle class pester power skews the perspective of those we elect to decide how the public money paid for with our taxes, is spent.

    .

LOL and just how can a bush block a satellite signal? Do not feed the .........
  3. It's gonna cost ?25 a pop to go to the 'public' viewing floor. Don't think I'll bother either.
  4. Totally agree with you Rosie which is why in my earlier post I asked people to think about what they write and perhaps take the emphasis away from what could be done by women to avoid it happening to them. The woman is the victim here, and whilst I totally accept that men are more likely to be robbed or violently attacked, they are not likely to be raped. The two are different crimes with different consequences.
  5. There's one thing that no-one is coonsidering when writing about defence techniques etc...and that is the fear of the victim. Many people freeze in situations of danger. If the assailant is armed or threatens violence if the victim does not comply, many victims do comply (this is why often no sounds etc are heard during an assualt). We also have to be very sensitive and considerate in regards to what we write here too. We must remember that a young women has been the victim of a serious crime. She will be going through a range of emotions at the moment including 'what if'. Her 'fear' will go on for some time yet too (it's not just confined to the fear experienced during the assaut). The onus of this thread so far has been on what a woman can do to protect herself, rather than what can be done to catch the vile scumbag that committed the offence. Edited to say crossed post with Saila
  6. How do you tell a druggie/drinker from someone who is 'merely' in pain, drugged up to the eyeballs to unsucessfully control the pain of a debilitating condition like arthritis, not sleeping well because of pain or not mobile enough to buy and cook the fresh fruit and veg to give a healthy diet? Did you know arthritis and other illnesses/ conditions can lead to insomnia, depression and poor diet? On the other hand, I've witnessed many professionals blow their disposable income on as many drugs as it will buy every weekend, and but for them being a little tired on a Monday morning, you'd never know. We have to be very careful about making assumptions about people we know very little or nothing about.

    Help !

I now have a huge bag of sweeties to donate. I can cycle to Kings tm morning. What time do they need to be there for? Maybe i should give you a call :)
  8. I have to say that whilst H and I don't always see eye to eye, I respect his contribution to, and interest in debating. You on the other hand Saleem seem to serve no other purpose beyond trolling, i.e starting debates with provocative perspective and seeing who bites.

    Help !

Hi Hilli.....I'd be more than happy to donate some boxes/ tubs of sweets. I'll pick something up at Makro on Friday. When do you need them for.
  10. Doesn't it even out though? Given that hispanics, africans etc and other non-caucasian descendants make up around 12% of the US population it would be correct to assume that blacks and whites are no more likely to be receiving welfare than each other. If anything, socio-economic background, and location/ circustance is likely to have a far greater bearing on unemployment. It just so happens that many migrants find themsleves at the bottom of the ladder, and it makes sense to me for any government to give opportunity to those willing to take it, to work.
  11. Increasing population vs available land for burial has been a recurring issue for most capital cities and I guess the cost of maintaining cemetaries has to be met from somewhere and therefore recycling of use is the way that is done. Seems to me that reducing the number of burials is the way to go.
  12. It could have been worse (hard to imagine I know). The council wanted to build a bypass through the High Street at one point. And more recently Mayor Ken (with Southwark's blessing) wanted to put a tram marshalling depot bang in the heart of it.
  13. No but racism within politics is often labelled as a right wing view. The point I was making is that culture has far more to do with racism than polical allegiance (i.e. the Souhern Democrats formed the Ku Klux Klan because they were southerners more than because they were democrats).
  14. There are no statistics to back this up. Yes the Republican party was founded with the abolition of slavery as one of it's core aims and yes the Southern Democrats were at the heart of the formation of the Ku Klux Klan but that doesn't mean that the democrats today harbour any more racism within their ranks than the Republicans. Pretty much all main parties in the US are right wing. There's no equivalent for example to the Labour Party, not in a historical or modern day form. American politicians are a product of the culture they grow up in just like anyone else. American culture per se is right wing.
  15. I completely agree Mr ben. I think those 60s planners genuinely felt they were solving a problem with a cheap and imaginative solution, but I think most would agree it was an experiment with a high cost that completely failed. Hindsight is always easy though.
  16. I watched this and thought it was excellent. It interweaved the social history very well with the passion of those residents who fought to make Camberwell Grove their own. And as a narrative is a perfect example of socio-economic evolution (which has kind of run full circle). Look forward to watching the rest of the series and hope all the episodes will be equslly as intelligent.
  17. Yes sadly that seems to be the case. I too send my thoughts and prayers to the family.
  18. I saw this when it came out....can't say I'd go down the same route with one of my own cats. Disturbs me a little :S
  19. Not in a good mood today ;)
  20. The only person that needs to grow up is you. Udt and yourself disagree...that's clear. For the record I think you both have made good points but you are the only one looking down at anyone and dismissing everything he says with personal insult. So yes, UDT wins because he doesn't stoop to your levels and you are just the same old Hugenot who thinks he's right on everything and knows better than everyone else. Stick to Wiki...it's about your level.
  21. Errr and can you get your self righteous head around learning to debate without insult and ridiculing autism (a serious condition for those dealing with it). People will disagree in a debate H...you are NOT always right....get over it.
  22. I've passed by this guy several times, crossing the park late at night on a Thursday evening. He's harmless. Just standing and chanting nonsense, but interferring with no-one. Can't see why he can't be just left to it.
  23. Ha the key question here is 'you are losing money online?' and Murdoch's reply 'no!' This is simply an attack on Google by a greedy meglomaniac whose real issue is that there is a media form he doesn't dominate. If anything, this perfectly illustrates UDT's fears regarding pressure from global monopolies to charge for internet content (not that there is anything stopping Murdoch for charging subscription fees to any of his internet sites already anyway).
  24. Again Loz is spot on. Sorry H but your arguements are not standing up to scrutiny and in typical fashion your only response is to insult others and get angry. The only way to stop people sharing files illegally is to go after those that seed and create torrents (just as shop owners need to go after those that actually do the shoplifting). Shutting down the pirate bay will have no impact on that whatsoever. Loz is right. Give google a try.....you can find any torrent you want through google. Should governemnts be ordering ISPs to block google? Sometimes I wish you'd be a bit less stubborn when others present perfectly logical debate. Abd btw, most shop keepers will tell you there is no difference to them between a single shoplifter who steals from them, and a gang of looters in a riot. They see both equally as thieving scum, who think they can take something for nothing, with no consideration for the impact on that persons business. It's totally hypocritical of you to excuse your own teenage criminal behaviour whilst criticising other teenage criminals.
