Trains cancellations - latest
goldilocks replied to DovertheRoad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The problem is that a lot of people use pay as you go and an app for train arrivals. If you see that the train is cancelled you go a different route but then don't have a ticket for the ED - LB route as you haven't swiped in at ED. My understanding of this (unless I'm wrong) is that you wouldn't be eligible for compensation (despite the fact that a bus plus train alternative may cost more. Ideally I'd like to be claiming compensation from Southern every day for the fact that there is virtually no service from ED, but don't think I'm eligible unless someone else can tell me otherwise? -
I have one to sell if you are interested - great condition

9:30, 3 mins late. I accept it's not terrible on its own, but in the context of only running 1 train per hour it's pretty poor. It's quiet too so it's not as a result of loads more people trying to get on at the stops -

Just going back to Charlie Smith and 'we're going to do a survey' I totally agree with earlier posters that the time for surveys has long gone! The time for surveys was when the service declined from a train every 10 minutes down to approx. 4 per hour. Who on earth is going to think that 3/4 trains over the entire morning rush (ie a 3 hour period) is remotely adequate? In addition - it is at odds with Helen Hayes' previous statements on this that GTR should be stripped of their franchise to run this route. Unless some clear action is taken by our elected representatives then this 'emergency timetable' will be implemented next week. The question of how franchises are awarded with seemingly no requirement to sign up to a minimum service level on routes is quite staggering - seemingly as long as you can stick to whatever skeleton timetable you put out there, then there are no financial penalties. It is also clear that the lines through East Dulwich are not profitable for GTR and that our trains are being sacrificed to run more profitable routes. Busses are not a viable alternative for us regardless of what is said - a bus to London bridge can take almost 1 hour, vs the train which used to be 12 minutes! More reason why the route should be passed to TFL - not saying this would be perfect, but its hard to imagine a worse service than now (apart from perhaps just shutting the station). -

I should retract my previous post - I had thought that the national rail site would be updated, but now see that's not the case. Apologies for any false hope, this is ridiculous -

Still a 21 minute gap between trains 8:30 - 8:51. -
Do you have any Family/kids meal ideas to share?
goldilocks replied to Undiscovered's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Lentil daal works well at our house - we add spinach to it (although the kids will only tolerate sainsburys frozen spinach - specifically this, not waitrose, not fresh - think its cos its more finely chopped). -
Came on to recommend the Anna Jones cookbooks - but see I was beaten to it. I prefer 'A modern way to eat' rather than 'cook' but they are both good.

Where to go for a 'cool' haircut for my teenage son?
goldilocks replied to sillywoman's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Other option would be Rose and Crown in Camberwell - just down from Kings on the Main road. Lots of men have haircuts there when I'm in. Love Walk caf? is opposite for coffee whilst you wait. -
Melbourne Grove/Grove Vale junction CLOSED 10-16 May
goldilocks replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Today the diversion seems to have been (partially- ie not all the signs have been moved) moved to Elsie Road. Cant help thinking that diverting onto a side street near an infant / junior school isn't particularly appropriate either. Official diversion via main roads would seem most appropriate -wouldn't stop the use of these side streets but also wouldn't force such a volume of traffic along them that they get blocked up -
Melbourne Grove/Grove Vale junction CLOSED 10-16 May
goldilocks replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Wasn't working too well yesterday when someone had misjudged the gap and scraped all the side panels of their car down the side of a flatbed truck. Derwent Grove really doesn't work as a diversion as you can't generally pass 2 cars along it. Lots of gridlock and people getting out of their cars and swearing at each other after sitting and beeping horns. James - Is there any chance that future diversions could be along main roads rather than sending traffic down a street that is totally inappropriate to accept it? - ie the diversion could have been along East Dulwich Grove, left to the roundabout and then along Grove Vale. I accept this is further, but it is all main roads where 2 cars can pass. A substantial amount of local traffic would use Derwent and Melbourne in any event, but it would reduce the overall amount. -

Offering on a house that needs work - cost fears
goldilocks replied to poppet27's topic in The Lounge
Also - whilst I'm sure its possible to do the house for the quotes noted above - you really need to be realistic about the type of finish you're going to want - eg ?2000 is possible for flooring - but lots of engineered flooring is over ?60 pqm (incidentally if you don't have underfloor heating you may not need engineered boards). Kitchens are also a huge potential spend - 5-10k would be more at the howdens / Ikea end of the market so depends if that's what you would chose? French doors quote is reasonable - but would be more than double if you wanted a wall of bifolds -
If the weather isn't good you could always go to the ceramics caf? on East Dulwich Road (corner of Gowlett) and she could paint something there. Bonus of you being able to sit down and have a cuppa!

Have you ever got your oven cleaned by professionals?

I wonder if A-Z cleaning does this?... -
Best taps and toilet for family bathroom
goldilocks replied to LV0210's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Second duravit recommendation. Avoid bathstore as can be quite prone to faults considering its relatively expensive. Mainly though - in terms of family bathrooms would recommend a soft close toilet seat and mixer taps rather than separate hot and cold, all else is to a great extent personal preference. -
Leap pad - where to get it repaired?
goldilocks replied to Northern Star's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Maybe call up these guys and see if they repair (although not sure how economically viable it would be for you vs a new one) https://www.ismash.com/repair -
Things to do with one year old in Dulwich?
goldilocks replied to TM2014's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Check out ED Tots for listings but be mindful that its Easter hols so some things may not be on. You could probably get to the Horniman and back in time (even with their annoying opening times). Other things to consider are Goose Green if the weather is nice for running around in the playground, there are probably some activities on at the libraries (Grove Vale and Dulwich) and Bessemer childrens centre used to run stuff in the holidays (but no idea if it still does). -
We have virtually all drawers - we only have a couple of cupboards (under the sink and above and below the cooker). Theyre' much easier than trying to find stuff in the back of cupboards. Also have a full height fridge and freezer which is great. If we had the space I actually think that 2 dishwashers would be amazing, but wouldn't work in our kitchen. We don't have a breakfast bar and I don't wish we did - although we do have a kitchen table so it would have felt like doubling up. Also a vote for induction hobs - takes a bit of getting used to and very (very) occasionally I miss gas, but every single time I clean it I remember why its amazing.

Easter Monday lunch (with under 6's)
goldilocks replied to bawdy-nan's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The last couple of times I have eaten at the Florence, the food, service and general ambience has been dire (if you have kids you have to sit in the conservatory bit (or did before the refurb of the playroom - perhaps now you have to sit in the shed), but it was cold, staff kept wandering through with supplies and leaving the door open, its not a very nice space and the food was underwhelming at best. Rocca have always been so welcoming and the food is pretty dependable if Italian is your thing. I also like the Lido caf? but it gets so full booking is a must and service can be sloooooow, but then you're in Brockwell park for a run around! I tend to avoid pubs with play space (too zoo like) and just go somewhere where kids are welcome but where I would expect them to sit and eat. For my 2 we tend to take crayons and paper / sticker books and stories and they sit at the table. They are both under 6, don't think its too much of an ask provided you're not sitting down for hours. -
If it makes it any easier to get your head around, I should note that nursery fees don't get adjusted when nursery is closed (for example over Xmas) - you just have to think that really the actual daily rate is higher and its just equalised over the year! Agree with other posters -its kind of up to the childminder as to how they present it though - so some will specify paid hols and some not and its just part of the weighing up options decision.

Having re read your original post and some of the subsequent ones, the sounds you mention are some of the later ones anyway. Most of those are ones that SALTs wouldn't expect to be clear until around 5/6. R /l and th are all later sounds (and as you say - th in south London - maybe never...). As long as he can make himself understood and isn't frustrated by his speech I'd consider just seeing how he goes. To the extent its letters like c/g/y that are a problem, these should be in place by around 4 - 4.5 apparently so if they're already in place it sounds fine. In terms of exercises the key thing is modelling the speech correctly - so if he says I saw a 'wabbit' - you say. oh yes, a rabbit - etc. Dont' correct, but just keep saying the word correctly and the theory is it will sink in. Also think phonics at school does generally help.

I have an Elle Tens for sale - needs replacement pads but otherwise fine. Collect from ED (sorry for hijack but thought it might be worth noting).

Can you ask nursery to refer him for speech therapy? We had similar with my son and like you had been not worrying until he was around 4. He had specific issues with certain sounds but otherwise his vocab was fantastic (has since been assessed as about 3 years above his actual age so it isn't a comprehension thing). We saw SALT at Townley road for a while which did help. Once he started school he had a term of sessions with their speech therapist and the change has been totally amazing, so maybe there is an age and being ready to do it element too. He pretty much there on all words now - apart from ones that you wouldn't necessarily expect at his age. I pushed it just before school as I was worried that it would be increasingly frustrating for him if he wasn't clearly understood. Happy to PM if you'd like more info though. He also had t tie - SALT didn't think this would be the reason, I have my suspicions though...
