Mum and Daughter exercise options?
goldilocks replied to nunheadmum's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Junior parkrun is only 2km (but hilly as its in Brockwell!) Parkrun is so friendly and encouraging too so being at the back isn't an issue -
Thanks very much for that Bic Basher. Do you know if there has been any announcement on timing, or was my memory of 2018 just wholly overly optimistic!
-
I seem to remember a while ago there were comments that the London Overground service from Clapham Junction to Dalston would be increased to 6 TPH from the current 4 during 2018. Wondered if anyone had an info on this - or was it just an optimistic dream on my part?

Mum and Daughter exercise options?

what about junior parkrun or even normal parkrun - you could do it together, its friendly and welcoming. Its also free! -
Hi Tara For all the angst you have when choosing a school, its really hard to predict what will happen there in 2,3, 4 years time. Staff move on and things can change. I think that the best you can do is chose a school you are happy with for now. Don't underestimate how much better life will be if school is closer too. We went for our closest school - its approx. 3 mins from our house and I appreciate that whenever I have to go in for meetings, plays etc as well as getting the kids to and from school

Elsewhere on the planning site it says that comments submitted will be displayed with a delay of approx. one day to allow the council time to redact personal info etc so perhaps check later / tomorrow http://www.southwark.gov.uk/planning-and-building-control/planning-applications/comment-on-planning-applications

For the avoidance of doubt I've copied details of the proposal from the covering letter to the application. This is a hostel in the sense of backpacker / group trips, and not intended to house the homeless. There will be large dorm rooms with up to 12 beds in each (assume this is what 'bunks' means in this context and not 'bunk beds' which would give a much larger no of beds) and then communal shower and kitchen areas: Edited to note: From looking at the plans, it appears the proposal is for triple bunk beds too - really think it quashes any idea of them looking for the mon- fri working week market! "It will create 47 bed spaces across 5 bedrooms on the first and second floors. The proposal seeks to retain the Public House building in its entirety, and involves the conversion of the upper floors only and requires no external alterations. The development seeks to provide an up market hostel type accommodation instead of the traditional hotel/B&B. Each room will have a number of individual bunk beds to create dormitories and there will be shared facilities including kitchen areas and showers and WCs. This type of accommodation is popular in many urban areas where visitors may come for shorter periods and is particularly linked to pubs, with numerous examples in and around London. This type of accommodation will appeal to a wide range of visitors who are seeking high end, though affordable accommodation in highly sustainable locations with good public transport links to Central London. The first floor will provide 3 bedrooms comprising of 1 x 9 bunk bed and 2 x 12 bunk beds as well as 6 x shower rooms and 5 x WCs. There will also be a communal kitchen/living room. The second floor provides 2 bedrooms comprising 1 x 8 bunk beds and 1 x 6 bunk beds and also 2 x shower room and 3 x WCs. As like the first floor there will also be a communal kitchen/living room."

Last year we weirdly had no squirrels - one of the neighbours said they'd seen some kind of hawk and maybe that had decimated the squirrel population - could be the same one, although the squirrels are back this year!!

I think that a reasonable 'B&B' option could work well - single rooms, maybe a couple of family rooms might cater well to extended family visits in the area. If the pricing was slightly cheaper than the Bellenden Road or village options that could also work in their favour. However a bunk room with multiple people sleeping in the same room will only really appeal to stag and hen type dos and large group nights out. On the one hand I can see why the Cherry Tree might want a constant stream of punters to be supplied by this option, but its not really a good fit and I'd worry about the noise levels. Separately - I can see that they were thinking that they are near the station and should capitalise on that - but with trains stopping around midnight and no night service on the Peckham Rye branch of the Overground, its hardly a convenient location for central London nights out.

Would echo above. With a 7 yr old and 5 year old you would be looking at in year admissions this year - which would mean that you'd be limited to those schools with spaces so would be worth calling Southwark to see how you find out and then asking for opinions on those specific schools. In terms of others which may be full, you could go on the waiting list for any places coming up and then you'd be subject to the standard admissions criteria whereby when a place comes up the list would be reviewed for the person highest up according to that criteria, which may or may not be you.

Gas vs induction hobs - thoughts?
goldilocks replied to SEnewbie's topic in The Family Room Discussion
No button pressing for us - just slide your finger along the line and it increases (and shows numbers so you can gauge by how much). There are many reasons not to like an induction hob, but not all of them have annoying pressy buttons. (My MILs does though so maybe more common on older ones) -
Gas vs induction hobs - thoughts?
goldilocks replied to SEnewbie's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We have induction - was reluctant to switch from gas, but its amazing. The heat is really really responsive - but it does depend on the hob. We have a Neff one, they are expensive but I think that the cheaper ones might have the problems Saffron noted. Sure which or somewhere must have a comparison though. THe only thing I miss gas for is charring peppers and realistically I probably did that about twice in my life! -
thanks. guess its something I will look at when we get to open days.

One of the things I'm not clear on with Harris (not yet at the open day stage) is of the results how many do A levels and how many do A level equivalent - think I'd heard secondhand that the majority of their results are HND social care type courses which have A level equivalence. Was this covered in their open day material?

Proposed 10km new double yellow lines across Dulwich

Linked to the comments on parking - does anyone know how I'd find out if a dropped kerb was applied for properly and approved by the council please? -
minimal effort party for 5 year old - help!
goldilocks replied to Kes's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'd advise the horror of Gambados to be honest. You'll need a lie down and a glass of wine after, but the kids love it and it really is an 'out of the bag' option. At 5 the crafty type ones can be tricky. We did Captured on the Rye for my 5 year old, but as a lot of his friends were still 4.5 they found cutting out their designs tricky and it was a lot of work for me and my husband (most people dropped off) so not sure I'd recommend with a baby to deal with too. Its a great option for 6/7 though. -
New Shops in Dulwich / Peckham

Went tonight - it is called '200 Rye Lane' and for those of you less au fait with Peckham's history (myself included)its just up from Peddler and Pizza pickup, and pretty much opposite the Nag's head. The guy said they were having a 'soft launch' and adding an extra day each week, today was their first Sunday. The cocktails were lovely, the bar staff really nice. Didn't eat but the bar snack descriptions sounded good. Its definitely light snacks with your cocktails rather than somewhere for a full on dinner at the moment, though they are apparently doing some work to expand the kitchen. Would definitely go back - hopefully when more people have discovered it, it will be a bit warmer, as was a bit chilly, but that was my only criticism. -

Someone has posted one on 'East Dulwich Mums' FB page. I've commented that this thread exists. Apparently the one that they have posted is dumped on Norcroft Gardens on Sat night -
